Kallian Tabris

Warden-Commander Kallian Tabris (a.k.a. Hero of Ferelden)

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Kallian was born in 9:12 Dragon, the daughter of Cyrion and Adaia Tabris. Her mother, a skilled warrior, trained her to use a sword from a young age. Adaia was killed by Denerim city guards when Kallian was younger, which made Cyrion very protective of his daughter.   When Kallian came of age, her father arranged a marriage for his daughter to Nelaros , and despite her protests, Kallian agreed to the marriage. On the day of her wedding, a Grey Warden named Duncan came to visit the Elder of the Denerim Alienage, Valendrian. While he was visiting, a local lord named Vaughan and his acquaintances came by, behaving abusively toward some of the women of the Alienage. Kallian's cousin, Shianna, knocked Vaughan unconscious, which led to Vaughan and his friends returning during the wedding ceremony later on and abducting the young women of the alienage, Kallian included.   Kallian awoke in a room in the Arl of Denerim's estate, still in her wedding dress, along with the other women from the alienage. When guards came to take the women to Vaughan, Kallian disarmed one of them, taking their sword and using it to kill the guards. When she escaped from the room, she found her cousin Soris and Nelaros in the hallway outside, having come to rescue them. Kallian sent Soris to escort the rest of the women back to the Alienage while she and Nelaros went to find Shianni, who had already been taken by Vaughan's men. She found Shianni in Vaughan's room, and while her cousin has never spoken about what happened in that room, it was easy enough for Kallian to guess. She killed Vaughan and his men, but not before one of the guards struck Nelaros down. Kallian took his wedding ring from his body, whispering a prayer to the gods for him before she snuck Shianni out of the Arl's estate.   When she brought Shianni back to the Alienage, they were met by Valendrian, Soris, and Duncan. After telling them what happened, the Denerim guards arrived to arrest whoever attacked the estate. Kallian took sole responsibility for the attack, a story that was bolstered by her bloodstained wedding dress - and one that conveniently protected Soris and Shianni - as well as Nelaros' memory. The guards moved to arrest her, but Duncan stepped forward, invoking the Grey Wardens' Right of Conscription, thus conscripting her into the Grey Wardens.   Following the Battle of Ostagar, Kallian was one of two surviving Grey Wardens - along with Alistair Theirin. Their primary mission was to gather an army and defeat the Fifth Blight. Kallian and Alistair found aid with The Dalish, the dwarves of Orzammar, and the mages of the Circle of Magi.   Before the final battle against Urthemiel, Kallian learned that the only way to permanently kill an archdemon is the sacrifice of a Grey Warden. As the only two living Grey Wardens, this meant that either Kallian or Alistair would have to die. However, one of their companions, Morrigan came to them with a ritual, one that would help whichever Warden that struck down the archdemon to escape their death. She explained that it was a form of Blood magic known long before the Circle of Magi was created, a dark ritual that would ensure the essence of th earchdemon was lured into an unborn child bearing the taint, rather than the Grey Warden slaying the archdemon. Morrigan believed that the child would survive, and possess the soul of one of the Old Gods, freed of the darkspawn corruption. After discussing it with Alistair, it was decided that he would perform the ritual with Morrigan.   It is not publicly known if the ritual was successful; however, both Kallian and Alistair survived the final battle with Urthemiel, striking down the archdemon and ending the Fifth Blight.   Kallian was named Warden-Commander of Ferelden, while Alistair was crowned King of Ferelden at the conclusion of the Ferelden Civil War. Kallian traveled to Vigil's Keep to assume command of the Grey Wardens there. However, the keep was discovered to have been assaulted by Darkspawn, and something amiss was noticed as such an organized attack would have taken an intelligent leader to direct, something thought impossible without the presence of an Archdemon. A new, talking darkspawn - a Disciple - was discovered to have been the leader of the enemy forces and was defeated.   Kallian soon learned of an oncoming war, as darkspawn had taken the city of Amaranthine. As soon as she arrived to attempt to break the siege of Amaranthine, she received word of another darkspawn horde heading for Vigil's Keep. The constable of Amaranthine informed her that the city was already lost, and she should direct her attention toward attempting to save the Keep. Kallian realized that with the darkspawn having ravaged Amaranthine for three days already, the chances of anyone being left alive in the city were very slim, and if they were dealing with a new darkspawn threat, the Grey Wardens would be more necessary than ever - especially since she could no longer call on Alistair. She turned her back on Amaranthine, proceeding instead to the Keep to break the siege there, leaving the city to burn.   Not much is known of Kallian's whereabouts after this point. The Inquisition received one letter from her during the War against the Elder One, but her whereabouts are still unknown.
To Her Worship, Inquisitor Lavellan:

I wish that I had helpful information regarding Corypheus, but due to my own limited
training during the Blight, I know less of ancient darkspawn lore than do most
Wardens. I am engaged in a search of my own. All Grey Wardens who do not fall
in battle eventually fall to something known as the Calling, a magic that preys upon
our own connection to the Blight and the darkspawn. Rather than such foul magic
eventually leading to my death, I am determined to find a way to negate this Calling
and save all Wardens from its effects.

I appreciate your warning regarding Corypheus. Fortunately,my own search has taken
me out of the area where the supposed magister is operating, and while I have
encountered challenges of my own, they have not involved any weaknesses
related to my Grey Warden abilities.

As I have little useful information to offer, please accept the accompanying gifts instead.
If, in my quest, I find anything that may be of use to you in your fight against
Corypheus, I will send it to you immediately.

In closing, I wish you luck. This world of the shemlen is a difficult one for our kind,
and I can only imagine the pressure of leading the Inquisition, an organization
dedicated to the Chantry, while staying true to the Way of the Three Trees.

May Mythal protect you in your quest, and Andruil bless your hunt.

Yours,
Warden-Commander Tabris of Ferelden
