Session 90: Elder Brain Dragon?! Report
General Summary
Session 90 – Wednesday December 8, 2021 – Elder Brain Ancient Red Shadow Dragon
5 Hour battle session (nothing but battle!) 5:45 PM to 10:45PMParty of 4 (The order of Heroes, Inc.):
It is the 21st day of the month of Uktar (The Rotting) in the 3rd year of the Age of Enialis- Annalisa (Anna) – Human L8 Monk – L6 Wizard /L3Fighter – Ryan Armstrong (remote)
- Jaquette Mara – L17 Human Druid – Jackie Armstrong
- Lucky Lightfoot – Leprechaun – L16 Bard/L1 Sorcerer – Jacob Munson
- Luigi Risotto – Wood Elf L15 Monk/L2 Wizard – Dan King (Absent-Church)
- Rolen – Human L17 Warlock – Josh Pozsonyi
- Tyrena Rechs – Human L14 Ranger/L3 Fighter – Nathan Gioconda (at a boring opera)
- Jeter Kaiser – L16 Human Sorcerer – Spencer Armstrong (Back at school)
Goals:
- Find the Mind Flayer lair and raise an army to take out the Elder Brain
- Gather the other parts of the god Destroyer (Blade, Hilt and guard)
- Locate the Amber Sarcophagi and destroy them with the god Destroyer
- Take the sword to the Summer Queen and have her destroy it.
- White Dragon at Purple Rocks
Round 3: Save Rolen from certain death!
The forest was filled with cobwebs and heavy brush and thorns, moving through it was difficult. Anna ran up the back of Al, T-Rex and using step of the wind leaped off the T-Rex, cast jump and then used an action surge and landed on the dragon. She tried to use her monk abilities to break Rolen from the grapple but failed. Lucky cast fireball and the Dragon choose to save its saving throw. Al, as a T-Rex, leapt into the air and reverted to his short self. Just barely able to see Rolen, Al cast polymorph on Rolen, turning him into a Giant Ape. The enslaved silver dragon swooped in and attacked Rolen. Jaquette turned herself into a Giant Eagle and then was able to break her fear. The Dragon released the ape and rotated to dump the ape of its back but Rolen and Anna both held on tight and didn’t fall. The Dragon tried to enslave Rolen but with a little inspiration from Lucky, that too failed. Ungrappled, Rolen the Giant Ape started bashing on the dragon as Anna yelled at it “We’re leaving!”Round 4: Anna turns on the Ape
Anna looked into the distance and saw a large group of flying Mind Flayers heading toward the party. Determined to save Rolen, Anna punched the Giant Ape and stunned it. The dragon’s legendary tentacles hit and grappled the Ape again. Lucky spent his time trying to become unfrightened. Al cast blink on himself and headed back to towards the downed troops. The Dragon continued to hit the Ape with its tentacles and then grappled Anna. The silver dragon attacked Rolen the ape and then flew away. Jaquette the eagle cast ice storm to just hit the Elder Brain Dragon. The Elder Brain Dragon critically hit the ape and brought it down to 1 HP. Then the Elder Dragon smacked it again and broke the polymorph and brough Rolen down to just 31 HP as he remained stunned from Anna.Round 5: Dragon Droppings
Anna cast Misty Step towards Rolen and poured a healing potion down his throat and held onto Rolen. The Dragon flung Rolen off it’s back and Anna held on tightly as they both hit the forest and fell to the ground. Lucky witnessed the situation and was able to break his fright. Al continued to head back. Jaquette the Eagle saw 8 Mind Flayers heading toward them and dashed towards the Dragon. The Dragon turned and dashed away from the OoH. Rolen saw the webs, heard the spiders, looked angrily at Anna and cast Fly upon her and himself and because he was hasted by the sword, his flight speed was doubled.Round 6-8: The Chase begins
Anna cast jump on herself, jumped up and cast Ashardalon’s Stride and dashed after the Dragon. Al polymorphed lucky into a Giant pink eagle and gave him a Bardic Inspiration. Lucky dashed towards the Elder Brain Dragon. Jaquette started to dash towards the dragon and Rolen, being hasted by the sword dashed forward. The party continued the chase for another round and Rolen consumed a healing potion.On the Eight round, Eight Mind Flayers zoomed towards the dashing party and split up with 2 Mind Flayers heading towards each of the party members. On Mind Flayer of each pair used its Mind Blast to try to stun the party but all of the Order of Heroes were too strong and resisted. The second of each, with a sagging face cast Lightning Bolt. Anna absorbed the damage but lost concentration on her Stride and then recast the spell on herself and dashed past the mind flayers. Lucky avoided most of the damage and zoomed on past them. Rolen counterspelled the lightning bolt and continued to dash. Jaquette took all the damage and maintained concentration on her vultures. She then slowed to cast Ice storm on the Mind Flayers targeting 6 of them and hitting all 6.
Round 9: Jaquette goes down
The Mind Flayers all turned to Jaquette (as she was the only one remaining) and blasted her with their minds. The damage destroyed the wild shape and Jaquette was stunned and fell to the ground. Anna stopped for a moment to catch her breath. Lucky continued to dash. Jaquette found herself stunned in the thick forest and the cobwebs. Shaking off the stun, she turned into a Giant Wolf spider and headed back towards the troops. Rolen (still hasted) continued to dash just above the forest canopy and passed the Silver and Elder Brain Dragons without being noticed.Rounds 10,11, 12: Positioning for the kill
Anna pulled a spell scroll out of her haversack and held onto it. Lucky dashed again and gained 1 level of exhaustion. Rolen dashed again. Anna flew without dashing and consumed a healing potion and regained a few HP from her 2nd wind. Lucky had Al drop concentration and Lucky turned back into himself (flying) and continued to dash. Rolen continued to dash ahead of the dragon and approached the end of the forest.Anna continued to fly at her normal speed and didn’t dash because she didn’t want to be exhausted. Lucky continued to dash and avoided his exhaustion and his blink spell ended. Rolen landed exhausted in the clearing as the haste spell ended and spent his turn just catching his breath waiting for the Elder Brain Dragon to appear.
Round 13 – Bad Luck for Lucky
Anna continued to move at her normal fly speed, lagging behind everyone. Lucky was able to fly within spell range and cast fireball at the Elder Brain Dragon doing just a little bit of fire damage to the dragon. Clearly ticked off, the dragon turned on Lucky and spewed his tadpole breath upon him infesting him with a Mind Flayer tadpole and then approached Lucky to kill him. Rolen waited patiently in the clearing for the Dragons to show up. The dragon whipped a tentacle at lucky and grappled him.Anna, 350 feet back behind Lucky moved forward 80 feet and grabbed another spell scroll from her Haversack. Another tentacle smacked Lucky in the head badly hurt lucky. At the start of Lucky’s turn the tadpole continued to dig into his brain and continued to hurt him. Lucky recast Blink and escaped the Dragon’s grapple. The Silver dragon flew past Rolen. The Elder Brain dragon saw Anna’s flaming boots and dashed directly towards her away from Rolen. Rolen consumed his last healing potion still awaiting the Dragon.
Round 15 – The plan has changed
Anna cast protection from Good and Evil and then dashed towards the dragon but through the thick of the forest. Lucky blinked back into existence and headed directly towards the dragon and cast firebolt at the dragon and blinked away. The Dragon circled the forest above Anna and looked for Lucky. The Dragon’s long tentacles whipped through the forest at Anna but Anna cast shield and avoided the attack. Rolen (500 feet away from Anna and Lucky) turned invisible and moved towards the edge of forest still waiting for Elder Brain Dragon to appear.Round 16 – The deal gets worse
Anna, in the thick webs and bramble deep in the forest saw 3 large phase spiders appear and head directly towards her. She started blade singing and casting green flame blade on the whip. She began whipping the webs to drive the spiders back but unfortunately the spiders were not intimidated. Anna continued to head in the same direction through the difficult terrain. Lucky poofed back into the material plane, took psychic damage from his infestation, flew towards Anna and cast Aid upon himself adding 40HP to his and Anna’s Max. The Silver dragon glided past Rolen. The Elder Brain Dragon smacked Anna with the tentacle and Anna lost concentration on her protection spell. The Elder Brain Dragon picked up Anna and flung her 30 feet away back towards the wounded army. The Dragon then dashed towards his lair. Rolen flew up above the canopy and saw the dragon coming and prepared for its arrival.Round 17 – Anna turns the tide.
Anna with tears welling in her eyes, spotted the dragon through the trees and held a spell scroll in her hand waiting for someone else to make one more attack. Lucky blinked back into existence, took some more psychic damage and then cast thunderwave at the Elder Brain Dragon. Lucky gave Anna a bardic inspiration. As a reaction, Anna used the spell scroll to cast Power word Stun and the dragon fell to the ground stunned! The Dragon lay on the ground and immediately shook off the stun. Rolen saw what happened and dashed towards his friends. The phase spiders moved in on Anna and the dragon but missed Anna.Anna Misty Stepped up to the dragon and punched it a few times. Lucky grabbed a spell scroll from Anna and read Power word heal, healing himself from the tadpoles and restoring his health to the maximum. The dragon attacked Anna, grappled her and took off into the sky. Rolen grabbed one of his stars from his robe used it to cast magic missiles at the dragon.
Round 19 – Rolen the Ancient Red Shadow Elder Brain Dragon Slayer.
Anna took some psychic damage from the dragon’s tentacle and then used her very last spell slot to cast lighting bolt at the dragon. The dragon evaded some of the damage and smacked her in the head with a tentacle, knocking Anna unconscious. Lucky cast aid on Anna brining her back to life with 5 hp. The Dragon flung Anna into a tree knocking her unconscious and then she fell to the ground taking even more damage. The dragon then dashed right over Rolen. Rolen was approaching very stealthily, and the dragon did not see him. Rolen cast Blade of disaster on the dragon massively wounding him and then with the sword stabbed into the creature smiting him and killing him! Rolen gained 540 temporary hit points.Anna lay on the ground dying. Lucky, with his Keoghtom’s Ointment, ran to Anna, removed a branch from her side and rubbed in the ointment saving her life. The enslavement of the Silver Dragon ended. The party stood in the woods for a moment, taking a deep breath and saw they were still surrounded by spiders.
