Learned magic

Many of the Innate magic skills can be learned by someone of sufficient power. However, learning to use a power that is not innate is laborious, time-consuming, and not for the faint-hearted.   Other forms of learned magic include:   Shield magic. Used to protect the practitioner from malicious forms of magic. Shield magic includes:
  • wards to hide the use of magic (demons and gholems are attracted to discharges of magic. Gholems will kill you outright. Demons can't hurt you physically, unless they've possessed a physical body, but they report back to the Shadowman who will send his Nithlim to deal with anyone powerful enough to threaten him)
  • wards that trigger an alarm if intruders approach
  • shields that protect the user from a direct onslaught of magic or unwanted intrusions of magic eg mind-reading, mind-control)
Words of Power. These are words in the Old Tongue, the language of the gods and the great dragons. Used with intent by people of power, they can be used to weave spells or to enhance natural gifts or natural properties. Frequently used by the Dverren to add strength and power to their tools and weapons.   (Note - before the Purges of recent times, schools of magic could be found in every major city in Talmain, eanbling people of power to develop and broaden their skills. Now the schools have all been destroyed, along with vast libraries of magical knowledge. A few books remain, secreted away at great risk to their owners. Using magical powers is now punishable by death.)
