Volcanalis

Volcanic god of fire, wrath and destruction

An old god of the plane of fire. Volcanalis is usually depicted as giant forged in fire, magma and volcanic rock. He instills in his followers a wrathful desire for vengeance and destruction. Those seeking vengeance would pray to this god, cursing their enemies in the hopes that Volcanalis might destroy them. Long ago, when the world was new, Volcanalis and other titanic gods walked Theros freely. Volcanalis's fire and magma helped shape the world as we know it, building mountain ranges, and burning out valleys, but as the age of civilization began, Volcanalis's chaotic and wanton destruction were no longer acceptable. Volcanalis was not considered evil, by any standards, and was still revered as a god who helped shape the world, but he was a danger. By his very nature, Volcanalis destroyed all hope of progress. He had to be stopped, or the humanoid races of Theros would forever be nomadic. They would never be safe.   A celestial hero, Atreyu, servant of Astreia, rose up against the titanic god. He led an army to corral Volcanalis into a valley deep in the Dunkirk Mountains. The walls of the valley were steep, and mages covered them with slippery frost. Volcanalis's power swelled, as he prepared to destroy all who would dare attempt to contain him, but it was too late. He was trapped, stepping onto a portal to a plane of fire. The portal was sealed by Atreyu, and for the first time in history, people could build cities without the fear of Volcanalis destroying all they worked for.   As eons passed, Volcanalis's rage at being contained continued to grow. He is forever looking for a foothold to return to Theros, and continue his path of destruction, swearing vengeance against civilization. Whenever a volcano erupts, it is believed that Volcanalis has found a portal between the fire plane and the material plane, and the magma and smoke and fire are his rage emanating through the portal.   Volcanalis seeks servants in the material plane, particularly those touched by the fire plane. He is connected to them through blood, and like all gods, is capable of influencing the thoughts and actions of those connected to him. These servants can be reached when in close proximity to a portal to the fire plane. They can resist, but Volcanalis preys on their insecurities and fears. He twists their desires for justice into a desire for vengeance, and with the help of an elementally inclined person on the outside, Volcanalis can widen a portal to the fire plane, first to release his foot soldiers, the fire elementals onto the material plane, and eventually large enough that he might finally return to exact his revenge on civilization and the world of men.
