Ash City

Although its true name is Sanig'nicin, the home of the Chosen of Ashes is more commonly known as Ash City. Founded by the members of the religion during their century of wandering, it is the largest Asher-controlled settlement in Wresnet.   Ash City is a difficult place to live. Fires burn all around the city on a continual basis, filling the air with smoke and covering most of the surfaces with soot. Obvious non-Ashers are treated as second-class citizens in the community and are in constant danger of lynching on suspicion of heresy, so most quickly learn to at least blend in with members of the dominant religion, adopting the drab clothing and suspicious mien of the Chosen of Ashes.   The town's living population is matched, if not dwarfed, by its Ashborn population. Most basic labor and defense of the town is handled by Ashborn with Asher overseers. More complicated trades are still handled by living beings, but the Ashborn are never far away. It can be difficult to quantify how many Ashborn are actually present in Ash City at any given time, but some estimates suggest that there is enough animate ash in the city for three medium Ashborn to exist for every one living person.

Demographics

The vast majority of the living population of Ash City are members of the Chosen of Ashes. The remainder are assorted members of the remaining Thought-Blessed races, although those with innate magical abilities, such as Forest Gnomes and Tieflings, are extremely rare.

Government

Very little is known about the government of Ash City. The Chosen of Ashes certainly rule, but their internal structure is kept very secretive. Most non-Ashers don't openly question this, however, as any speech against the local government has the potential to be read as heresy.

Defences

The entire city is surrounded by a thick wall of rough-hewn stone called the Ring by locals. Ashborn and their Asher handlers patrol the Ring, keeping an eye out for potential dangers. Dormant Ashborn are also hidden throughout the city and can be called upon by any Asher that witnesses a crime, or in automatic response to an unlawful act of violence. Regardless of the crime, most criminals that are caught rather than killed outright find themselves joining the ranks of the city's Ashborn and bolstering their defenses.
