Session 48: Mirabar Report

4.5 Hour Role play session. 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM Party of 8 (The order of Heroes, Inc.): It is the 7th day of the month of Marpenoth (Leaffall) in the 3rd year of the Age of Enialis

Goals:

• Find Zyark who is controlling the Gnolls and stop his assault on Mirabar.

Mirabar

The party arrived at the gates and met two adventurers looking to earn a reward for helping with the Gnoll problem in Mirabar. The two adventurers were an Elf Wizard turned into a Lizard (via reincarnation) named Vaecaesin and a singing Gnome named Fnipper. Introductions were made and the two new adventures were offered to join the Order of Heroes to help with the Gnoll problem.
Three dwarves with sacks of Gnoll heads approached the gate and the guards let them in. The 9 adventures joined together headed into Mirabar. Captain Tyrus Rechs pointed out his favorite establishments and then lead the party to the tavern “It’s always sunny in Faerun.” The bar tender, Karmin Shadowfoot, greeted Captain Rechs and offered him a cigar. Karmin offered ale for all of Captain Rechs friends and led them to a private room. Anna asked for the location of a teleportation circle. Karmin told her that there was one controlled by the Harpers and gave her directions.
Over dinner, Captain Tyrus Rechs told the party that his first goal is to go to Castle Black and see what is left of it. He pulled out the small piece of leather with the rune that Enailis told them could be used to summon Yeenoghu. The castle is a few miles north of Mirabar and the party agreed it would be best to go in the morning. They obtained rooms, had a good meal, sang a few songs, and went to bed.
During the night Captain Rechs was visited by Captain Këvon. Captain Këvon had a massive scar over his face and his right hand was much weaker than his left. He informed Tyrus that Castle Black is completely overrun with Gnolls. Hyenas are drawn into the castle and Gnolls come out. They’ve captured our children and it is believed they have been taken Castle Black, but none have come out. He mentioned that his men have not observed any Gnolls going in or out of the secret passage. Captain Këvon mentioned that there have been reports of Gnolls heading south and the attacks on Mirabar have been less frequent. He also mentioned that he has had no sign of Tamino. Tyrus noticed that Këvon wore the insignia of Lord Commander of Castle Black.

Shopping again.

In the morning, Rolen and Doc played a game of chess as Fredrik tried on his new bear cloak of protection (infused by Doc.) Anna was up early for the auction house and ordered breakfast for the whole party. Jaquette began to talk to chipper and heard two Robbins laughing at Chipper. Rolen, Anna and Vaecaesin saw Jaquette upset at the birds so they fired a crossbow bolt, firebolt and ray of frost and killed the Robbins.
The party ate quickly and headed to the magic item auction house “Miles of Vials” and purchased:

• Rolen bought a bag of holding for 650 gp.
• Vaecaesin bought a 3rd level “Dispel Magic” spell for 100 gp.
• Rolen bought a potion of Fire breath for 400gp.
• Anna paid 1,100 gp for Goggles of night.
• Lucky paid 500gp for five +1 crossbow bolts and gave them to Rolen
• Doc paid 300gp for a potion of Superior healing.
• Lucky gave a dwarf, whom they outbid constantly, a potion of mysterious healing.

Captain Rechs privately approached the auctioneer, a dwarf named Sarastro and a friend of Tyrus. Tyrus asked if he had anything special and offered him some items in trade:

• Tyrus got seven +1 walloping arrows for his +1 hand-crossbow.
• For the mace of terror, he traded him five +3 walloping arrows plus a pipe of smoke monsters.
• Fort the +1 pike Sarastro gave Tyrus eight +2 walloping arrows.

Lucky presented a “magical Lute” and asked him is he had a magical drum. Sarastro told him to come back in a week and he would see what he can do. Tyrus asked Sarastro to be on the lookout for any special tabacco and he gave him his address in Waterdeep.
Fredrik and Lucky went to “I’d hit that” boxing gym and took a couple lessons. After the lesson, Fredrik sparred with an Orc which Fredrik knocked out in just a few rounds. Fredrik thanked them for the lesson. A 2nd Orc came out for Lucky’s lesson. Lucky dodged quite a bit more and lasted a few rounds, but eventually the Orc landed a solid hit and knocked the Wind out of Lucky. Both Lucky and Fredric learned how to gain advantage to 1 attack or 1 saving throw of their choice.
Jaquette went to Blood, Bats, and Beyond and talked to Monostatos. She purchased some moonseed, 500gp powered ruby, 2,000gp of powered diamond, some powdered silver and iron. She asked for some Mistletoe harvested with a golden sickle during the light of a full moon. Although Monostaos did not have that he did sell her a golden sickle for 50gp along with a map of where to harvest mistletoe. He mentioned the full moon was in 1 tenday.
Doc purchased a bunch of reagents for his potions. Fnipper purchased 200gp of incense, 26gp of diamond dust, 4 pieces of Ivory worth 50gp each, one 100gp pearl and some phosphorus. Vaecaesin purchased a sliver of glass, licorice root, gum Arabic, a hemispherical crystal, some iron, a grasshopper leg and a snakes tongue. Lucky purchased 4 pieces of Ivory worth 50gp each.

The road to Castle Black

All stocked up, Tyrus lead the party stealthily through woods towards castle black. Walking through the woods they spotted a party of 6 Gnolls heading south (away from Castle Black.) The party stood back stealthily and then attacked with surprise. Vaecaesin (Vey for short) and Fnipper cast steel wind strike and immediately took out 5 of the gnolls. Doc shoved a potion down Rolen’s throat giving him a faster walking speed and put poison on Rolen’s bolt. Rolen shot the bolts at the last Gnoll’s leg and knocked him out. They found some daggers with a dwarven G on them. Rolen bound the unconscious Gnoll. Tyrus slapped the Gnoll and woke him up. Lucky cast tongues and translated. The gnoll complained of his leg, Rollen ripped his bolt out and the Gnoll passed out from pain. Tyrus scolded Rolen and woke the Gnoll again.
The Gnoll, fearing for his life, was quick to answer questions. Tyrus asked “Where are the Children?” and the Gnoll replied “With Yeenoghu.” Tyrus asked “what is at Castle Black”? and he replied, “Your death.” Tyrus asked “Where are you going?” and the Gnoll replied “South to a cavern where the Gnolls are mustering just north of Gauntlgrym.” Tyrus finished off the Gnoll with his handaxe. Rolen cut off the 6 gnoll heads and put them into a bag of holding.

The secret tunnel to Castle Black

They approached the castle and saw that the upper walls of the castle were being patrolled by Gnolls. Tyrus lead them to a secret passage, down in the ravine. They found a hidden door and Jaquette picked the lock. Fnipper lead the party into a small cave and found another secret door. Scanning the floor, they found no signs of Gnolls. Jaquette pulled out another twig and picked the lock. Lucky gathered some moss. Tyrus found one more secret door on the southern wall. Jaquette tried her twig in the lock and was unable to open it (Doc and Rolen failed also.) Ven came over and unlocked the door with Doc’s picks.
Before opening the last door, they party contemplated a strategy. They thought maybe invisibility, polymorph, or other means to go in unseen. Fredrik said “Why are we going to hide? You just killed 6 of them before I even knew you were fighting.” The party agreed with Fredrik’s wisdom. They burst into a storage room. They checked the door to the south and the one to the West. Both doors were unlocked, and they heard snoring to the door in the West.

Stealthy in the Dark.

The party stealthily opened the door to the west and saw 6 sleeping Gnolls. All but Jaquette and Fnipper walked in slowly and drew their weapons. They stood over the Gnolls and simultaneously stabbed smashed, slashed, and shot. The Gnolls were all killed instantaneously. Rollen cut off their heads and put them into the bag of holding.
The party opened the door to the south into a cavernous area with some roots and mushrooms. They found a door to the south. Tyrus walked in and urged the party to go south into the prison. They found a sleeping prison guard, and 3 cell doors. In the cells were huddled children shivering. They also saw an extraordinarily large ladder leading up to an extraordinarily large trap door. In the room they also found an extraordinarily large stone door with runes written in blood. Lucky and Tyrus snuck up on the Gnoll guard and attacked, Vey walked up and finished the Gnoll guard.

The Children

Jaquette opened the cell doors and Doc checked on the children. There were 2 children in each cell. The kids were certainly hungry and not well taken care of, but they simply stared and shivered. Their eyes stared straight at the large door.
Tyrus and Lucky examined the ladder and the hatch above. They heard pacing and returned down the ladder. Vey cut the head off the Gnoll. Tyrus Lucky and Vey then went back down the hall and found a separate cell. Vey picked the lock and in the room they found 3 more children. Two of the children were in the same catatonic state, shivering but the 3rd child held a large stick as if he were stirring the dirt. Tyrus recognized the child and said “Tamino.”
Rolen took the keys and unlocked the large stone door which led to a 2nd large stone door with more Runes written in Blood. Rolen found the key for that door and opened it to sort of a holding room with shackles in the walls and another very large stone door with more similar runes. Doc delved into the mind of one of the children and saw the child’s vision of a massive Gnoll creature that the child called Yeenoghu. Doc ran to Rolen and told him not to open the next door as its Yeenoghu.
Tyrus picked up the children and Jaquette suggested they bring them to the other children. Tyrus said, “We need to find out what happened here and a way to fix the children, this one is my son.”
Rolen unlocked the 3rd door and hear a voice in his head…
