Session 63: Gildon's Lair. Report

General Summary

Session 63 – Wednesday April 21, 2021

5 Hour Roleplay and Battle session. 5:30 PM to 10:30P

Before we go…

Fredrik went to Zyark and remined Zyark of the deal for the hammer. Zyark, being a bit inebriated, agreed if he got it back if Fredrik died. Fredrik agreed and gave him a stone and said, “If you should die, I get that back.” Zyark agreed.

In the morning, Lucky woke up late and made breakfast. Tyrus mentioned that he was running low on magic arrows and asked the party to keep an eye out for them. The party ate and decided to windwalk to the dragon’s lair and they could go shopping after. Jaquette cast windwalk. Between Jaquette and Fredrik they got a bit lost along the way. Eight hours later, they landed about 2 miles north of the village just before dusk.

The Village of Hillford

Lucky made a snack while walking along the road and Fredrik found some berries that are known to cause intestinal issues. They made it into the village just at sunset. They found a local pub called “The Defeated Snowdrop.” Jaquette made friends with a couple of old ladies named Ivette and Rosmand. Lucky sang a couple songs to an old couple who paid him no attention.

After dinner, they exited the pub and Jaquette spotted a trail up the side of the mountain and a faint light up high. Rolen pointed Lucky to a group of children playing hide and seek. Lucky saw a small girl looking for her friends. He went up to her and asked her what she was doing, and she introduced herself as Constance Hornthall. Lucky was very charming, so she asked him to help find her friends. Lucky helped her play hide and seek. Lucky terrified one of the kids Constance found and Constance found it hilarious. Lucky asked Constance for her signature. She did and then had to run home. She ran into the woods.

Up the side of the mountain

Jaquette pointed out the trial that runs up the side of the mountain the entrance of which was in the woods. They walked into the woods and found the trail. Lucky realized it was the same general way Constance went. They followed the trail up the side of the mountain to a small mansion built into the rock. Fredrik lifted Lucky who knocked on the front door.

A Tall skinny man greeted them with a formal “Yes?” The party introduced themselves and the man introduced himself as Mr. Pennyworth. From behind the man the voice of Constance was heard “Who is it Alfred?” Lucky called out to Constance and Mr. Pennyworth looked quite upset. Constance ran out and hugged Lucky. Mr. Pennyworth pointed Constance back into the house and yelled, “Master Rheagar, please take care of your sister.” Lucky introduce the party as the “order of Heroes” and Constance ran back with a huge smile and said “Alfred! They’re the chosen ones!”

The Chosen ones?

Alfred asked them “Did you complete your mission already?” He then invited them into the house and offered them food. Alfred explained that the children’s parents were killed several years ago during the reign of Tiamat. Alfred then asked if the party was here to see Gildon’s wife? They said yes. Lucky Offred to help prepare some food and Alfred led Lucky and Rolen into the kitchen. Alfred went to retrieve Cersei.

The remaining discussed their predicament. Anna Spelled it out “We killed the dragon, and now we’re here to rob him. We also signed a contract legally binding us to rob him. So, we either kill more people in cold blood, rob them blind or be branded as criminals.” Jaquette wanted to leave. Fredrik said, “We did a bad thing before, we shouldn’t do another bad thing.” Rolen joined the conversation. “Is it hurting them to simply take their possessions?”

Jaquette said, we could take some stuff since Slim will never know how much stuff is here. Rolen explained we don’t’ need to take their china, just the treasure hoard. Fredrick agreed with Jaquette. Rolen proposed they just kill Slim.

Lady Cersei and the mission.

The butler Alfred brought in the Lady Cersei . She formally greeted the party. She said, “My husband chose you for a specific task?” The party said “yes.” Fredrick asked if her husband had told her what the task was. Lady Cersei angrily replied “Do not insult me, I do not wish to speak of it. I did not wish to speak of it with my husband. It is not my idea! Good Day SIR!” She left the room angrily.

Alfred asked if the party understood the gravity of the situation? Lucky came in with Dinner and they asked Alfred to join. Rolen explained that several of the party members were not present when Gildon provided the task so Alfred explained. “I’m sure Gildon explained that his wife is barren. Gildon wanted to provide for his wife a dragon’s egg that she could raise. He was looking for a strong adventuring party to steal another dragon’s egg. Being the odd mix of an ancient Gold and Red Dragon, the specific color of the egg is not important.” Alfred explained how Gildon found a badly wounded Cersei and rescued her. Fredrik said, “Very Noble” and Alfred corrected him. “Gildon Believes in Honor, Justice Valor, Truth and Compassion.” Jaquette said “As do we.”

Let’s make a decision

Alfred told the party that Lady Cersei had taken the children to spend the night with some friends. Alfred offered the party the children’s room. Lucky cast his magnificent mansion and the party went it. The tone of the mansion was a bit off, as if Lucky was quite disturbed. Anna again explained to Fredrik that Cersei fully expects us to find her a dragon’s egg. Rolen said we should solve the first problem first. Lucky said, “if you need a tie braker call me.” And then he left.
Tyrus said, “We know now that there is no egg for Slim. We have two choices, 1) We simply give Slim a large sum of money that we say is from the Dragon or otherwise deal with Slim. 2) We steal from the dragon without harming these good people. I vote we steal from the dragon hoard.”
Anna said, “Morally I have no problem stealing from a red dragon but it’s the rest of the family. I have no preference” Fredrik, “We need to get an egg from somewhere, so we can rob another horde and give to Slim from that horde, or we could tell the lady that Slim killed the dragon man. I do not want to steal the treasure from here or we’ll have another dragon angry at us.”
Jaquette, “I agree with Fredrik’s opinion.”
Rolen, “Fredrik’s idea is great, but it’s not going to work. Because we’re not going to get another egg because there isn’t a father for it. Once she finds out her husband is dead, she’ll be after the murderers. I’m with Tyrus, we should get the treasure from here and getting out of here.”
Anna decided “Let’s get the treasure.” Fredrik said, “Okay, but we will not kill the girl’s mommy.”
Lucky came back and said, “I need your word we will not kill any Children.” The party agreed. Rolen had a vision of his patron who promised to take care of the butler if he brought his patron interesting trinket.

Heads or tails?

They began their search for the lair and found a parlor room. Fredrik summoned the bear spirit and asked if there are any natural caves or exterior entrance to a cave. Fredrik saw the bear spirt walk through the painting of a waterfall. Fredrik searched the painting’s frame and found a switch. The painting was a door and Fredrik opened it.

The next room had 3 rows of spinning coins. Anna took a copper piece and threw it at one of the spinning coins, it fell through. Everyone contemplated what to do but Tyrus was the first one to reach out and stop a coin. He guessed heads and it was heads and 500gp appeared on the coin. He then stepped on the coin to his right that had stopped spinning and he took 17 necrotic damage. He stepped forward onto a spinning coin and nothing happened. He went to the 3rd row and his HP increased by 4 permanently.
Anna went next:

Fail: She was reduced to 1 hp
Success: She gained expertise with insight until her next level
Fail: She lost 20% of all the coins she had.

Jaquette went next:

Fail: She forgot her Poison Spray cantrip until the next level.
Success: She permanently gained 2HP
Success: 200 gp appeared at her feet.

Lucky:

Success: Regained 2 spell slots
Fail: His next 7 rolls were made with disadvantage
Fail: A Thick residue covered his body and he was “slowed.”

Fredrik:

Fail: He lost 30% of all his coins
Fail: He became unattuned to all his magical items.
Fail: He was deafened
He ran back onto a red coin fail: Disadvantage on all initiative rolls to next level
He went forward again fail: He lost 7 of his Hit dice as if they were spent

Rolen:

Success: 3 Potions of Superior healing appeared at his feet:
Fail: 12 Lightning damage
Fail (Double): 1 level of exhaustion, His intelligence fell by 2 (until his next level)

The treasury

They walked into a very exotic treasure room that had:

5 paintings each worth 1,000 gp each
3 Rugs each worth 750gp each
7,500 gp art objects - Jade chess board with solid gold playing pieces
7,500 gp art objects - Bejeweled ivory drinking horn with gold filigree
7,500 gp art objects - Gold cup set with emeralds
1 chest of gold (1,000 gp)
3 golden statues

Rolen walked to the Jade Chess set and Anna began rolling up one of the rugs. As she finished all 3 statues turned to look at her. Tyrus rushed in and hit the nearest golden statue with his sword, chipping the gold plating and revealing a stone Golem underneath. Seeing it was stone, Jaquette tried to turn the stone into mud but it failed. Rolen attacked the Golem and the Golem cast slow on Rolen. The large horse exhaled a poison gas at Anna and Rolen and Anna fell unconscious. Lucky inspired Fredrik and Fredrik ran in savagely.

The battle was rather intense with Jaquette bringing Anna back from unconsciousness a couple times. The party battled three Golems. Lucky used up his 7 disadvantage rolls. Lucky took out two of the Golems with Destructive Waves. Tyrus finished off the Last Golem with his great sword. But the party was not in great shape with everyone but Lucky wounded and many spell slots used.
