Trained to be a paladin during high school, but decided religion wasn't really for him.
Went to a wizard college for undergrad (got in as legacy and family donated money), but mainly learned conjuration spells that were useful at parties. Withdrew after 2 years bc he felt bad for wasting his family's money.
Bummed around playing his horn in taverns for a couple months, got invited to enroll in "Bard College", where they actually trained him to be a bardish swordsman and tried to turn him into an assassin.
He didn't love that plan, but did appreciate the discipline he'd learned, so he decided to return home and offer to use all the charismatic skills he'd learned to contribute to the family business.
