"Valdris Was Never"

"Valdris was never an agreeable boy—
His tongue tells tales of rebellion.
But he was so fast,
And quick with his spear,
No one quite knew where he came from.   Valdris was never quite the quietest boy—
His attacks are loud and they're joyful.
But he learned the ways of nobler men,
And he knew how to enrage them.   He would always like to say,
'Why change the past,
When you can own this day?'
Today he will fight,
To keep his way.
He's a fighter and king,
And he'll tempt your fate.   He would always like to say,
'Why change the past,
When you can own this day?'
Today he will fight,
To keep his way.
He's a fighter and king,
And he'll tempt your fate.   Valdris was never quite the wealthiest boy—
Some say he lives in a tavern.
But he was so sharp,
And quick with a spear—
His strikes like a dragon.   Valdris was never quite the gentlest boy—
His eyes were sharp like a razor.
But he knew the ways of commoner men,
And he knew how to relate to them.   He would always like to say,
'Why change the past,
When you can own this day?'
Today he will fight,
To keep his way.
He's a fighter and king,
And he'll tempt your fate.   He would always like to say,
'Why change the past,
When you can own this day?'
Today he will fight,
To keep his way.
He's a fighter and king,
And he'll tempt your fate."   — Song written by Zithers, a famous Orlesian musician, praising Valdris Kai'teih

Commentary

"When asked for inspiration for my piece regarding her, Lucia responded with, 'Think not of me, but of the man who deserved this song more than I ever could. Sing songs of his name, for he was my equal from a foundation of nothing.' She later inspired this song when she mentioned, 'Valdris held the belief that he needed to be the future king of Rivain. He was confident and daring, but concerned and caring. The world would've been a better place with him watching over it.'   And, daring reader, if you wish for my grandiose opinion: I believe the saddest truth is that a Grand Tourney never came around for this man to participate. From what I've gathered, he may have been one of the best duelists in all of Thedas!"   — Foot notes written by the famous Orlesian bard Zither on his sheet music dedicated to Valdris Kai'teih
