"I’ve had stints of not believing in the Maker. When you’re forced to live the entirety of your childhood in a tower, you have plenty of time to question why such a benevolent god would ever force such a curse upon you. If the Maker did care for us, why would She turn Her back away from us and not care for us? Having such a curse be the defining feature of my existence... some might think I’d hate it, but I think the Chantry takes the correct stance on the matter. If I were not raised the way I was, my community would have feared what I could do and what I could become. They would ostracize me if not outright attack me before I’d have even learned my first incantation. The Chantry gave me a pathway towards camaraderie and family. The Chant of Light is something I’ve struggled with for a long time. I’m not sure I agree with everything it says, but all this considered I still believe in the Maker. The existence of the Fade and the city so many have dreamed of just seems all too coincidental. Also, I want to believe that there’s something pleasant waiting for me in the afterlife. Thinking that I’ll one day get to reach the paradise of the Maker so long as I fall not far from the Chant of Light is an inspiring thought. Is the Chant that unreasonable? I think not. It asks of me to be forthright, benevolent, altruistic, and loving. Andraste’s march against the Imperium, her winning despite the Imperium being the most powerful nation in Thedas’s history... things like that don’t just happen. When Andraste died, we failed the Maker as her children, but I like to think that the Maker was acting as any good parent should. We have been punished for our actions and when we have shown retribution She will return to us, bringing paradise with Her. Spreading that message is possible, just look at the many city elves who have a joint belief in the Maker and their old pantheon. In a few generations, I’m certain they’ll see reason."
