Session 101: Leaving Gundarlun Report

General Summary

Session 101 – Wednesday March 9, 2022 – Leaving Gundarlun

5 Hour role playing/ battle session 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM

It is the 8th day of the month of Nightal (The Drawing Down) in the 3rd year of the Age of Enialis

Goals:

Gather the other parts of the god Destroyer sword (Blade, Hilt and guard)
Destroy the Amber Sarcophagi with the god Destroyer sword
Take the sword to the Summer Queen and have her destroy it.
Get dragon egg for Lady Cersei.

Bringing Nikabrik to Crow

Jaquette told the party she couldn’t recast Wind walk. They decided to shove Nikabrik into a bag of holding and then Wind walked for 9 minutes and then let him breathe and repeated the task until they were just outside the port. They took Nikabrik out of the bag and escorted him (manacled) into the Palace.

As they approached Shniska’s room they ran into their old friend Doc. Doc explained he obtained his medical degree and has spent some time on this island helping people. He told them that Shniska hasn’t allowed him to leave the island. The party told him that Shniska is dead, and they have a new opening for a crew member.

They went into Shniska’s room and found that there were several people. They saw that Shniska was still in the chair and that Bane and Killgrave were both in the room along with Crow and several other guards. Bane asked Doc to examine the body and Doc confirmed that Shniska was killed by a crossbow bolt that had black fletching. Rolen tried to intimidate Nikabrik to tell the truth. Killgrave spoke up and asked that his guards take Nikabrik to aback room to interrogate him. The Order of heroes wanted to go along but Killgrave made it clear that they are foreigners and not welcome. Lucky pleaded with Crow to step in, and Crow called out for mediation. Crow let Nikabrik go with Killgrave’s “interrogators” while the priestess was summoned.

The Priestess Tonnuna.

A most beautiful human woman, the Priestess Tonnuna , came in escorted by 4 servants. Straight faced and unemotional she circled the room and then demanded to know, “Why was I summoned.” Killgrave pointed out that Shniska was killed and that the Order of Heroes are either directly or indirectly responsible. Rolen spoke up defending the OoH, claiming that Killgrave hired Nikabrik to assassinate Shniska so that he could become king.

The Priestess Tonnuna asked to hear from the accused Nikabrik. Killgrave’s guard came in and told Killgrave that Nikabrik was apparently mortally wounded by the OoH and just passed away before they could interrogate him. Rolen started to speak out again but Tonnuna demanded “Silence!” Tonnuna requested that Doc examine the body of Nikabrik. Doc confirmed that Nikabrik died from a previous wound that had been ruptured. Tonnuna replied “Umberlee will decide! There will be a fight to the death!”

Trial by combat.

Crow and Bane stepped forward to fight. Lucky provided some bardic inspiration and very stealthily cast death ward on Crow. Crow laid in and hit with 2 of his 3 scimitar attacks as the crowd cheered. Bane struck Crow 2 of his 3 hits but Anna and Lucky both used their abilities to reduce the damage. Crow and bane both hit twice more, and Crow seemed to be taking the worst of it. Lucky, hiding behind Rolen, subtly cast Slow on Bane. Crow hit twice and Bane, slowly was only able to hit once. Killgrave noticed something was wrong. Crow sliced him with 3 hits (one critical) and Anna reduced the damage a little to try to make it seem fairer. Bane only hit once and Killgrave tried to stop the battle, telling Tonnuna “They’re cheating and using magic.” The Priestess replied, “I see no cheating, Umberlee will decide.” After 2 more rounds, Crow decimated Bane. Killgrave was visibly irate, but Tonnuna was unmoved. Tonnuna said “Umberlee has spoken, the Order of Heroes is NOT guilty. Justice is served.”

Crow spoke out. “Justice is not done. Killgrave is the one who killed Shniska. He cannot be the new king.” Lucky tried to speak to Tonnuna, but she told him “Silence!” Tonnuna announced, “Umberlee will decide!” Crow challenged Killgrave directly. Doc was able to heal Crow a bit but and Lucky was able to stealthily heal him, but the rest of the party was unable do anything. The 2nd fight immediately began. Rolen and Anna focused on Killgrave to be sure he wasn’t casting any spells. Crow hit with 3 scimitar attacks and Killgrave hit twice with his short sword. Crow hit 3 more times and Killgrave made a critical hit with his sneak attack. The crowd went wild! Crow hit 3 more times and killed Killgrave. Solemnly, Tonnuna announced, “The great Umberlee has decided, and Crow will decide who the next king shall be.”

Tonnuna hears from Umberlee

Tonnuna’s eyes widened as she heard a voice in her head for the first time in many years. She looked at the OoH. She walked over to them and asked, “You are leaving?” The Order of Heroes said “Yes.” She said, “I will be joining you.” Rolen asked, “Why?” Tonnuna replied, “Umberlee has spoken to me, and I will be joining you.” Rolen went to Crow and asked about Shniska’s promise of 100 ships. Crow looked suspiciously at the OoH, suspecting them of cheating in the fight. Rolen persuaded Crow that perhaps it was Umberlee who helped. Crow asked Tonnuna if Umberlee said anything else to her. She told him that she told her that she needs to urgently leave with the OoH. Doc spoke up and said, “Me too!”

Crow spoke to the crowd. “Until the next king is declared, I shall rule until the tribal leaders fight. As thanks to the Order of Heroes, who proved that Killgrave was a murderous traitor who killed our honorable Shniska, we shall provide them 50 ships to help them kill the evil pirate Hitch!” The crowd erupted and volunteers came forward. Crow shouted out, “You will leave at dawn!” The party went to the ship along with Doc and Tonnuna where they were all briefed on the current mission and spent the night.

Journey to the Purple Rocks

The party rose at dawn. Tonnuna found Anna and explained to her that she has information that the order of Heroes needs to know. She told Anna that Umberlee gave her a vision that there will be a storm and when it happens, she would be able to guide the ship to their destination. Tonnuna found Jaquette and explained to her the situation. Jaquette started thinking about her control weather spell. Tonnuna also told Rolen that she will know where to go in the storm and she’ll know that when they’re there, their goal will be 50 fathoms below.

The first day was relatively uneventful as the party slept, talked, and prepared spells. Late the second day they saw a large storm in the distance. Rolen considered going around it to the purple rocks, but Tonnuna told him to go into it. Many of the ships in the armada warned of the storm but Tonnuna told them “Umberlee is with us.” Jaquette cast control weather to try and quell the storm. Anna saw a purple hue in the distance and knew they were getting close to the Purple Rocks.

Into the storm

The storm was intense. Tonnuna told the captain to stay the course. Jaquette realized that her control weather would take too long. Tonnuna told the captain to stay above water as she tried hard to focus on where they were. Jaquette saw sharks in the water attack one of her friendly dolphins. One of the longboats was hit awkwardly by a huge wave and was destroyed. Capt. Pryor signaled to the Charon, “This is a Kraken storm, we’re heading back!” A few of the other ships followed the Crazy Suzan. Anna cast water breathing on the officers and a few of the important crew.

One of the long boats pulled up next to the Charon with the barbarian sailors yelling at the storm and egging on the Charon. One of them shouted out “We’re going to beat this storm!” As he finished his yell a massive tentacle reached out of the water and smashed the longboat!

The Kraken starts to destroy the fleet.

Lucky watched the kraken fling a couple people from the long boats and smash another. Lucky jumped in the water, cast firebolt and then climbed back on the ship. Al cast firebolt also but they learned that fire doesn’t do as much damage as they thought it would. Rolen “Gnomed” the kraken so that it would have difficulty hitting the Charon. Tonnuna threw her magical trident and hit the kraken once. Doc drank a potion and transformed himself to look exactly like lucky and gained 12 temp HP. The kraken continued smashing ships and destroyed 2 more. Jaquette saw the people in the water and sharks attacking them, she conjured a giant eagle to help save the people. The Eagle swooped down and saved a barbarian who was missing a leg.

Continuing to attack the Kraken, Lucky and Al fired their fire bolts. Lucky ordered the harpoon to fire, but it missed. Tonnuna hit the kraken tentacles twice with her trident (named Rebecca.) Doc cast see invisibility on himself. Rolen watched the kraken smash and destroy a couple more ships and noticed that the men in the other ships were very frightened. Anna pulled her hood up and looked for Hitch’s ship, but she didn’t see it. Jaquette put a tourniquet on the leg of the man that her eagle rescued. Tonnuna smelled the scent from her vision and recognized that they were where they needed to be, and yelled to Captain Rolen, “We’re here.” Rolen yelled out, “Full stop.” Stinky Pete released the sea anchor, and the crew quickly doused the sails. The officers yelled “Brace for impact” as the ship spun around the sea anchor.

Into the deep

Lucky and Al waited for Rolen and then jumped into the water. Rolen swam up to one of the Kraken tentacles, stabbed it, marked it and the tentacle in turn smacked Rolen and grappled him. Tonnuna jumped into the water and swam 60 feet down. She saw a swarm of Quippers and hit them with her trident 3 times. The Quippers swarmed around Tonnuna but couldn’t pierce her armor. Doc hasted himself and jumped into the water and instantly swam 240 feet down. One of the Giant sharks started chasing Doc, but Doc was much faster.

The kraken bit and then swallowed Rolen. A Shark swam up to Lucky and bit him. Anna dove in casting mirror image on herself, swam down 40 feet to the kraken and began blade singing. Jaquette swam down 60 ft. The Giant eagle saved another sailor. A water elemental tried to hit Jaquette but missed. Lucky swam down 40ft towards the kraken and cast ray of enfeeblement against the Kraken and swam another 20 feet down. All cast polymorph on himself turning into a Giant Shark/Obliteros and swam 50 feet down. The kraken smacked Al the Obliteros with his tentacle.

A massive Devil Shark bit into Tonnuna, grappling her. Rolen held onto Bookmark and cast dimension door and instantly traveled to 300 feet below to the entrance of the Kraken’s lair. He then swam into the lair. Tonnuna hit the Devil shark 3 times with her trident, and realized the creature is very beefy. She tried to get out of the grapple but failed. Doc continued to swim down casting fairy fire at the entrance of the lair but not seeing any creatures. Seeing Rolen’s glowing knife, Doc caught up with him in the lair. The Kraken feebly attacked Jaquette with his legendary action and grappled her. The Kraken ended the enfeeblement. Anna swam directly towards the Kraken and punched it once. The Kraken smacked at Anna but hit one of her duplicates.

The party is split again

Jaquette (as a giant octopus) struggled in the grasp of the Kraken but failed to get out or even hit the Kraken. Jaquette’s eagle pulled another body from the water and dropped it onto the deck of the Charon but the sailor was already dead. A Water Elemental attacked Lucky. Lucky cast enfeeblement on the Kraken again and grabbed ahold of Al and the two went 100’ down. The Devil shark continued to chew on Tonnuna.

Rolen looked around in the massive lair and saw large chunks of broken ships, and piles of treasure within an ancient ruin. Rolen also spotted 3 giant sharks protecting the area along with 2 water elementals. Rolen swam away from the creatures and cast his blade of disaster, hurting one of the giant sharks and badly wounding another. Meanwhile, Tonnuna broke free of the grapple and stabbed the Kraken with her trident. The Kraken, in return, smacked Tonnuna and grappled her. Back in the Lair, Doc splashed some acid on the badly wounded shark and killed it. He fired his crossbow at the 2nd shark and killed it also.

260 feet above its lair, the Kraken squeezed Jaquette, then it released her and Tonnuna and teleported directly into its lair to deal with Doc and Rolen. Anna tried to cast counter spell to stop it, but Teleportation was a higher level and Anna failed the ability check. Frustrated, Anna swam up to the ship and had the crew drop the bomb that Tyrena had created, into the sea, directly over the kraken lair. The bomb sank down slowly as Anna dashed 185 feet down towards the lair. Jaquette to dashed but only 120 ft down.
