Like most people, Dune really, really admired Atos when he was a Holy Knight. He was practically a celebrity, but he didn't fall in love with him until he realized that Atos has a very soft heart and a lot of fears/anxiety despite seeming so strong to others. Atos had just worked super hard to overcome/ignore them for the sake of others when he was younger. Atos and Dune saved each other's lives several times during the war between the Empire and the Fae Courts. They were forced to fight for the Empire, or else risk being labeled traitors and killed. Dune was an average drafted soldier without much money to even buy his own equipment while Atos was a highly trained Holy Knight blessed by Amarus. Atos never let this get to his head, however, and did his best to convince the nobility of Nyxvanus and the Empire that the common soldiers deserved better treatment. Even though Atos comes off as a "coward" to most people now (due to his PTSD that heightened his anxiety and panic attacks) and is hiding his identity, Dune still loves him. He knows what Atos has been through, and everything they have worked through together. For him, Atos has always been more than just his famous Holy Knight persona. He tries his best to support Atos as much as possible, and Atos does the same for him.
