Tony Stark Character in The Timestone Paradox | World Anvil

Tony Stark

Dr Anthony Edward Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man)

Tony Stark is a founding Avenger, the founder of Avengers Idea Mechanics, and the former CEO of Stark Industries.

He was a member of the Infinity Watch, and was the keeper of the Space Stone.

In 2018, after Thanos succeeded in wiping out half of all life in the Original Timeline, Stephen Strange sent Tony's consciousness back to 2008, to the day before he publically announced that he was Iron Man, so that he could use his knowledge of the events to come to alter history and prevent Thanos's victory, thus creating the current timeline.

He is the creator of the world's first true Artifial Intelligence, the co-discoverer of Sterile Neutrinos, the discoverer of JARVium, and worked out how to adapt his father's Arc Reactor Technology into a viable clean energy source.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

He is extremely fit for a man of his age, but has several old injuries which still cause him problems.

Physical quirks

He previously had a electro-magnet and miniturised Arc Reactor embedded in his chest, holding several pieces of metal shrapnel in place and keeping them from entering his heart.

He has since undergone surgery to remove the shrapnel and magnet, and now has a large sugical scar over his sternum.

Specialized Equipment

He uses various iterations of the Iron Man Armour.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Tony Stark is a time traveller, who has existed in two sepperate timelines. For his life prior to changing the timeline, see Tony Stark's Life (Original Timeline). For all events on Earth-61616 since being sent back through time, see below.

Sexuality

Stark is bisexual. He has been out to his friends since his late teens, but did not come out publically until 2003, when he was forcibly outed by the press after being photographed by paparazi with his then partner, Tan Thim Heng.

Since coming out, he has been a well known supporter of many LGBTQ rights charities, and is one of the world's leading donors to LGBTQ causes.

He has twice been the grandmarshall of the San Francisco Pride Parade, and has been spoken at the New York City Parade, for which Stark Solutions has been a key sponsor for many years.

Education

At seven, Stark was sent to Phillips Academy, a boarding school in upstate New York. He recieved his highschool diploma at 14, and began a four-year undergraduate degree at M.I.T.

He completed his Bachelor's degree in just three years, and chose to remain at M.I.T. for post-graduate program. After recieving his Masters in 1988, he enrolled in doctoral studies. However, he dropped out two years into the program without completing his studies.

He returned to M.I.T. in 1994, and recieved his PhD in mechanical engineering in 1996.

In 2003 he enrolled in University of California, Berkley, and completed a second PhD, this time in physics, graduating in 2006.

In 2008, M.I.T. granted him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his work in the field of applied robotics.

Employment

He was CEO of Stark Industries from 1992 until 2010, when he stepped down in favour of Pepper Potts.

As majority shareholder he remains a member of the Board of Directors.

He is also the founder and Chair of the Board of Avengers Idea Mechanics.

After helping to found the Avengers in the Original Timeline, he remained an active member of the team from 2012 until 2018, when he stepped down from the team following the destruction of the Infinity Stones and the creation of Singularity, though he continues to fund the team and design technology for them.

He is considered to be the inventor of the world's first true Artifial Intelligence, and as a result is often listed as one of the most influential figures in the history of computing.

Failures & Embarrassments

He has been called the Merchant of Death, and 'the greatest killer since Kissinger' for his work in weapons development. During the invasion of Iraq, anti-war protests were arranged outside of Stark Industries facilities, and Stark's private home.

As CEO of Stark Industries, he oversaw weapons sales to several governments with poor human rights records, and in some cases, a history of war crimes, including Israel, China, and Saudi Arabia.

Although many praised his decision to stop producing weapons in 2008, he also recieved widespread criticism for the fact that he was willing to be complicit in the deaths of innocent people right up until it affected him personally.

Although he is an advocate for LGBTQ rights, education, and women's rights, and is known to be a Democrat voter, an expose by the New York Times in 2009 found that under his leadership, Stark Industries donated money to many anti-LGBTQ, mysognistic, and anti-intellectual policians, including those on the right wing fringe of the Republican Party.

Mental Trauma

Stark suffered emotional neglect and abuse as a child from his father.

Shortly before he completed his Bachelors Degree, aged 17, he began a relationship with a 23-year-old post-graduate student, Sunset Bain. After dating for four months, he realised she was using him in order to get close to Stark Industries, with the intention of hacking their systems and stealing corporate secrets.

Due to his young age, he failed to make many friends during college. He began drinking heavily and using drugs to cope with the lonliness and stress of his fast-tracked course, and when his only friend, James Rhodes, graduated and joined the U.S. Airforce, Stark dropped out of college and spent several months taking increasingly hard drugs, culminating in a stint in rehab in 1991.

When he was 21, his parents were assasinated by HYDRA.
In 1995, Stark's girlfriend of two months, Janice Cord, was killed in a car accident. The accident was caused by Cord, who is believed to have been high at the time.

While enrolled in UC Berkley, Stark began a relationship with Kathleen Dare. Not long after the relationship began, Stark discovered that she had been stalking him. When he tried to break off the relationship, she shot him. Although the injury was not fatal, he required several months of physical therapy to recover.

In 2009, he was kidnapped by the Ten Rings. During the kidnapping he witnessed the deaths of many of his miliary convoy, before being near-fatally wounded in an explosion. In order to save his life, Ho Yinsen was forced to perform heart surgery without proper equiptment or painkillers. Stark was then tortured by the Ten Rings in order to force him to build weapons for them.

During his escape, Ho sacrificed himself in order to protect Stark.

On his return to the United States, he discovered his kidnapping and torture had been orchestrated by Obadiah Stane, who he had known since he was a child and who had been Tony's mentor since his father's death. Obadiah tried personally to kill him twice, the first time removing Stark's arc reactor and leaving him to die a slow and painful death from the shrapnel in his chest. The second time, he attacked him using the Iron Monger Armour, and Stark was forced to kill Stane in order to survive.

During the Battle of New York in the Original Timeline, he was forced to fly a nuclear bomb through a portal into deep space, which he believed would kill him. In the current timeline, he was forced to repeat this action, although this time he was aware that he would survive it.

During the Mandarin bombings, in the Original Timeline, his home was destroyed, and he, Pepper Potts, DUM-E, and JARVIS were nearly killed or destroyed.

He and Bruce Banner were responsibly for the creation of Ultron in the original timeline, which lead directly to the cestruction of Novi Grad, for which Stark carries immense guilt.

He was part of a group of heroes who failed to stop Thanos in the original timeline. As a result, he witnessed the deaths of his allies due to the snap, leaving him alone on a death planet without any means of escape.

As a result of these traumatic experiences, he has been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He also struggles with alocoholism.

Intellectual Characteristics

He has been called one of the greatest minds of the 21st Century, and one of the most influential engineers of all time. His interests and expertise are wide ranging, and he as made significant innovations in the fields of computer programming, Artifial Intelligence, mechanical engineering, robotics, and particle physics.

He has been diagnosed with ADHD.

Morality & Philosophy

His philanthropy and his work as a superhero is driven in large part by a need to balance out the harm he did as a weapons manufacturer.

Social

Contacts & Relations

His closest friend is James Rhodes, who he has known since he was a teenager.

He has developed close friendships with several other members of the Avengers, particularly Bruce Banner, Peter Parker, and Clint Barton.

He is also good friends with his former bodyguard Happy Hogan.

Family Ties

He has almost no living relatives - he was an only child, as were both his parents. Prior to his marriage, his next of kin was a second-cousin, Morgan Stark.

In 2018, following the defeat of Thanos, he proposed to his long-time partner, Pepper Potts.

His relationship with JARVIS is complex, but they consider one another family. Vision used the surname Stark before his marriage, and has referred to Stark as his uncle or grandfather at various times.
