Oswit Vuerrin

Templar-Knight, Lieutenant of South Reach, Knight of the Efrimir

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Oswit was born near Redcliffe Village and raised by Arl Eamon Vuerrin, with little knowledge of who his father was and that his mother had been a serving maid who died in childbirth. As a child, Oswit was seldom the focus of the arl as he was a terribly busy man. Instead, Oswit worked as a stableboy. Eamon's wife, Arlessa Isolde, wanted no such child distracting Eamon and demanded he be given to the Chantry. Arl Eamon acquisced when she demanded such things. On the first caravan going in the direction of Bournshire, Ferelden, Oswit was sent off to the monastery there.   Alistair trained to become a Templar for many years by this Chantry branch, this being how he learned most of his martial skills. He spent some number of years working with the Order but he eventually found himself to be ill-suited to a life of religious devotion. When Malcolinus Flume, Warden-Commander at the time, just so happened to come by the monastery at one point, he saw Oswit desperately struggling to find his own identity. The Warden-Commander knew that Arl Huget Erickson of South Reach was looking for a new lieutenant and offered to put a good word in for the young man. Oswit took the offer, resigned from the Templar Order on good terms, and later became the lieutenant to the South Reach's arl.   Some time later, Edward Pavus and Arthur's wife, Elizabeth, brought word of Jrid attacks to South Reach's arl. The two requested that a detachment of men be sent down to salvage the refugee situation and make sure the arl's citizens were not being killed as they fled their lands. Oswit headed this detachment. He met the refugees from Rootstart along the Imperial Highway and helped to escort them to South Reach and eventually a few of them to the arl.   Months later, Oswit received news of Redcliffe's Arl falling ill. Oswit rushed to his side since Arl Eamon was effectively his father. Knowing he needed to do something to save Eamon, he began his hunt for Andraste's Sacred Ashes. When he came to Denerim, he learned news that his only lead, Ferdinand Genitivi had been murdered. Later he and the rest of the Efrimir were called back to Redcliffe by the Arlessa. The Arlessa informed the knights that the task was now placed into the hands of the Wardens. After seeing the Wardens eventually cure his father and being given an offer to aid the Wardens, Oswit decided that alongside the Wardens was where he'd be most useful, especially considering the threat of the Jrid.   Talk to him more, become his friend, and you'll learn more about him.

Education

Oswit was formally trained by the Templar Order with respect to opposing magic, understanding the Maker's religion, and of the dangers surrounding apostasy. From the rigorous training he endured, Oswit has gained some levels of resilience against the effects of magic, tools to oppose mages, and the martial training to keep himself—and those he's meant to protect—safe.

Personality Characteristics

Vices & Personality flaws

Leaving the Templar Order has been a physically demanding experience. The Templar Order has complete control over the dispersion of lyrium all across central Thedas. While in the Order, Templars must regularly ingest lyrium which allows them to build up their immunity to the harmful effects of magic. When one leaves the Order, the amount given is often much less than they need but the hunger for it rarely, if ever, lessens. Though he's still sent stipends by the Order, he feels the effects of lyrium withdrawal. On his worst days, he sometimes lapses into terrible memories or sees hallucinations.
