Session 61: The Invasion of Gauntlgrym Report

Session 61 – Wednesday April 7, 2021

4.5 Hour roleplay / shopping session. 5:30 PM to 10:00PM

The aftermath of the Dragon Slaughter

Anna and Fredrick administered a healing potion to Rolen, bringing him back from unconsciousness. Lucky, furious, told them that Jaquette was dead. Fredrik cried and asked about Chipper. Lucky produced a badly wounded and burned (but still alive) Chipper from his pocket. Fredrik gave Chipper a healing potion. Lucky sang his spell scroll of Raise Dead and then spent the next hour singing until Jaquette’s spirit returned and she was brought back to life while Fredrick watched. She was weakened but alive. In the meantime, Anna searched the Dragon and found nothing. After a short rest, Anna and Lucky continually cast detect magic and searched in the area for the portable hole.

The return of Slim

Slim Triskin and a Marut materialized near Jaquette, Fredrik and Tyrus. Slim pointed at Tyrus and said, “That’s him.” Fredrik ran to defend Tyrus and Jaquette polymorphed Tyrus into a Giant Eagle. Tyrus (as the eagle) flew up 10 feet in the air and circled the party. Slim said “I’m under contract to deliver this to Tyrus.” Slim pulled out the vest covered with Control gems that Rolen had asked to be sent to Tyrus when he was in Mechanus. Jaquette ended concentration and Tyrus transformed back into himself and fell to the ground with a thud. Slim handed the vest to Tryus. He then noticed the dead dragon and said, “Did you do that?” Lucky said, “We did.”
Slim told the party that all the outstanding contracts are fulfilled and said, “We’re all good.” He then offered to help the party find the dragon’s lair. He offered to find the lair for 50% of the treasure. Rolen crouched in the trees and prepared to kill Slim. Rolen scoped then Marut and thought to himself, “If I were to kill that thing too, there would be not witnesses.” Anna and Slim began a lengthy negotiation for the specific % of the contract. Lucky asked if Slim could also find the portable hole. Slim had the Marut find the portable hole as a good faith offering.
Anna and Slim finally agreed on a Contract: “If Slim Triskin identifies the location of the lair of a Golden dragon named Gildon, the Order of heroes will complete a thorough search and retrieval of all items from the lair with a ten-day of Slim locating it. As the finder of the lair Slim will receive 45% of all Gold and Platinum. Slim will also receive 50% (his choice) of all valuable art objects, or other non-magical items that have a monetary value. The Order of Heroes will keep 100% of all gems, statues, magical items, weapons, shields, armor, and clothing. If there are any dragon eggs within the lair, Slim will receive 1.”
Rolen, after getting a good look at the Marut rethought his plans. He then handed Lucky a clear bottle of poison and told him, “After he finds the treasure, make Slim a meal and put this in it.” Slim gave lucky a sending stone and Lucky gave Slim a chunk of flesh for him to find the Dragon’s lair.

Dissecting the Ancient Gold Dragon

Slim left and Lucky directed the party in obtaining all the useable parts for the Gold Dragon and the party proceeded to harvest much of the dragon. They failed to recover the heart and the wings, but they did recover many other parts. After butchering the dragon for parts, the party then decided to go directly to Neverwinter to sell what they collected. Fredrik hired a crew to get all the bones.
They sold most of the dragon stakes at various establishments. Rolen took most of the other items to the dwarven armory “Clobbering Time” and the dwarf named Thotharn Mountainhand. Rolen commissioned Totharn to make a few items that would be ready in 2 tendays (the 13th of Uktar.)
The party collected 179 steaks. Anna Sold 130 of them for 198gp. The party had collected 40 scales and Rolen used 30 plus paid 2,500 gp to Commission a Breastplate of Fire Resistance. The party collected 1 Fire breath sack, 1 Strength sapping sack, 7 claws, 11 teeth, 1 tongue, and 1 Tail tendon. With those items, Rolen commissioned a Flame-tongue short sword and a Gold Dragon Tail Whip for only 2,000gp. The party kept 10 scales, 2 eyes, 49 steaks and Rolen kept a bit of the leather from the wing.

Back to Gauntlgrym

The party windwalked back to Gauntlgrym and met with Zyark. Zyark told them that he wanted to go in with Fredrik and challenge him to a contest of strength to see who could bring down the tunnel first. He also waged his War Hammer against Fredrik’s spear. Zyark told them that he had two Alhoons for each mission. The party finalized their plans. Jaquette would go to the large room, Lucky would hold off the ravine, Tyrus and Rolen would be with the majority of the troops at the long hall and Anna would go in to lure out the Slaads. The party debated means by which Anna could lure out Slaadi. Zyark mentioned that the Slaadi really hate Modrons. The party spent the night in Lucky’s mansion.

The Invasion Begins

In the morning, Slim sent Anna a message letting the party know the location of the Gold Dragon’s lair. He told Anna there is a mansion on the side of a mountain over a very small village just off the long Road south of Triboar. Fredrik said he’s heard of the street performers near there, the Mimes of Phandelver. Anna said, “That’s where we’re going if we survive the invasion.”
The Heroes split the control Gems. Lucky had 5, Rolen had 5, Anna had 1, Tyrus had 5 and Jaquette had 3. They retrieved their Slaadi and met up with Zyark, Gronor, the Gnolls and the Alhoons. Zyark gave each of the Heroes a horn he told them how to use it. “Blow it 3 times if you are overrun and need to get out, 1 time if you just need help and twice to cancel the help.”

Fredrik and Zyark

Fredrik and Zyark made their way down the western side of the tunnels with the Alhoons. They encountered no Slaadi. Zyark and Fredrik began hitting the walls. Zyark started out first but Fredrik quickly caught up and took the lead. Zyark was using his fists and then switched to his war hammer. Fredrik finished before Zyark did and Zyark was not very happy about it but Zyark said, “after the battle you can have my hammer.” They stood back and examined the collapsed area briefly and both said, “Looks good to me!”

Lucky and the Alhoons

Lucky and the Alhoons set off towards the ravine. Lucky let the Alhoon lead the way. It was not long before they ran into a lone Gray Slaad who immediately began attacking the Alhoons. Lucky pulled out his lute and tried to suggest to the Slaad that he should get in line with the others but the Slaad did not listen to Lucky’s suggestion. The Slaad cast fireball on the Alhoons and the Alhoons took 28 dmg and used their Mind Blast feature on the Gray Slaad. Lucky, the Alhoons and Lucky’s Slaad continued to attack the Gray Slaad and one of the Alhoon finished off the Gray Slaad. One of Lucky’s Red Slaad was knocked down to 46 HP remaining.

Jaquette and the Alhoons

Jaquette walked into the caves with the Alhoons and her 3 Slaadi. They all made their way to a domed chamber where the Alhoons explained (as an adult would to a young child) the plan. They explained they would block this passage with their magical wall of force while Jaquette hid on top of a cliff in the room and pummeled the incoming Slaad with Spells. Fredrik and headed over to join Jaquette.
