The Death Curse

Ralayan activates the Death Curse to feed his Atropal, preventing resurrection from working and causing all those who have been previously resurrected to wither and die.

After months of work, Ralayan has brought the Atropal to the Tomb of the Nine Gods, and with the help of the Sewn Sisters, transforms the the Soulmonger into a negative energy vortex. The effects of this vortex are referred to as "The Death Curse" by the population at large. The massive energy needs to power this spell are driven by one of the chains of Mechanus which have been rerouted into the tomb through a planar vortex.   All across Faerun, any soul that is not tightly protected by its native body becomes drawn into the negative energy vortex. Resurrections fail because the soul cannot get back to its body, and any who have been previously resurrected begin to wither and die as their life energy is drawn out. Liches cannot feed phylacteries without direct access to the Soulmonger.   The Atropal feeds directly on this glut of souls, becoming more powerful every day as it grows towards ascendancy as a dead god.  The Harpers quickly learn what they can and begin to send adventurers to deal with the problem.
