The Drowning

The seas of Otherverse are plagued by a dangerous entity that can travel from realm to realm via the oceans. It is a water elemental, an entity without a physical body itself that manifests via the unfortunates who have drowned and then claimed for itself.

It is called the Drowning.

An incorporeal force the Drowning seeks only to spread. Like a virus. It finds the body of a sapient being and infects it. Human sized or larger, the Drowning cares not. Those it has claimed join the throng, innumerable bodies that drift through the cold ocean depths. As the number of bodies under its control grows the Drowning will grow bolder, hungrier and openly attack coastal settlements and underwater habitats; a tide of rotting corpses and aquatic leviathans animated by a singular and terrible will. Each being dragged down into the depths joins the Drowning.

Whilst the Drowning can be driven back, its horde destroyed one by one, it is never truly defeated. The spirit, the Drowning itself, endures and moves on, travelling the realms via the oceans in search of another being who has succumbed to the sea. And the process begins anew.
