Church Break-In

The team is approached by Father Tossil. The church's vault has been broken into and one item stolen, the strange puzzle box.

Plot points/Scenes

The team is called to the church. Father Tossil is wondering if they could investigate a theft from the vault. Someone had used poisined gas to knock out Amon & the two monks. They proceeded to pass out while the thief burrowed their way through to the vault through the floor of the church. Disturbed by church members and Fathe Tossil, as well as the guardian, the thief had time to steal the Lament Configuration, and flee.   A rope & grappling hook mis left behind of relatively good enough condition, and the hole is being dealt with by the monks. A characher was seen fleeing and they think the person went in the direction of the new town. There they lost sight of the person.   A description says they are of average height, slenderly built, and wearing a cloak & covered face. All the colours of the clothing was of pale gray to dark gray, and kind of tattered. They appeared male. Why they took the box specifically is unknown at present. Whoever it was isn't known to the Thieves of Frankia.   An inspection of the buildings reveal that an empty one has a body in it and the body seems to be of a Doppelganger. It is lying on the back and holding a Configuration box, at least it looks like it. They are covered in deep thin marks similar to deep paper cuts.   If the box is examined it appears that it isn't the real one. It has been replaced with a fake. The real one doesn't seem to be present. They may examine the room further and find a strange necklace. It appears like a corrupt version of rosary beads and a head carving placed on the crucifix of a Tiefling head. It belongs to the Black Pope's followers.   Checks on the clothing shows dirt from the tunnel dropping into the vault. A money bag containing 30 silver coins lie on a table nearby and a jourenal describing that the Doppelganger had been spying on the church for a while looking for a way into the vault until they decided to tunnel in.   It also describes that the buyers of the box is three thieves. They aren't linked to the Thieves of Frankia and posing as labourers, and sent from the Saxons who want the box to sell back to the de Rais. The Doppelganger mentions that he recored this in case he is double crossed. One appears tall & wiry, one is small & stocky and one is of average height & chubby. All three prefer to hang around the local tavern where they are constantly bothering the local Thieves guild asking about jobs.   They can be tracked down and if cornered will need to be persuaded, intimidated or bought off to reveal they hid the box in a hollow tree to the east so as not to be caught with it. They used it on the Doppelganger to shut him up but hadn't realised he wrote down about them as they couldn't read or write. They are due to get paid in the next 24 hours where it will be lifted and 90 silver coins left in it's place.   The team van deal with them, hand them over to the Burgeaters, or hand them to the hieves of Frankia. The latter may also offer to stake out the tree, but would quickly return to say strange lights are appearing round the area. If investigated there is a chance that the wrong person picks it up and gets a visit from Stitchscar in their dreams later that night.   The person who tries to lift it will be a Tiefling who poisons themselves with a poison tooth if caught. They will have a rosary bead set similar to what was found, and a money bag of 90 silver. She seems to be well dressed.   The team can't find any further info on the Tiefling, though the coins are a mix of Saxon & Italian coins (roughly equal).
