Lady Evelyn (a.k.a. The Gray Lady)
Lady Evelyn is the wife of Sir Gerard. She is the daughter of Lord Paschal (Warden of the Northern Marches) and Lady Ava. She grew up in Nordhaven Castle with her parents facing the Norse threat. She is a Centurion Shieldmaiden and commands Castle Warrick when Sir Gerard is in the field.

General Physical Condition
Excellent for a woman in her mid-forties. She is very athletic and an excellent warrior.

Physical quirks
She walks with a limp in her left leg from where she took a Hungarian spear in her knee when she was in her 20's. She killed the warrior who stabbed her and his lieutenant with her gladia in a battle that is still retold by other family members.
Special abilities
She is an excellent shot with a bow (and is able to draw a far heavier bow than any other Shieldmaiden in the Order).

Personal history
Daughter of the Lord Paschal (Warden of the Northern Marches) and Lady Ava. She was traveling with her father and a force of Centurions to Castle Warrick for her arranged wedding to Sir Gerard. Sir Gerard was leading a force of knights north to meet them when they were attacked by a large Hungarian raiding party. The attack caught his forces by surprise and Lady Evelyn led an attack on the flank of the Hungarians that turned the tide. She took two arrows in the left knee. Her instantaneous reaction seized the initiative from the Hungarians and saved the day. She killed the chieftain of the raiders and one of his lieutenants with her bow. The attack left her with a limp because of the injury to her knee and a long, thin scar on her left cheek from the lieutenant's sword.
Education
She is an excellent warrior and rider, she can read and do mathematics, and has read most of the history books that she could get her hands on.
Mental Trauma
She never told anyone but she worried that she would be less desirable after her injuries because of her limp and the scar on her face. The fact that Sir Gerard saw these as beautiful things about her meant a lot to her on a very deep level.
Intellectual Characteristics
She is a smart, tough, no nonsense, practical woman who is not known for being sympathetic. She cares about others and their problems but she is much more of a "So what are you going to do about that?" type of person than a "Come cry on my shoulder you poor dear," kind of person. She will give you all the support you need if you are going to stand on your own two feet and deal with your problems head on, she will not waste her time and energy on anyone who is seeking to avoid their problems or escape their responsibilities. She is called the Gray Lady because she has gray hair, gray eyes, and a cool, unemotional temperament. She is rarely angry and rarely loving, rarely sad, and rarely happy. She seems almost to be more at home on the dreary rainy days than on the sunny days. She is not always the most fun to be around but everyone absolutely wants her in their corner when the chips are down.

Motivation
Feels that she needs to hard as nails on the other shieldmaidens and handmaidens to make sure that they have received the training that they need. She is very concerned about making a mistake when she is in charge of the castle and getting people killed. She is driven to protect her people and she feels that maximizing their training so that they can help protect themselves is one way to do that. She sees their extended family (everyone attached to their castle) as a single great warrior of God with her husband as the sword and herself as the shield.
