Cormanthor Forest

Over 770 years ago, an unknown sorceror summoned several Yugoloths to attack the nearby land of Dragonreach. However, several of the Yugoloths broke free from their summoning, then raised an army named The Army of Darkness. They marched south and destroyed the Elven city of Myth Drannor in The Weeping War.
Over the next few centuries, the Elves launched dozens of expeditions to purge the forests of Cormanthor and reclaim Myth Drannor. However, there was too much evil in the forest: marauding bands of Orcs, undead wastelands, and demonic circles.
Though the Elves gave up on reclaiming the city, their forward safe zone turned into the new de-facto capital of the Elves. They named it Shalendar and turned it into the Elven fortress city.
Meanwhile, the humans of Ordulin built the Gold Road westwards through the forest, and sent caravans to the Sword Coast and beyond for trade.
But, just 30 years ago, the remnants of the Army of Darkness reformed itself and razed Shalendar in what later became known as The Whispering War.
Demons from the army of darkness, bands of orcs and evil barbarians, zombies and skeletons, and other leftovers from the Weeping War now wander the forests north of the Kingdom of Sembia.
Refugees from Shalendar (Elves, and others who lived in the forest) have since moved south. While many went to the human cities, most of the elves created a new city in the The Archwood Forest: The Golden Grove. Some have suggested opening expeditions into the abandoned cities of Cormanthor. However, all agree that it is a dangerous pursuit.
