Necrosis

What is Necrosis?

Necrosis is the death of cells and tissue by causation of injuries or diseases. Often, necrosis occurs when there is not enough blood flow or blockage thereof to the tissue. Necrosis is a non-reversible illness, though by use of magic it can be treated to some degree. There are several types of necrosis, gangrene being the most common.

Coagulative Necrosis

Coagulative necrosis is caused by lessened blood flow to a body of tissue. This can be formed by way of clot or other blockage inside of the blood vessels. Any cell affected by Coagulative necrosis often turns solid, dry, and white.

Causes

Hypoxia, or the of oxygen and other nutrients, can cause Coagulative necrosis. It does not often involve physical injury such as severe trauma, toxins and chronic immune responses.
The lack of oxygen can cause death of nearby cells, causing blood vessels to fail to deliver necessary nutrients or oxygen to the blood stream and vital organs. Ischemia will cause coagulative necrosis on occasion, although Ischemia more often causes liquefactive necrosis which primarily affects the central nervous system and neural tissues.

Treatment and Cell Regeneration

Cells nearest to affected tissues will begin to replicate, replacing the cells that were killed during the initial event. Some cells do not replace the deceased cells and instead aid in tissue scarring to prevent further damage and isolate the walls of permanently damaged tissue.
Antibiotics, Magic or Surgery can treat Coagulative necrosis.
Strong antibiotics can be given to the patient to reduce speed of necrotizing, allowing cells to repair damage being caused if prescribed in time. Since coagulative necrosis typically is relatively fast paced, most doctors will elect to scrape out dead cells and tissue from the blood vessels. Bypass surgery is also performed, allowing the blood to flow through a new route around the blockage in the bloodstream. You may also use a stent to prevent blockage of blood vessels in the future.
Magic, the more expensive option, may be the best bet in terms of treatment of coagulative necrosis. Magic can regenerate dead cells and tissue, leaving the area as if it was never necrotizing in the first place.

Drawing of Necrosis of the hand. Flesh can be seen actively rotting in this patient, it looks a bit gross but those who are well traveled have seen far worse injuries than this. As is said in History, ‘Tis but a flesh wound.’
