Azalea Hanabira Character in The Walking Dead: Rewritten | World Anvil

Azalea Hanabira (Ah-zay-lee-ah / Hah-nah-be-rah)

Azalea Hanabira (a.k.a. Death's Kiss)

Those still alive in the apocalypse and who have known Azalea Hanabira know that she is a force to be reckoned with. She is the loyal leader of the Udøde, a group of seven strangers united by one goal — to end the apocalypse. She doesn't take kindly to disappointment and hates being looked down upon. When capable, she helps others in need, especially those about to die. She has the unique ability to see ghosts and can even sense when the dead are approaching.   Her favorite things tend to be her childhood best friend, Carl Grimes, coffee, sweets, and talking to ghosts. However, she contains a few dislikes that can be hard to handle when in the apocalypse. Some of these dislikes can be strangers, sour things, and horses. And no matter how much she bathes, she always smells like a bloodied battlefield.
"From here to there, blood is all I've known. I have bathed in the blood of my enemies and sought aid where I had not known it to be. If you are truly what you say you are, then I am willing to help guide you back toward the light."
— Azalea to Markus

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

by Amelia Nite (Hero Forge)
Azalea has pale ashen skin that feels cold as the ice in Hel, with long dark hair trailing down past her shoulders. Her eyes glow scarlet, almost appearing like freshly spilled blood. She stands at average height (1.62 meters) for a girl her age, while having an unnaturally thin body.   Azalea dresses in typical apocalyptic attire — a shirt, leather jacket, jeans, and boots. Other than that, she has twin raven daggers, given to her as an advanced weapon from Hella. These daggers give her higher stealth and advantage on sneak attacks when in the shadows. She also has the Crown of the Wicked, a vestige of Hella and powerful artifact to control the dead. She rarely uses the crown, opting to control the dagger via her other abilities.

Special abilities

"The girl has always been unstable — claiming she can "talk" to ghosts. She is fucked up. Just get her drugged so she stops acting like this. It's embarrassing."
— Gabriel about his daughter

by Sean Sevestre (Art of MTG)
From a young age, Azalea has been able to see ghosts and talk to them as if they were still alive. At first, she never understood what her abilities were. Any time she was seen talking to herself, she was considered insane and classmates bullied her relentlessly for it. Her father, Gabriel Hanabria, had her mentally evaluated only to have the psychiatrist tell him that Azalea had schizophrenia. She was given meds to treat the symptoms, but all it did was make Azalea sick. In secret, she stopped taking the medicine, and the nausea went away and her abilities returned.
by Chris Rallis (ArtofMTG)
Talking to spirits isn't the only thing Azalea can do. Some of her abilities delve straight down to sensing when someone is about to die. When describing the feeling, she says that she often smells a morbid stench, at first, often coated in a rotten grease and blood. This ability extends to detecting walker bite wounds, which comes in handy with casting the Revivify the Bitten spell on a person who has been bitten.   Azalea can also raise the dead, whether that be a corpse or a ghost. This also grants her the power to talk to a ghost in their ancient tongue of Nedril. But her favorite thing to do is control skeletons and bones.
"So, you wanna play? Ooooh! I got just the perfect playmate for you~.
— Azalea to an enemy

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Childhood
Azalea was born on December 21st, 1998 and gifted to her biological father, Gabriel Hanabria by her mother. While she doesn't know who her birth mother is, her father wasn't the nicest man, mainly when he would come home drunk from work and neglect her. When he married his wife, Leslie Newman, he turned to abusing Azalea by pressuring her with bible talk and trying to force Catholicism upon her. Azalea was about seven-years-old at the time and didn't understand what religion was, just that it made her uncomfortable. Gabriel made her promise that no matter what, she was to only stay with Chatholicism and never let anything "Satanic" influence her.

Shortly after that, during the first day of third grade, Azalea met her classmate, Carl Grimes and the two quickly hit it off as friends. However, her father didn't take well to see Azalea being friends with a strange young boy, deeming boys to be sinners, and Gabriel attempted to keep them apart. As time went on, Azalea quickly became distant, afraid of what would happen if Carl was found out to be her friend.   Then, in September of 2010, the world ended...
The Apocalypse
As the apocalypse took over the world, Azalea was dragged with her parents north, away from Atlanta. While on the road, walkers surrounded them until her father forced her to hide while they went out hunting for supplies. It was late in the evening when her parents had yet to return. Azalea stepped out to look for them, following the streets and keeping quiet. Walkers, surprisingly, ignored her like she didn't exist.   After a few minutes of looking around, she caught sight of her parents being attacked by walkers in a small drug store. As she stood watching them, her parents spotted her and called out, telling her to shoot them. She glanced at the ground and spotted her father's hunting rifle. For a second, she contemplated picking it up, but then she just grinned and looked at her parents again. She simply stood there, watching as the walkers ate them alive. For the first time in her life, Azalea was free.   Azalea wandered through the town, hungry and struggling to survive. A few people attempted to take her in, but they always died, and she, somehow, sensed it. This was around the time she sensed something strange calling to her...

Mental Trauma

Personality
Death has always been Azalea's best friend, guiding her through life. Most of the time, she bears a grin and brushes the pain of death off her shoulder. Sometimes, she'll even chuckle ackwardly to herself, usually because a ghost has spoken to her. This gives her the appearance of insanity, and she fully ascepts that side of herself.   After dealing with so much trauma from her family, Azalea can't stand to be betrayed; it is the last straw for her. When she finds that an ally has turned their back on her in some way, she will make sure they suffer, whether that be killing them or torturing them with a cat-and-mouse game. In return, those who are loyal to her find themselves protected by any walker she controls. Her halvsie companions are the only ones who have never betrayed her.
Trauma
Her father took her ability to see ghosts as a mental disorder and had her diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age. This didn't help much as the meds she would take would make her feel funny, so she secretly stopped using them and didn't tell anyone about it. Besides the diagnosis, her father tried to pressure her with religious teachings akin to a cult. Azalea grew quickly to despise religions and has a tough time trusting religious leaders, like priests or the pope. The abuse her father instiled upon her left Azalea shortempered, quick to draw to conclusions and blame those upset her. She is slowly working on her issues.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Carl Grimes: A childhood friend of Azalea, and her first crush. She came across him during the war with the Saviors and couldn't sit by to watch him die. She used her Revivify the Bitten spell and turned Carl into a halvsie.   Duck: It was barely three months after the apocalypse began when she came across Duck, dying on the ground, a bite wound clearly visible. Once the two men with him walked away, Azalea went over to the boy and attempted to comfort him. During the last few minutes of his life, she got the urge to touch his wound and whisper the certain phrase, "Gildi lif heill."   Markus: Azalea found Markus, Shawn, and Travis dying from bites wounds about four years into the apocalypse. At the time, she knew the spell by heart and started used it to heal them. Markus tends to show jealousy when Azalea and Carl hang out.   Rick Grimes: Rick is the dad Azalea always wanted. She always saw him being kind and loving, causing her to get jealous of Carl's family life.   Shawn: Shawn was with Markus and Travis when Azalea found them.   Stian: TBW...   Travis: TBW...

Family Ties

Father: Her father was Gabriel Hanabira, a [PLACEHOLDER JOB] until the apocalypse began. Less than a month after the apocalypse began, he was torn apart and eaten by walkers in front of her. Azalea enjoyed watching him suffer to death, just as she suffered for many, many years.   Mother: Azalea does not know who her mother is, or if she's still alive. By the Paris Campaign, she has learned who her mother is.   Stepmom: Leslie Newman came into her life as the girlfriend of her father. Instantly, Azalea could not stand the woman, who constantly ordered her around and berated her, talking behind her back and making Azalea feel like she was less than nothing.
