Session 108: The Sword Report

General Summary

Session 108 – Wednesday May the 11th, 2022 – The Sword

4 Hour battle session 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM

Goals:

Gather the other parts of the god Destroyer sword (Blade, Hilt and guard)
Destroy the Amber Sarcophagi with the god Destroyer sword
Take the sword to the Summer Queen and have her destroy it.
Get dragon egg for Lady Cersei.

Searching the lair begins.

As Fredrik ran out of the temple to join the battle, Tyrena came in to aid the Order of Heroes. She found them in the lower level going into a door on the Eastern wall. They found a large lab/research room. Lucky grabbed all the books and put them into a bag of holding without taking the time to really examine their titles. He did notice that most seemed to be encyclopedias of Necromancy. Anna looked for a phylactery but found nothing that would suit Ducia. Tyrena searched the desk and found Lucky’s pipe. Tyrena also found a couple of journals. One of the journals had details on the Order of Heroes, their habits and lots of detail on Lucky specifically. The Journal even contained a sketch of Lucky sleeping naked. The other Journal had similar details on the Summer Queen.

Rolen searched the chest and found a hoard of reagents and material components for most known spells. Lucky examined the potions that were brewing on a table. He spent some time fiddling with them produced 10 completed potions with varying degrees of healing ability. Anna opened a door in the Northeast wall and walked into a dark room. Lucky consumed one of the potions and handed out a few to the others. Rolen consumed one and sat down to rest. Lucky gave Tyrena a potion and Jaquette and they consumed them. They shared what they had learned and then heard a scream from the dark room where Anna had gone.

A room of evil creatures

Anna, was able to spot an unlit brazier in the dark room and walked towards it to light it. As she approached it, she was grappled by a large hideous creature. The creature pierced Anna with its large Bony Claws. Anna started punching the creature and with her green flame blade lit the brazier on fire. Lucky peered through the open door and saw Anna and hit the Boneclaw with his Eldritch Blast. The creature walked into the shadow and teleported to the back of the room. Anna cast protection of Evil and good on herself and then took a 2nd wind. Jaquette turned into a bat and flew into the room. She was able to see Anna in the hands of a Boneclaw, a Dark curtain in the middle of the room and a dark shadow creature.

Tyrena walked into the room saw darkness and threw one of her flashbangs into the room. The Boneclaw was the only one able to avoid the blast and the other 3 creatures (including a wraith and a Bodak) became deaf and blind. Rolen walked into the room and cast cone of cold with his rod of absorption. Anna broke free of the grapple, disengaged, and moved back towards the door. The Boneclaw moved towards the party and slashed at Tyrena and Rolen and grappled them. Rolen used his hellish rebuke and destroyed the creature.

Lucky, with his crown of stars walked into the room illuminating it for all to see. Lucky shot at the Allip with his eldritch blast and destroyed it. He then shot a star at the wraith. The Bodak stared at Tyrena and she felt the necrotic magic suck part of her life away. Tyrena shot the Bodak twice with her rifle and destroyed it. Jaquette cast polymorph onto the wraith and turned it into a chicken.

What was in the dark room?

Anna suggested they throw the chicken into the curtain. Rolen opened the curtain and saw a quick image of his own death and then it quickly faded into a pitch-black void. Tyrena picked up the chicken and threw it into the void. A Clump of feathers from its wing tip fell to the floor where there was a small area of dried blood. Anna tried to open the chest with Lucky’s key, but it didn’t work. Jaquette picked the lock on the chest and opened it. Inside the chest they found a large ancient tomb where the cover seemed to be made of human flesh. Lucky touched his helm of comprehend languages and read the cover. He saw that it was a tomb on the “Plane of Annihilation.” Next to it in the chest were candles, chalk and a used sacrificial knife. Flipping through the pages of the book, he learned that its creation required the sacrifice of many creatures. In addition, it could be moved by sacrificing more creatures.

Rolen prodded the void with a sword and like a sphere of annihilation, whatever went in, was destroyed. Anna determined that neither the book nor the curtain would be an appropriate phylactery for Ducia. Rolen took a head from his bag and threw it in, a piece of hair fell to the floor. Rolen contemplated somehow putting the Amber Sarcophagi into the void. Tyrena started feeling along the wall and came across what could be a secret door.

Jaquette walked over and saw a small indentation about where a keyhole would be, but it was filled with dust. Rolen bent over and blew into the keyhole, blowing dust into his eyes. The dust was Malice, and he was blinded. Jaquette used her bead of lesser restoration to heal him. Jaquette then picked the lock and opened the door. Anna walked back the other direction as the rest of the party walked into the room. In the room they saw a stone statue of a human knight, a sealed barrel, a skull with two jewels set into its eye sockets (50,000 gp rubies) and six pointed (marquis cut) diamonds set as teeth in the jaw (each diamond is worth 5,000 gp), an ink well, a scarecrow, a small pedestal with a black stone on it, a bejeweled sword stuck into the ground, a steel anvil, a glowing yellow and a glowing orange gem of unknown type, a blue teapot, a blue shield, a red crystal sphere, a blue vase, 3 unlit braziers and a table protected by some sort of glass hemisphere. Rolen looked at the skull and said “Oh no” as the skulls eyes glowed and the demilich let out a howl.

Tyrena fell to the floor unconscious. The Demilich drained life from Jaquette and Rolen. Jaquette knelt next to Tyrena and cast Heal on her. The Demilich drained energy from Rolen and Tyrena. Lucky shot the Demilich with his eldritch blast and one of his stars. His wild magic granted Lucky back his 9th level spell. The black stone turned into a flame skull who looked like Nickolas Cage. The Flame skull started casting fireball, but Rolen cast counter spell. Rolen smited the Demilich and destroyed it. Tyrena pulled up her rifle and took two shots at it, massively wounding it. Jaquette put a stone in her sling and let it fly directly into the flameskull destroying it.

The sword, phylacteries and other rooms

They found the hilt and the guard of the god Destroyer sword on a table in the room. Protecting them was a glass like shield that looked like that of an elder brain’s shield. Rolen accessed his demi-plane where they had stored the Neolithid acid. He took a wine flask they made from the Neolithid’s stomach and was able to pour the acid over the glass shield. It took more than they expected, and it took longer but eventually the shield started to dissolve and Rolen was able to collect the pieces. Anna took the phylacteries one by one and threw them into the plane of annihilation. Every time one piece fell onto the ground, but with persistence she was able to put everything into the void.

They found Ducia’s bedroom. Rolen took a comfy chair. Lucky took the journals titled: “How to kill a god”, “How to kill and arch fey”, “How to bring back a god from the dead and control them” plus detailed information on the god destroyer sword. Anna found 6 tubes of universal solvent. They went into the wizards’ quarters. Anna found 2 healing potions. They found a handful of gold and 4 full sets of Red Wizard garments (including underwear.)

The end of the battle

The party exited the ancient temple and saw the battle nearing its conclusion with the OoH friends victorious. The Order of Heroes picked off the last few wizards that were still fighting. They saw that several dwarves, Alhoon and drow were dead. They also saw that the Tiefling Vampire, Alric, was dead alongside his Night Walker Freddy. They found Zyark, bare chested, with an arrow sticking out of his shoulder. Zyark walked over to them and offered to enhance their arrangement. He offered them a location just outside of Gauntlgrym where the dwarves would build for them their own Keep. In addition, he’d double their stake in the mines to 30%. In return he asked for protection and that they would put “Located at Gauntlgrym” on the bottom of their posters.

They talked to Cersei and Eustace. Rolen informed Cersei that they have dragon eggs for her. Cersei looked up to the dead White dragon hanging over a cliff above. Anna said, “That can be harvested!” and was off. They gave Cersei 2 white dragon eggs and Eustace put them in his portable whole. Cersei offered her home for them to stay if they ever need a place. She also asked if they would visit the orphanage. She asked them also to return the piece of the sword once it is found. The party joined Zyark as the Alhoons opened a portal to Gauntlgrym.

In Gauntlgrym

Back at Gauntlgrym the OoH enjoyed some food, and Jaquette helped heal the wounded Dwarves. They discussed their plans. They knew that an Empyrean would be after the sword once it was restored. Tyrena explained to the party that Empyreans are very powerful Celestials. Lucky cast commune and talked to his patron wondering if the Empyrean would attack immediately. The response was “maybe.” Lucky also learned that the god sending the Empyrean is a good aligned god. They started discussing their tactics to deal with the Empyrean once it appears and Lucky wished Al back into existence. The party then got some rest.

In the morning Jaquette made the party a hero’s feast (with scrapple, a dandelion salad, and some banana nut muffins.) They found Zyark and asked if there was a large cavern where they could work for a bit. Zyark pointed them to a large cavern. They found the cavern and assembled the sword with sovereign glue. They then hung out waiting for the Empyrean to show up. Rolen attuned to the sword.

After a few hours Zyark found the party and asked them if they’re available to look at the place the dwarves have surveyed for the OoH Gauntlgrym keep. The party agreed and they went up with the dwarves. The location on the side of the mountain was beautiful. They had access to roads going to Neverwinter. Jaquette asked for a skylight so they could grow some plants. The dwarves started discussing what they could do and then the sky darkened. A voice began echoing from high above.

Empyreans are pretty powerful

The voice from above stated:

“Hear this o' wielder of the blade. I am Teal Maw, the Reinforcer. Roshan the Ravenger has been summoned. For the great Moradin, the Soul Forger, The Creator, the Dwarffather has once destroyed the blade you wield and has sent us forth to retrieve it. Lay it down, step away and Roshan the Ravager shall not kill you.”

They saw a large Teal Planetar with its white wings extended as it soared about 500 feet over head. Above it was a huge creature wielding a massive Maul. Rolen told the dwarves, “It’s time to run!”

Lucky climbed down the cliff and laid down a +2 great sword saying “Sorry, here.” The Empyrean (from 600 feet away) hit lucky with a Lightning bolt. Lucky srambled to get back into the cave as the Empyrean hit him with an acid bolt. Lucky downed a healing potion. The party crowded into the cave and Anna cast Rope trick. Anna and Lucky climbed up. Rolen and Tyrena found some partial cover behind rocks. They heard a thump above them. Rolen cast fly on himself, Tyrena and Lucky. Lucky cast crown of stars on himself. The Empyrean cast earthquake on mountain and the cave began to collapse. Rocks fell and hit the party as they flew out of the cave.

Rushing in

The Empyrean saw Rolen walk out of the cave holding the sword, and he shot a bolt of radiant energy at him. Rolen joined Anna on her broom and Rolen and cast Dimension Door. They appeared 500 ft up in the air directly next to the flying Empyrean where Rolen hexed it. The Empyrean used his first Legendary action to swing at Rolen, but Rolen used his Armor of Hexes and forced a miss. Anna started blade singing and flew up to the Empyrean’s face and punched him a few times. The Planetar dashed 240 feet up towards the Empyrean. Lucky True Polymorphed Tyrena into an Ancient Brass Dragon and then flew up 70 feet. Using his 2nd legendary action, the Empyrean struck Rolen with his Maul and stunned him. Lucky started falling because Rolen lost concentration on the fly spell. Al polymorphed into a Giant eagle and caught lucky. Tyrena, as an Ancient Brass Dragon, flew up 80 feet and used her sleep breath on the Planetar. The effect did not put the Planetar to sleep as his constitution was strong enough to avoid it. Jaquette Wild shaped into a Giant eagle and moved up 80 feet. The Empyrean struck Rolen once more with his Maul knocking him down to 59 hp. Rolen stuttered, “Need to go down.”

The Empyrean said, “give me the sword” and bashed Rolen down to just 32hp. Knowing Rolen would be dead soon, Anna told the Broom “Gauntlgrym” and sent Rolen and the Broom 50 feet down towards Gauntlgrym. Anna punched the Empyrean and gave herself advantage on her next turn…
