Berstock Trees
Only growing on the Western Peninsula, Berstock trees are enormous trees which dominate the forests in which they reside. They are not known to grow anywhere else in the world.
In 1748 King Gredan Sampala discovered by accident while pursuing a lizardman raiding party, that the trees were extremely sturdy and difficult to break the bark of. Owing to the inhospitability of the Western Peninsula the humans who resided there rarely ventured much further than their home on Warres, and so the trees had never been noticed. He managed to prize some bark from the tree, and used it as a shield in the final fight with the party they were pursuing, and much to his surprise despite significant blows directly to it - it never broke. When ground by specialised machines, he discovered bark could be added to armour to vastly improve it's strudiness without significantly improving its weight. In his studies, he also noted that the sap of the trees when consumed could make the user much more intelligent. It could also be used in powerful healing potions and medicines.
King Gredan began aggressively pursuing the mining of these trees, which was no easy task given the sturdiness of their trunks, not to mention their location deep in the forests. To aid in finding these, he also established the 'satellite cities', which would be primarily responsible for the mining efforts. The trees are named after a close friend of King Gredan's, Ulfer Berstock, who died fighting the lizardmen in the mission in which the trees were discovered.
