Goblin

With wrinkled skin, squat faces, and raggedy, oversized ears, goblins could have an almost puppy-like look about them. Beady eyes and tiny, pointed teeth tell a different story, one much closer to a goblin's true character. Greedy, territorial, and aggressive, goblins are often considered more like pests than people, and their tendency to gather in large numbers contributes to this perception.   Goblins are among the most adaptable species in Thera, altering their biology to suit new environments within a single generation. For this reason, there are countless subspecies scattered across the continents: winter goblins, desert goblins, aquatic goblins, and cave goblins are the main groups, with many subdivisions among them.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Physical traits vary to suit their environment, but most goblins hover around four feet, with spindly figures and scrawny limbs that struggle to put on muscle mass. They have large feet and hands, and their fingers end in sharp, claw-like hooks. Body hair ranges from none at all to full coverage, and skin tone varies from dark green to grey, blue, red, and brown.   Aquatic goblins tend to bluer skin, though swamp varieties may have more green. They have gills on the neck that augment the lungs, extending the amount of time spent underwater but not eliminating the need to surface. Their lungs are also larger, giving a barrel-chested appearance. Body hair disappears, reducing drag underwater, and fingers and toes grow pronounced webbing. Aquatic goblins who live in rivers and water with strong currents have an easier time developing muscle mass.   Winter goblins are the furriest goblins of all, covered head to toe in thick, bushy hair. Their noses are flatter and their ears smaller and less fleshy. Their feet are large and wide, with slight webbing to spread out their weight over the snow. They put on fat a bit easier than other goblin types, but still not much.   Cave goblins have sickly grey to green-grey skin. Their ears and eyes are huge, and some varieties have a second, transparent eyelid to protect their eyes when transitioning from dark to light. They tend to be the smallest and scrawniest goblins, standing just over three feet.   Desert goblins can be tan, orange, or red. They have hair on their head and backs, but not much anywhere else. Where most goblins are nocturnal, desert goblins tend to be diurnal and have the weakest night vision of the bunch - though still better than a human's.
