Session 58: To catch a Slaad. Report

Session 58 – Wednesday March 17, 2021

4 Hour roleplay/Battle session. 6:00 PM to 10:00PM

Morning at the cemetery

As usual Rolen woke up first to enjoy the morning. Jaquette woke up spoke with the azaleas and collected some weeds, wild nuts, leaves and a few bird eggs to make a salad for breakfast. Tyrus felt a little out of shape so he spent some time exercising. Anna heard Tyrus exercising and slept in for another hour. When Anna woke up, she had her unseen servant, get some water from Ichabod’s hut, and then had the servant brush her hair. Rolen looked at Jaquette’s Breakfast and woke up Lucky to make something other than rabbit food.
Rolen asked for a wheelbarrow and Ichabod pointed them to Mort the grave digger who provided one. After a brief conversation about past attempted grave robberies from the Bacon Crypt (Chris P Bacon) they took the wheelbarrow back to where the Mind Flayer Bodies were. There was a total of 3 bodies (from the one that kept creating new bodies)
Jaquette extracted the remaining 2 hearts and 1 of the brains from the body. Lucky put the parts into is chest of preserving (along with some food.) Anna’s servant cleaned up Jaquette. They put the brainless, handless, bodies and the headless, handless body into the wheelbarrow. Tyrus (after his morning workout) wheeled the bodies (covered by 1 cape) to Neverwinter.

Back at Neverwinter

Rolen and Tyrus talked their way into the city with a cart of corpses. The city guard, Tormir, escorted them to the City watch headquarters. Saul Chase came out to great them (again to his own theme music.) He paid each person the promised 10gp/ night but only offered 50 gp for the killed creatures. He said something about wanting to be sure the problem is solved before he pays full price (and added a colorful metaphor.) He gave the party a note and said if they get Ichabod to sign again, after at least 3 days, he’d pay the remaining 450gp.
Lucky asked for an alchemist shop and he pointed them back to the Dragon’s Quill on Bernard Street. Rolen took the mind flayer cape and put it on. They all went to the Dragon’s Quill and were greeted by Adamar. Adamar looked down his nose at Lucky but then Lucky pulled out the Brain, hearts and some Slaad claws. Adamar gave them a 500gp diamond, a 500gp Emerald and a 500gp Ruby along with 5pp. He then offered the party one of the hearts to act in the same way a Plane Shift scroll would work with one relatively small possible side effect of a time shift of up to 10 days. Rolen paid 150 gp for the heart that would be ready in a 10day. Anna bought a few spell components and Adamar thanked the party and winked at Tyrus.

Practice Surgery

Lucky introduced his Oculus to the group and named him “Bitey.” Jaquette cast windwalk on the party and they all flew towards the caverns outside of Gauntlgrym. They went to the lunchroom and Lucky made some finger food for lunch. Tyrus found the Blacksmith, a dwarf named Grydir and asked for some Shackles. Grydir told them they could take 2 pair from the prisons and he’d fashion some replacements. He told them Barrak would have keys. Rolen gave Grydir the breastplate for the cause and Grydir gave Rolen 10pp for it.
The party went to the prison area to practice brain surgery on a Slaad. Tyrus intimidated Barrak and demanded the keys and more chains. The Gnoll Orthug retrieved the chains for the party. The party found a torture room at the end of the prison with a table that would be sufficient for surgery. Jaquette, Anna and Anna’s unseen servant cleaned the table and prepared for surgery. Luycky cast tongues on Tyrus and then Tyrus executed a brilliant plan to trick a salad in one of the cells to approach the door. The plan worked and Tyrus blew the essence of Ether in its face, knocking it unconscious.
They dragged the Red Slaad to Jaquette and shackled it to the table. Jaquette performed the surgery flawlessly and extracted a brilliant Red Gem. Jaquette then did a thorough exam and told the party the Slaad is male. Lucky slapped the Slaad awake and Rolen, Holding the gem told the Slaad to speak and sing and it obeyed. They questioned the Slaad and it explained that before he became a salad, his party was attacked within the caves by a group of 10 Slaadi. He said the attack only happened within about 100 yards of the cave entrance and it appeared that they were looking for something.

Zyark

Rolen went to the lunchroom and found General Gronor and Zyark eating. Rolen explained what they learned and Zyark asked for the gem to go play with the Slaad. Rolen asked if the party could keep whatever they find on the Slaad. Zyark said that anything of power would belong to him as well as any of the gems and such of Gauntlgrym, but anything else the Slaads had that were not pilfered from Gauntlgrym the party could keep. Rolen noticed that Zyark had a couple of rings that looked magical.
Zyark offered a Gnoll to lead them to the cave entrance. Rolen asked for a map and Zyark drew a very crude map. Rolen asked General Gronor make some enhancements and he did. Rolen turned the Gnoll down and was able to read the map very clearly.

The entrance to Gauntlgrym

Anna turned her cat into a spider and the party walked to the cave entrance. Ann sent her spider into the cave and Lucky sent Bitey to hunt in the hills (but not too far.) Anna sent the spider in to scout out the cave. The Spider came back and reported there are 7 Slaad about 150 feet into the cave. Tyurs and Anna formed a plan to try to distract and stun the creatures and then run away, luring one of them out and capture it.
Anna and Tyrus went in and Jaquette, Rolen and Lucky waited by the mouth of the cave. Lucky tried to collect some mushrooms that made his hand numb. Anna and Tyrus approached stealthily and observed 7 Slaadi spread out holding wooden staffs poking the walls searching for something. They saw two large Red ones, three large Blue Slaad and two grey salad. Anna cast her distracting coin into the room and Tyrus threw in a couple of flash bangs. Several of them were stunned or distracted but one grey salad was clearly upset with the situation and pointed at Anna and Tyrus.

Catching a Slaad

Tyrus cast spike growth on one section to slow some of the Slaadi down and he ran towards the cave entrance. One of the Blue Slaad attacked Anna but missed. The grey Slaad also tried to attack Anna with its great sword but it too missed. Anna cast Mirror image on herself and dashed away. The grey salad flew after Anna and Tyrus while the other grey salad and one of the Blue Slaad circled around the loop to flank the party.
Jaquette cast Plant growth inside the cavern causing all the moss and plants in the cave to grow wildly basically making all the area (except the area where they were) to be extremely difficult terrain. The flying Grey Slaadi were not affected. Rolen cast force cage on the Grey Slaad trying to flank the party. The Grey Slaad within the cage disappeared from within the force cage but the way remained blocked by the cage. The wounded Grey Slaad cast fireball on everyone other than Lucky and Anna. Anna attacked the Grey Slaad with a Mind Whip wounding it slightly. Jaquette then polymorphed the Slaad into a Chicken. Jaquette picked up the chicken and the party walked back to the caverns.
DM Note: The Grey Slaad was missing 36HP.
