The Elven Pantheon
It is said that the elves once lived on the moon above Theros. They were celestial beings, and they were immortal, but there was a disaster. Something terrible happened, though what that was has been forgotten, and the elves had to flee their home in the heavens. They climbed aboard their sky ships and sailed down to Theros. None of the elves knew if they would find a safe place to land. The titan gods still walked on the surface, and they were known to be chaotic and at times violent. In order to give themselves the greatest chance at surviving, the elves had to split up. The ships sailed in different directions, each searching for a new home.
One of the fleets found its way to Anestor. To the elves' surprise, it was green. Much of what they'd seen while sailing had been burnt and barren, but this land was full of life. The people of Astreia, the gnomes, came to the elves and assisted them. The elves were grateful to find friendly faces. Like the gnomes, the elves were deeply connected to their gods, and most had an innate ability to cast magic. Mana flowed through their blood as water through a river. Unfortunately, the gods of the elves were far away from Theros, and as their children touched the soil of another world, the elves lost their immortality.
At the time, elves were very spiritual, and their beliefs were very similar to Astreia. Though they were in mourning at the loss of their homeland and their immortality, they had found a new home. They missed their gods, and still yearned for them, so they performed rituals during celestial events in honor of them.
When the Marcisians came, the elves, in particular, were targeted. They had many gods at the time. They also had revered seers, who could look into pools of calm water on the night of a full moon and see the future. They had come from another world. This made them the Marcisians' biggest target in Anestor. Their priests were slaughtered in mass. Their mages were hunted. Non-mages were enslaved, and any mention of the elven gods led to death. Their holy sites were desecrated and replaced with cathedrals to the Sacred Eight, and though it is still remembered in elven society that they sailed to Anestor on flying ships from the moon, the names of their gods were lost in history. As a people, they are very much lost. Their gods, their homeland, their immortality, their history have all been stolen from the elves.
