Session 50: Finding Zyark Report

General Summary

Session 50 – Wednesday January 13, 2021

4 Hour Role play session. 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM

Goals:

Find Zyark who is controlling the Gnolls and stop his assault on Mirabar.

Morning in Mirabar

The party prepared to head south into the Crags. Fredrik looked at a vacant property and contemplated expanding his business. The rest of the party did some more shopping. Lucky purchased several scrolls: Gentle Repose, Magic Mouth and Water Breathing for 1,500gp. He also purchased 100gp worth of spell transcribing materials. Tyrus went to Bruno’s Best Buds and Baccy and talked with PapaGeno. PapaGeno gave him one excellent cigar hand rolled by young female Gnomes in Chult as a thanks for killing Yeenoghu. Tyrus said he wanted to sell cigars from his place in Waterdeep so PapaGeno gave Tyrus a special 60% discount on a bulk purchase of a wide variety of cigars: 94gp for 10 cases with 20 cigars each.
Rolen purchased 60 caltrops, 2 acid vials and 40 crossbow bolts from the general store. He then went to the Temple and purchased 6 flasks of Holy Water for 200gp. Lucky purchased a few cigars. Vae found a music store and purchased a White Viol for 570gp. The party gathered in the Tavern. Baldrak joined them and told them “I’m ready to go with you now.” The party reluctantly agreed to bring him, and they all headed south.

The Journey

The party headed south marching in pairs with Rolen keeping a close eye on Baldrak. They tried to keep a low-profile walking in the valleys between the hills. Tyrus followed the tracks of Gnolls and his fellow rangers that were going south. Lucky collected food along the way and Tyrus was able to hunt a deer. At the end of the first day they spotted a campfire in the distance. They approached carefully and found Rangers of Mirabar. The Rangers had completed their hunt of the Gnolls that had headed south and were returning home. They joined forces for the evening and had a pleasant night. Vae spent some time carving some symbols into his Viol and Lucky copied Identify and Comprehend languages into his spell book. Lucky cast a pleasant dream on Tamino.
In the morning Enialis called Tyrus on the sending stone “Word has reached me that Yeenoghu has been defeated. At your earliest convenience please return to Black Staff tower, I wish to discuss something in person.” Tyrus replied: “we are taking care of a threat near Gauntlgrym, then we shall report to Waterdeep.” Anna sent a message: “I am in route back to port last hoping to collect the Monodrone as well as the Dingy so we can get to the Red Rocks.” Tyrus Replied: “We are investigating Gauntlgrym, will be in port last later. Enialis says hi.” Lucky gave Tyrus a Veterans cane he had picked up in Waterdeep. The other rangers headed back to Mirabar and the party continued south.
Vae cast resilient sphere on Lucky and Lucky had fun rolling through the hills in his ball. He spotted some goblins and ran over them. They found 11 silver and 12 copper on the goblin’s bodies. As the sun began to set, they found where the Rangers caught up and killed the Gnolls. Lucky collected some Gnoll parts and formed them into what looked like 6 gnoll heads (sort of.) They continued along for 5 more days taking out 2 hobgoblin captains and 10 hobgoblins.

Baldrak turns.

On the morning of the 6th day they slowed their approach and tried to be quieter. The spotted 4 Gnolls on patrol. They surprised the Gnolls and attacked. Rolen took out one with his crossbow, Jaquette cast call lighting and took out 2 of the Gnolls, Tyrus shot several arrows into the largest Gnoll bringing him to his knees and Fnipper, said “Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries,” killing it.
A Monodone ran out from behind a hill and yelled "I implore you! Please stop, there is much you need to understand. Primus has allowed this as the Gnolls have a purpose. That is to stop the..." Baldrak shot a ball of fire at the Monodrone and destroyed it, leaving behind nothing but dust and a spell scroll case containing 2 spells of Plane shift along with 2 tuning forks.
Rolen and the others demanded an explanation. Baldrak said, “They can’t be trusted, we need to kill Gnolls.” Rolen demanded more of an explanation. Jaquette told Tyrus that she doesn’t trust Baldrak. Rolen and Lucky continued to press Baldrak and Jaquette darkened the clouds threatening Baldrak. Baldrak revealed his true nature, that of a Green Slaad, and cast Fireball upon the Rolen, Tyrus and Jaquette. Tyrus and Rolen shot arrows at him. The Slaad bit Rolen and then slashed at him. The Slaad yelled out “I’m trying to help you get rid of the Gnolls.” Vae cast hold monster and paralyzed the Slaad. Tyrus slashed the Slaad in half with his greatsword.
Fnipper tried to figure out who “Primus” is and cast Legend Lore. Lucky began identifying the tuning forks. Fnipper recalled that Primus is the god of Law and order from the plane of Mechanus. Lucky identified the 2 tuning forks; one is for the Material plane and the other for Mechanus.
Jaquette cast cure wounds and Vae cast life transference to Rollen. Lucky realized that Rollen had been bitten and may have a baby salad in him. Jaquette cast Heal and cured him. They party tried to figure out what the heck is going on with Slaads and Gnolls and Modrons. Jaquette talked with some Ivy who pointed the party towards the south.

General Gronor

The party quickly started heading south looking out for patrols. They went higher into the hills approaching the mountains of Gauntlgrym. Tyrus heard the sounds of an approaching small horse over Lucky eating chips. Tyrus hid and Rolen stood up to see who was approaching. A Dwarf riding a small horse questioned Rolen and told him to leave. The dwarf said that he’s General Gronor and had heard that someone had slain a Slaad in this area. Lucky disguised himself as a Dwarf General and questioned General Gronor. General Gronor told the party to leave. Rolen shot the horse and killed it.
General Gronor fell off the horse and lucky quickly cast disguise self to make himself look like the General. Lucky went to the top of the hill and saw several Gnolls and spoke to them as the General. The Gnolls look puzzled and Lucky cast Tongues and told them that he’s okay and they should go. Meanwhile the party started to dog pile on the Gnoll. Vae cast hold person on the General and Rollen put shackles on him and removed all his weapons. They recalled that General Gronor is one of Zyark’s best Dwarven generals.
Lucky cast mass suggestion on the Generals personal guard Gnoll’s guard telling them to march east. All 4 Gnolls left. Jaquette stripped the General naked and Rolen questioned him. The General explained that the caves are filled with Slaadi. Zyark had made a deal with Yeenoghu to get Gnolls to help him clear out the Slaadi. He also told them that the Modrons also want to kill the Slaadi. Rolen asked him the intentions on Mirabar. The General said, they were just using Mirabar to train the Gnolls. Rolen asked where Zyark was. The General refused to answer.
Tyrus asked, “What is in it for the Gnolls and why so many Gnolls.” The General responded, “because there are so many Slaadi. There is a way into Gauntlgrym, but the way is blocked by the Slaadi.” Rolen proposed that the party could help with he Slaad problem if they take him to Zyark. The general explained that Zyark made a deal with some warlock to learn how to summon Yeenoghu so that he could build a Gnoll Army. Rolen freed the general and the general agreed to take the party to the mustering point.

Zyark

General Gronor lead the party to a very well defended cavern and to a large room with a very muscular young dwarf: Zyark. Rolen and Tyrus lead the conversation. Tyrus asked what the interest in Mirbar was. Zyark explained he has no interest in Mirabar, it was just a training ground. Zyark threw a small tantrum saying that “Gauntlgrym is mine, mine!” Zyark explained that the Modrons have given them a little guidance on killing the Slaadi. Tyrus offered help, if “No Gnolls ever go north to Mirabar again.” Tyrus explained that Yeenoghu is dead. Zyark agreed that he would no longer send any Gnolls against Mirabar. Tyrus seemed satisfied.
Rolen asked about the Warlock who gave him the summoning rune and Zyark didn’t remember his name as it was some meeting setup by some hag. They party debated if they should aid Zyark. Lucky said, “I’d like to see Gauntlgrym again.” Zyark brought out a Duodrone. Lucky and Fnipper spoke to it. It said, “They’re going to get slaughtered.” The Duodrone’s purpose was to help someone get to Mechanus to learn how to defeat the Slaadi.
Zyark asked the party how they would help kill the Slaadi. Zyark doesn’t care for the Modrons and believes that Strength is what kills them. Rolen and Tyrus wanted to walk away. Zyark offered the party, as a whole, 10% of Gauntlgrym’s profit for the next 50 years if they successfully help eliminate the Slaadi. Vae and Fnipper backed out saying “This is above our pay grade.” Zyark offered the party to spend the night and think it over.

Completed: Discovered why the Gnolls are attacking Mirabar - it was training.
