Personal history
Dalinar was born the second son in the Kholin house, and had resigned himself to being a prince forever. This suited Dalinar quite fine, his older brother Gavilar had political ambition, while Dalinar craved glory in the dueling arena of the nobles, and on the field of battle. Dalinar however was named High Lord after Gavilar abdicated the seat of power in 1155, the brothers agreeing that Gavilar's pursuit of a United Alethkar would be best pursued if Dalinar handled Kholinar's military and bureaucratic policies, while Gavilar formed political maneuvers in order to shower up support.
After his brother was murdered, Dalinar became a changed man. It is rumored by the other nobles that Dalinar blames himself for drinking himself into a stupor on the night he was killed, unable to protect his brother from the Assassin in White. Since the assassination, Dalinar has adopted the military codes from the way of kings, which dictate how a noble leads his people with honor and integrity. Both Honor and Integrity are now key aspects of his life.

One important historical point of failure for High Lord Dallinar was during the Betrayal at Fourpoint pond in 1170 EOS, in which Dalinar and High Lord Sadeas attempted a joint action of attacking the army of an upstart noble who wished to overthrow High Lord Sadeas so he could be High Lord. Dalinar and Sadeas used temporary bridges to cross the river south of Fourpoint pond and attack their enemy from behind. However, after crossing the river Sadeas' forces made a hasty retreat, taking the brides with them, cutting off Dalinar, who was easily being overwhelmed by the lack of support. Dalinar, betrayed and losing men at an alarming rate, had accepted his fate and was ready to die fighting, however hoped brewed anew as the soldiers near the river saw one of the temporary bridges return giving them the chance to escape. That bridge was lead by Kaladin, the leader of the slaves who operated the bridge for Sadeas. After surviving the battle, Dalinar freed Kaladin and his men as thanks for their rescue, and provided for them, naming them his personal guards to protect his life. Sadeas attempted to reclaim his slaves, however Dalinar traded a priceless ancient artifact in for all of his slaves.
