Dream Quest
The Dream Quest begins when a powerful sorcerer king is contacted by Neb-Neter-U, this can be done by him personally or, most likely, through an agent. Those ambitious enough that have learned of the City of the Dead might wish to entice Neb-Neter-U in hopes that he will extend an invitation, this is not out of the realm of possibility, though significant offering of power or knowledge is required – contacting an agent of the Sorcerer God is not hard, the retrievers are many across the realm.
In order to receive an invitation, an ambitious wizard needs to fulfill a series of requirements:
They must be archmages of at least one tradition, or have created one themselves.
They must have started their path to the Throne and at least gazed onto the Gate.
They must be working for themselves and must be willing to let everything go in their path to ascension.
If these prerequisites are attained and the invitation is accepted, they must then prepare for their journey. It is at this moment that a lot of petitioners might wish to dispose of their Ka or take time to learn more about Duat. There is no limit to the extent of these preparations, the use of high magic, personal armies or powerful artifacts are all allowed.
They must then travel to the northernmost beach of The Infinite Corridor, where a great oasis used to meet the dangerous sea. Therein lays a black iron Obelisk with an inscription only those versed in the psionic language of theurgy are able to read:
“You are not here for life eternal; you are here to be forgotten. Each step through these endless sands will be purgatory, the heat will burn away desire, the winds will flay away weakness. If you survive the City of the Dead will be waiting for you, at the edge of darkness.
You are not doing this because you want power, you are doing this because you are powerful and want to use your power to protect the world. Not from atop a throne, but from the darkness’ depths.
Here lays a powerful sorcerer, unbidden by morality, guided only by logic. May their name be remembered only in song.”
The first step onto the sands marks the point of no return. From the moment the sea becomes distant the god of sorcery will be watching. The pilgrim, and whomever they bring as their retinue, will then be assaulted by the countless threats The Infinite Corridor is known for. This part of the journey is by far the most dangerous, on foot, it is a several day long journey into the shifting sands, with little to no rest.
If a well-prepared petitioner manages to succeed, Duat will greet them. The doors will open and Neb-Neter-U will personally greet them, with a tranquil voice and a cutting tone he will invite them within for the next part of the Dream Quest. This will also likely be the moment the pilgrim will meet the other Tomb Kings, casual conversation with Duat's denizens will not be allowed, however.
Neb-Neter-U will then guide them towards his Black Spire, inviting them in. This is where the Ma’at takes place.
The petitioner will lose their Akh, and with it, any mortal bounds that still remained within the petitioner. Now with a mind absent feelings, wants and allegiances other than towards Tolaris, they’ll be released into Duat as a fully inducted Tomb King.
They’ll be allowed to all of Duat's secrets therefore, absent bounds.
