East Slavic

The East Slavic peoples are made up of different tribes all thought to be derived of the Ilmen out of the Novgorod region. They dominate the areas from Novgorod down as far as regions east of West Slavic culture in central Europe down to the northern shores of the Black Sea. Many have close relations of the Kurgan horse peoples such as the old Dacians & the Cossacks, to the Alans & Avars, and the Turkic peoples east of the Black Sea. They are closely related to the West Slavs and both speak similar versions of Slavic.   They keep a few permanent settlements that they can pass through while travelling in tribal groups. They have access to a number of horses and most adult males fight on foot backed up by cavalry units. Most that exist are large and well fortified such as Kiev & Novgorod.   They bury their dead in low--lying areas in Pskov long burial mounds, with these being elongated burial mounds. The most numerous of these are found round Lake Pskov and Lake Peipus in the Novgorod region. The Finno-Ugric & Baltic peoples had a strong influence on their culture.
