Gartian Mariner

To see more generalised information please read the main Gartian article.
There's one of two reactions to seeing one of the blue-caped sea demons. Either, you're the one they're helping, in which case you'll be praising the heavens, or you're the one they're trying to fend off. If the latter is the case, you'd better hope they didn't see you because they ain't as noble as their city counterparts!
— Caedin Red - First mate of the Harpy
These specialised Gartian are trained to work on ship out at sea and as such are mostly hired by market groups in order to defend their ships during voyage. However, unlike their city counterparts, the Mariner is contracted to a ship not the sponsor directly. On top of this, they cannot be called to aid the city in internal crisis, instead they can be drafted to form a naval force when the city is being attacked from sea. Due to this Gartian mariners may go their entire careers without ever being called to serve their city goverment.

Requirements

Like their city counterparts the mariner requires a sponsor before they can become a Gartian. However instead of a noble house, a mariner needs to find a ship to sponsor them. As for additional qualifications that is up to the captain of the ship sponsoring the mariner. Often a captain will require all his Gartian Mariners to be able to swim as well as have previous experience on ships. In the most extreme cases, ship captains may require their potential Gartians to have been backed by a cleric of (water god).

Appointment

Mariners much like their city counter parts, only need to sign their contract in order to become a Gartian. However, often times in celebration of the contract being signed a Gartian Mariner will often be thrown from the side of their ship they have been contracted too.

Responsibilities

The roles of a Mariner revolves around the defence of the ship they are contracted to. However, attacks on the high seas are not very common so most of the time Gartian Mariners are made to help with the day to day running of the ship. These day to day roles are normally the nicer jobs on the ship, such as: keeping watch, maintaining crew morale and managing equipment.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Unlike their city counter parts the mariner does not dress to represent their sponsor as everyone they are with is paid by the same person. Instead, mariners have a standardised uniform to show their rank. Their outfit and equipment is as follows:
Cape - The cape of a mariner is a simple short blue over-shoulder which is emblazoned with the symbol of the group that own the ship the mariner is contracted to. The capes are much shorter than their city counterparts due to the more active nature of the mariners.
Hat - For head wear the mariners have a simple tricone made of leather which is normally accompanied with a coloured feather. Often colours will help Gartians on the same ship identify one another especially in stormy weather.
Rapier - The main weapon of the mariner is a simple rapier which allows for a more fluid and individualist fighting style more suited for on deck combat.
Longbow - Often mariners will pelt enemies before they board their ship and this bow offers a cheap and easy way to do so. For the wealthiest of contractors their Gartians my be equipped with a single shot pistol.
