Ardetian

The Ardetian people are an ethnic group primarily inhabiting the Ardetian Islands located to the south of the continent of Orynthia. They are a diverse group known for their seafaring skills, vibrant cultures, and a strong connection to the sea and nature. The Ardetian people are not a monolithic group but rather an amalgamation of various sub-ethnicities that share certain cultural traits and historical experiences.

Ethnic Subgroups

There are several sub-ethnicities within the Ardetian people, some of which include:
  • Talindrians - Inhabiting the largest island of Nalindra, the Talindrians are considered one of the oldest subgroups. They are skilled in gem crafting due to the availability of gemstones on their island.
  • Melqarri - Found on the Melqara Isles, the Melqarri are renowned for their navigation skills and are considered some of the best sailors among the Ardetian people.
  • Qa’harans - The Qa’harans reside on the islands in the western region and are known for their martial culture and warrior traditions. They have historically acted as defenders of the archipelago.
  • Zanavean - This subgroup primarily inhabits the smaller, southern islands and is known for their agricultural innovations and their deeply spiritual connection to the land.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Ardetian people speak a variety of languages and dialects that are collectively known as Ardetian languages. These languages share common roots, with variations and unique elements among the subgroups. The written script is often similar, with ancient pictographic elements. The term “Ardetian” comes from the ancient word “Ardet” meaning ‘island’ in Old Ardetian. Individual subgroups have their names, such as “Talindri” for the Talindrians, which means ‘gem of the sea’.  The term “Ardetian” is used to describe the entire ethnic group living in the Ardetian Islands. It has been adopted by the people themselves, though they also identify strongly with their sub-ethnicities. To outsiders, the term may sometimes be used broadly without recognizing the rich diversity within the Ardetian people.

Culture and cultural heritage

Ardetian culture is rich and varied, with a strong emphasis on seafaring, nature, and community. Music and dance play a significant role in their culture, and their art often depicts sea creatures and natural elements. Each subgroup has its unique cultural heritage, but there are shared cultural traits such as the celebration of the Sea Festival, which is a grand event celebrated by all Ardetians to honor the sea and its bounty.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Ardetians have a polytheistic belief system, worshiping a pantheon of gods and spirits associated with nature and the sea. The Sea Mother and the Storm Father are two of the principal deities. Ancestor veneration is also widespread. Rituals, ceremonies, and festivals are essential aspects of Ardetian life.

Coming of Age Rites

The Rite of the Waves is a coming-of-age ceremony where young individuals must sail in a small boat to prove their skills in navigation and seafaring.
