Marid (ma-RIDZ)
Marids are powerful genies native to the Elemental Plane of Water.
Marid households on the Elemental Plane of Water typically have two to twenty members, led by a marid with a title. These strongholds are usually anchored to a solid mass and staffed by servants and slaves. Marids enjoy using air-breathing servants because they can control their compliance through their gift of water-breathing.
Marids often visit the Material Plane for adventure. They enjoy embellishing things and are creative storytellers, but may become wrathful if interrupted. Marid society is not focused on production, gathering what they need from the sea and offering gifts of coral or pearls to foreigners. Those who deal with marids may find bribery and flattery to be effective, but this does not guarantee a favorable outcome.
When in the Elemental Plane of Water or in seas or oceans, marids prefer to go bare or wear scant clothing. On land, they opt for colorful flowing robes or large pantaloons and sometimes wear clothing made from finely woven seaweed decorated with coral or pearls. Both males and females enjoy showcasing their impressive physiques, often wearing flimsy vests to cover their torsos. Regardless of the style, their clothing is designed to never impede their swimming.
Marids enjoy hunting in the oceans for sport and are known to collect wealth in various forms, including pearls and other treasures from the ocean floor. Some may even kidnap skilled Human or demihuman craftsmen to work on their homes or create artistic creations, though this violates marid law. More malicious marids may intentionally capsize vessels on the Material Plane and drown sailors.
Marids view all other races, including other genies, as inferiors and only tolerate humans. However, they may treat human visitors to the Plane of Water favorably. Despite being the most powerful of all genies, they do not typically rally under a single leader, which limits their effectiveness in wars against evil creatures on the Plane of Water.
Marids possess immense physical strength, capable of stopping a ship as long as 110 feet in length. They are also highly magical creatures, with spellcasting abilities rivaling those of archwizards. They can use spell-like abilities such as create water, detect evil or good, detect invisiblility, detect magic, invisibility, polymorph self, purify water, and create a wall of fog.
Once a year, they can alter reality as a gift to non-genies.
Water-based Magic is useless against a marid, and some scholars believe they are partially resistant to cold-based spells. While others believe they are vulnerable to fire-based magic, others argue that marids are strongly resistant to magic of any kind, and that a marid's touch can extinguish any flame.
Culture
Marids are free-spirited creatures with a strong sense of individualism, and as a result, there is no true "marid empire." Marids on the Plane of Water reside in mostly independent stronghold communities. Every marid considers themselves noble and claims a variety of titles such as "atabeg," "mufti," or "shah." However, these titles are not officially recognized by true noble marids.Marid households on the Elemental Plane of Water typically have two to twenty members, led by a marid with a title. They don't need to eat or drink to survive, but some do so for pleasure. Marids are fiercely independent and proud individuals who believe that each one deserves to be the leader.
