Jubilat Chase

King/Ruler Jubilat Chase (a.k.a. the Bard)

"Sweet Alirach from the Ender clan/I beg this be the Aether's plan/We'd be together for life, she'd be my wife/And I'd know that I'm Alirach's man." -- One of Jubilat's self-composed tunes on the lute, a song he wrote for his wife Alirach

Physical Description

Body Features

Jubilat was mostly human-passing as an Enderborn, and they lacked the ability to teleport like their predecessors and some of their descendants. Their most notable Ender traits were their indigo eyes and "mane" of fur. They had a small covering of fur across their shoulder blades and the back of their neck. Jubilat kept the visible parts of their mane shaved down to the root.

Personal history

The third generation of the Chase dynasty, Jubilat Chase was born to Lucretia and Thorin Chase in the early Netherite Age. From the beginning, records have described them as mild-mannered and shy. In Lucretia's diary, she recounts several instances of Jubilat refusing to attend state events and how they would cry when introduced to strangers. A string of royal tutors instructed them, and they took music lessons, starting in their youth. They first learned how to sing, and then moved on to the lute and wood flute. Jubilat's musical talent earned them the nickname, "The Bard King of Treehold." It was this music that calmed Jubilat’s shyness, especially when they sang at the funeral of Peter Chase (much to their grief). Their playing eventually drew the attention of Ailrach, a member of the Treehold Haunting, who eventually became Jubilat’s childhood sweetheart (and later their Queen.) Her presence by Jubilat’s side proved to be a calming one, especially when their mother Lucretia crowned them near the end of her life.
Initially, Jubilat was not keen on marriage, fearing that they would be an insufficient spouse. Alirach was intent on marrying them, though, and promised to support them. So she proposed to Jubilat, they agreed, and arranged an autumn wedding. It was a quiet affair as per Jubilat's preferences.
During the course of their reign, Jubilat showed a strong preference towards holding court outside in the courtyard should the weather permit it. While they never explained why, some had a theory that they felt insufficient to rule from the same place their grandfather did. There was a marked preference toward the arts over the course of their time.
Jubilat's first child, Hailith, was born when they were 22. They absolutely adored their baby daughter and promised that even if they were a bad king, they'd be a fantastic parent. A year later, Alirach gave birth to their second child, Gerabrynn. Jubilat made sure to hire the best tutors possible for their daughter and son, regardless of the cost. Some people have claimed that Jubilat favoured Hailith over Gerabrynn (and Gerabrynn himself may have believed this), but there is no way to know for certain. They did name her Crown Princess when she was 18, because she was the firstborn.
The Bard King of Treehold stunned the world by stepping down from the throne. They did so at age 54, following a difficult year of bad weather and political unrest. Even earlier than that, Jubilant confessed to their family that they felt tired, depressed, and anxious. Citing the stresses thrust upon them that year, coupled with their age and declining mental health, Jubilat held a small ceremony where they stepped off the throne and gave the Treehold crown to their daughter, naming her the new Queen. They also said that from then on, they would sit in a peaceful garden and play music to the birds, in hopes that it would "bring back to life that which has died inside."
After abdicating, Jubilant was treated at home for their declining mental health. They suffered several depressive episodes and sometimes refused to speak to others for days at a time. Their family looked after them as their primary caregivers, while royal physicians attempted to give them therapy and treatment.
Unfortunately, one of Jubilat's main physicians had a belief that their problems were caused by a humoral imbalance and constantly did blood-letting on them. As a result, Jubilant suffered from iron deficiency and became very uncoordinated and anemic in their last few years. One morning when they were 72, they got up and went to wash their face, only to suffer an episode of dizziness, clouded vision, and an inability to stand up straight. During the blackout, Jubilat fell into their porcelain washbasin, which broke and pierced their neck with a ceramic shard. Their servants heard the crash and rushed to the scene, but by the time they arrived, the already-anemic Jubilat had bled out too much for there to be a hope of saving them. There was just enough time for Hailith to arrive and say her goodbyes.
Hailith arranged the funeral for her parent, ordering that they should lay in state for four days, then had them buried in the family crypt. Years later, Richard Chase I (Jubilat's great-grandson) would have the Jubilat Hospital built in their memory.
