Giff

The Giff are a large-bodied group of humanoids who resemble humanoid hippopotami. Although secretive about their land of origins, they arrived, along with a large contingent of Loxodon folk many years ago in Dojhan. While the peaceful Loxodons found interest in the philosophies and contemplation of many of the Dojhani Monks, the more militant Giff found fascination in the Dojhani invention of Lunglei, a black explosive powder commonly translated as Dragonthunder.
The eastern Giff eventually sailed back northwest a ways, forming their own society on the island of Valkorich. Their experiments with Lunglei have yielded the finest cannons, blunderbusses, and flintlock pistols on Tol, weapons they wield with glee, despite a propensity for causing havoc and explosions.
Luckily, although their military might is great, the Giff have no interest in conquest and little ambition, beyond the acquisition of personal glory. As a result many of them hire themselves out as mercenaries, seeking fortune and glory all over the world.
