"Sitting on my throne, I see every city in the empire. If I must burn one to save the rest, I will weep, but I will light the torch."Celene I is the Empress of Orlais, having succeeded her uncle Florian when she was just sixteen. Celene is part of House Valmont and many call her "the Lioness".

Personal history
Celene's ascension to the throne marked a period of intense struggle in the empire. Florian, the previous emperor, had been ineffective and left many Orlesians from the lowly farmers to the highest of nobles all wanting something more. His death was sudden and left the country on the brink of civil war as there was no clear heir since he had never had children.
Celene managed to climb her way onto the throne after Florian's untimely death. She was incredibly young, so many nobles poised themselves to influence or even overthrow her. As well, rumors also circulated about her having planned Florian's assassination in order to get the throne for herself. However, she was an adept player of The Grand Game and over time proved herself worthy of the title of Empress of Orlais.
Celene focused much of her early rulership on mending the cultural wounds inflicted by the Ferelden Rebellion. Her current focus is on inspiring something of a cultural renaissance in the Orlesian empire. She has been a fervent patron of education and the arts. In particular, the University of Orlais and the Grande Royeaux theater owe much of their current reputation to her rule. Before Celene's intervention, the University of Orlais was severely stifled by the Chantry's limitations and lack of funding. In result, it served mostly as a dumping ground for the younger children of the lesser nobility. Now, the University of Orlais is one of the most prestigious institutions all across Thedas going so far as to attract nobles from other nations.
