Personal history
In her youth, Marethari acted as the First to the Keeper of the Sabrae clan. During a particularly egregious winter when the clan used to reside in the Frostback Mountains, Avvar mountaineers attacked the clan. The Keeper was several wounded and Marethari's husband was dead. With little ability to fight back the clan fled to the Brecilian Forest where several other Dalish clans had already fled to.
With the Keeper's whereabouts unknown, Marethari had to rise up from being the First and was thrust into being the Keeper. In her desperation and anger, she sought an individual that would make sure something like this would never happen again to her clan. A deal was struck: for Marethari's unwavering aid in this individual's "time of need", the individual would create a land for the Sabrae that would be protected from the forces of men. They both agreed to the terms and went their own way.
Spoiler: Campaign 1
Many years later, after the Jrid decimated the Wardens at Dur Themriel, the Warden-Commander Gregory Flume was suffering from the effects of lyrium addiction. His time was running out and he needed help. Marethari was made aware of this and had her First, Camhlen, try to cure Warden-Commander Flume of his addiction.
Months later, the Wardens returned with Camhlen and sought out a magical elven mirror that Camhlen wanted to learn more about. Marethari believed that inside the mirror was a demon and that Camhlen had been tricked into learning how to use the mirror to unleash the demon. Thus, before Camhlen returned, she tried to destroy the demon. She found no ability capable of fighting the demon while in the mirror, so she instead released it and tricked the demon into possessing her. When Camhlen and the Wardens came to retrieve the mirror, Marethari told them she had to be killed otherwise the demon would be free.
Marethari was killed and so too was the demon. Her final words revealed that despite exiling Camhlen, she always loved him like a son and that she always hoped he'd change his ways from being a blood mage .
