We see the humble beginnings from which the party comes from, below you will find a synopsis of the preludes provided for each character. Solomon - We see a lizard folk speak to an old man about the meaning of empathy, and how the curse of empathy could be a gift if looked at through different eyes. Solomon doesn't agree, but he does ponder the old man's words for long after the old man and his retainers leave the shore.
The Malveillance Desert - 1169 - We see two human men break out of a wagon caravan in the middle of the desert, amidst shouts from other slaves in other wagons, the two make a break for it, running as far as they can get from the slavers. The scene closes as slaves brake into a riot.
Quilletta - Seeing an opportunity as the appearance of High Lord Dalinar Kholin has distracted her parents, Quilletta escapes from her own engagement party to be miserable and cry in the stables with the horses, who seem to be her only real friends. As she cries, she is found by one of Dalinar's guards by accident. He offers her advise about running and taking control of her own destiny, and the scene ends as Quilletta hastily returns to the party before she is noticed missing, asking herself what really was stopping her from escaping the Gellantra house.
Vestele - The casino job was ruined, everything had gone wrong, and now Vestele of the upper isles finds herself sprinting for all she's got with her uncle trailing, and her pursuers close behind. Her uncle falls due to his wounds, and tells her to leave him, go so far as pull his gun, threaten and belittle her into leaving. Gunshots ring out as Vestele escapes the casino's city. Alone.
Kassian - A short scene, of Kassian as he reacts to being banished from his village, forced to live anywhere else on Roshar except his home island.

Our tale begins with a young Ardent, preparing to leave her home for the first time. Emelina and her retainer leave her home in Kholinar, hoping to find a position as a Knight for a lord. Meanwhile Therion and Kassian, two rough adventurers turn their heads to Kelathar with the hope of new monsters to slay. Honey Fireforge and her brother are shipping their goods to Kelathar as well, however Honey plans for this to be a one way trip to find adventure. Vestelle arrives in Kelathar in the hopes of a new crew and a new score, while Quilletta enters the River City's gates after years of almost complete isolation, with the hope of discovery, knowledge, and adventure. Emelina is not the only Ardent with eyes on Kelathar, as the bright Lyra heads in that direction as well, with a message of healing. And while the others have arrived in Kelathar, Angelique and Soloman have yet to arrive, or realize just how close their own destinies are intertwined with the others in the River city.

Related Reports

The party meets at the Fire Flower Tavern, where they are introduced to Ma, a human woman who seems to know Therion from previous visits to Kelathar. After some time, the adventurers begin speaking to each other, and get to know one another, Emelina preaches the good word of the Almighty (almost to the choir as most of the people around are Vorin) and she and Lyra briefly exchange notes on being Ardents. Quilletta then recognizes Emelina as the child of an Ardent who spent quite some time at the Gellantra estate teaching dueling and sword practice, and attempts to hide. Honey eats ravenously at her table, and seems to enjoy fruit jelly and fish. Vestelle quietly watches all of them from her seat, while Kassian and Therion drink at the bar.
After a brief time where everyone becomes somewhat friendly with each other, the party hears a crash from outside, as Therion's mechanical Owlbear goes on a rampage. The party is able to subdue the creature, and they all seem to grow an appreciation for each other's combat abilities. Therion stays outside after the fight and begins repairing his Owlbear Achilles, while the rest return to the tavern. The party again socializes, and Quilletta and Emelina reunite (while Vestelle attempts to listen in on their conversation).
Meanwhile, outside, two men cloaked in shadows comments on the parties abilities. The only features noticeable are a pair of wolf or fox like ears on the head of one, and a spear strapped to the back of the other. The first one admits he appreciated their arrival, and that he didn't want to have to subdue the Owlbear himself. The other agrees that the adventurers they had seen were quite capable, but disregards the comment about having to subdue the owlbear. The first then asks if the party seems like a group the other had in mind, to which "we'll see" is all the response given. The two then head down the alleyway they were watching Therion from, and disappear.
The next morning, the party is offered an invitation to the manor of a city noble, with the promise of employment. The party all travel to Lord Sorbrizal's manor, and are ushered into the lord's office and await his arrival.

Notes

  • Therion seems to know Ma from the Tavern, suggesting he's stayed there before.
  • In the Fire Flower Tavern, the unnamed Tiefling barkeep has a battleaxe "for intimidating drunk clients or slashing prices".
  • Lord Sorbrizal manor is noticeably one of the largest in the city, aside from the High Lord's own castle.
  • Vestelle and Therion both get the sense that Sorbrizal may be involved in underground/shady deals, since he is incredibly wealthy but also almost unknown, similar to nobles in Waterdeep.
  • Quilletta has been missing for about 2 years according to Emelina, and her parents are still searching for her (though they have almost given up on ever seeing their daughter again).
  • Achilles has a compartment in his back which launches a great sword to Therion's hand, much like R2D2 shooting Luke's lightsaber to him in Return of the Jedi.
  • Initially Lyra was alarmed at meeting Emelina, as Ardents aren't allowed to own weapons or fight in battles due to the actions of the Hierocracy, however as she listens in on Emelina's conversations and talks with her, Lyra realizes Emelina has been training to join an order of Ardents that are an exception to this rule.
