Raytooth

The Raytooth is a beast of the wilds that dwells in swamp-like regions or where river beds can be found. They are large, meat-eating creatures that pose great threat to people who traverse through regions where they may be found. These cretures have adapted to have a leathery exterior skin that allows them to blend in with the environment they are surrounded by or submerged within.   They may also be referred to as "rays".

Basic Information

Anatomy

The skin of a raytooth is constantly in fluctuation to match that which surrounds it. This allows the raytooth to dwell at the bottom of rivers and swamps unimpeded, which is useful since it seems as though they sleep for the majority of their lifespan. This change of coloration allows them to easily catch prey when they are awake.   Another somewhat disturbing detail is that they have hundreds of razor-like teeth on their underside and can use these to great effect to fight any who disturb or hunt them. On top of all this, they also have incredibly long tails which supposedly can paralyze any it strikes.

Growth Rate & Stages

Since the raytooth species hasn't been studied all that much, it is unknown what the different stages of life look like for a growing raytooth. Wives' tales suggest that an adult raytooth can grow to be the size of a building and can crush a building of their size in a single clap of their flippers. A human would do well not to be caught in the trap of any raytooth, let alone one the size of a building.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Raytooth skin is used in beautiful dresses found in Antiva. Despite the creature being dead, its skin still fluctuates between beautiful colors depending on lighting. The teeth of a raytooth also find some use, particularly as devastating arrow-heads but also as sturdy tools such as lock-picks.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Amongst the river fishers of eastern Thedas, it is common wisdom to tread lightly around river beds. The reason this is done is because they believe that some raytooth have adapted to being submerged for so long that they can no longer see and instead rely entirely upon movements in the ground, sound, and touch as indicators for if food is nearby. Many of these fishermen also have some home-made concoction that helps dull the senses of creatures in the water near where they plan to fish. This concoction is almost as unique as each individual and has been passed down from parents to children for many generations. Spilling this into the water near where one plans to fish can help keep any raytooth at bay.
