Tony Stark proposes to his girlfriend, Marianne Rodgers, and she accepts.
However, Tony Stark's old school-friend Kevin O'Brien developed feelings for Rodgers. During Stark's birthday party less than a year later, while they were both drunk, O'Brien began a fight with Stark about Rodgers. Stark shoved O'Brien, resulting in him falling into a glass table and being seriously injured. This incident soured Stark's relationship with Rodgers, who broke off their engagement shortly afterwards.
