Great Oneximásin Revolt

May the west be free of your barbarity.
— Quote attributed to the assassin of President Ffoshuám
The Great Oneximásin Revolt was a failed uprising in the country of Muhepásin in the year 6 Return. Started by insurgents in the western territory of "Oneximásin", the year-long "war" resulted in many deaths on both sides, notably that of the President of Muhepásin.

History

Context

For many eras, the western territories of Muhepásin have been somewhat separated from the eastern coastal holdings due to the strangeness of the southern border and the difficult terrain of the Iron. This has inevitably led to their culture being quite distinct from the coast, and to conflict with the country's leaders, who almost always hail from the east.   In the year 4 Return, Ttilájo Ffoshuám was elected President of the republic, with Owenyeri ses Hángemil as her Vice-President. Her victory in the election sparked great concern in the west, as she had an extensive track-record of poor policy and regard for the western territories and its inhabitants. Ses Hángemil, however, was considered far more suitable due to having grown up in the west and having worked with many of its larger community organisations.   While some thought the community's concerns were overblown, President Ffoshuám proved them correct with the many policies she enforced through her position. Ses Hángemil's influence, if any, was hardly felt. In 6 Return, the so-called "Oneximásin Independence Front" came to the conclusion that she had to be stopped from passing any further laws relating to the west, and that now was the time to seize control of either the entire country, or the west as an independent state.

War

In the month of Mercy, members of the OIF travelled to the capital city of Urisemippe, and spread out through the crowd of an event which Ffoshuám was attending. When she rose to the central platform to speak to those assembled, one of them charged from the crowd and tackled her from the stage with a knife. When the crowd tried to pry him away, the other OIF members held them back, before helping the assassin slip away. None of them were captured in the event, and Ffoshuám was left fatally injured.   When she died a few hours later, ses Hángemil automatically became president. Rather than siding with the OIF, as they had perhaps expected, she was furious. Security in Urisemippe was increased tenfold immediately, and orders were made for an excursion to the western territories to track down the assassins.   This force was met by an OIF ambush shortly after their arrival, with 4 Muhepásines soldiers being killed. With this act, the revolt had well and truly begun.

Year of Battle

The following months saw the west descend into open revolt against the republic, led by OIF Commander Nyirán. When a second group of Muhepásin troops were repelled near the narrowest point of the border, Nyirán took the opportunity to declare the west as the Republic of Oneximásin, and completely free of the east's authority.   This swiftly became untrue, as the full force of the Muhepásines military was launched and easily pierced through the shabby barriers the OIF had erected. Town after town came to heel, but the assassins of President Ffoshuám remained at large, and even the compliant citizens refused to give them up.   To track them down, the Muhepásines Presidential Guard was formed later in the year, a specialised unit outside of the main military. This group scoured much of the mountainous east, and eventually captured Commander Nyirán in the course of their investigation, identifying him as mastermind behind the assassination. Though his capture hampered Oneximásin's cause, Commander ses Ujinám quickly assumed control and tried to continue the fight in his stead.   Despite ses Ujinám's best efforts, including the successful retaking of the town of Shehemiru, the great revolt had begun to peter out. Many westerners, tired of the many casualties the civilian populace had suffered, turned on the OIF and forced ses Ujinám to flee south to Ngáxom for their own safety. Scattered members of the OIF carried on for a few months after, but by the month of Experience in 7 Return, the last of these groups had secured their freedom by turning in the president's assassin, and the fighting was over.

Aftermath

With the final surrender of the OIF, the great revolt was over. President ses Hángemil saw to it that those captured were sufficiently punished, as well as those among the civilian populace who had supported them. However, recognising that such acts would likely serve to inspire a second uprising in the future, she made attempts to reach out to those in Oneximásin and find ways to 'integrate' them more with the coastal territories.   Not every fighter for Oneximásin took this lying down. Though now in exile in Ngáxom, ses Ujinám blasted the proposed changes as further victories for east Muhepásin and destructive to Oneximásin's unique character, and warned that the great revolt would not be the last they saw of them. While this did not come to pass, as ses Ujinám died in the year 28 Return, some fear the OIF may act again.

Autonomy

While the Oneximásin Independence Front was naturally fighting for total independence from Muhepásin, not all in the region shared their view. For some, their ultimate goal was simply more autonomy within Muhepásin, gaining greater freedom to express their culture and more influence over how the country as a whole was run.   This difference in objective is considered by some to be the reason the OIF's Great Revolt fell apart after the capture of Commander Nyirán, as his successor failed to keep both sides working together.

Fates

After his capture by Muhepásin, Nyirán vanished from the historical record. To most, its obvious that he was killed as soon as he was taken into custody, or possibly even killed while in Oneximásin, and merely passed off as captured in an attempt to gain leverage over the OIF. While a handful of journalists have attempted to investigate further, they have been stymied at every turn.   Ses Ujinám, meanwhile, is extremely well documented. Despite their exile in Ngáxom they remained heavily involved in OIF affairs, attempting to garner support to repeat revolutions well into their old age. Unlike Nyirán's likely violent death, ses Ujinám's was mundane and peaceful, dying in their sleep in 28 Return after a lengthy illness.
