Session 92: The Mind Flayer Lair Report

General Summary

Session 92 – Wednesday December 22, 2021 – Entering the Mind Flayer lair.

4.5 Hour role play / Battle session 5:30 PM to 10:00PM

Party of 7 (The order of Heroes, Inc.):

It is the 22nd day of the month of Uktar (The Rotting) in the 3rd year of the Age of Enialis

Goals:

• Find the Mind Flayer lair and destroy them.
• Gather the other parts of the god Destroyer (Blade, Hilt and guard)
• Locate the Amber Sarcophagi and destroy them with the god Destroyer
• Take the sword to the Summer Queen and have her destroy it.
• White Dragon at Purple Rocks

Release the goat!

Rolen felt a mental ping and cast his Demiplane spell to let Luigi out of the Library. Luigi ran to a corner to relieve himself and then casually greeted the party. The Arcanaloth sat in the library on the floor with a large number of marbles around him and waved at the party. Luigi complained that the Arcanaloth has a bad odor. Lucky cleaned up Luigi and the party explained to Luigi the overall situation and their current goal of clearing out the Mind Flayer lair.

Fixing the console.

Examining the console, Anna cast identify and found the panel was not magical. She began investigating the panel carefully and using her thief’s tools she started putting the wires back into the bottom of the panel. Working with Rolen who was flipping switches they spent about an hour working on it. Anna asked Lucky for some gum, but Lucky didn’t have any. Luigi coughed up some sticky gooey substance from one of his stomachs, but Anna decided to use some wax to hold the wires in place instead. The panel lit up and looked like it did before.

Cornelius

While Anna was fixing the console, Tyrena and Lucky talked with Cornelius. They found out that his father (Sven) ran a shop in Silvery Moon called Sven’s Sventuring Supplies and Sven dabbled in Magic and traded in Magical reagents and such. Cornelius grew up as the son of a successful merchant but was shunned by most of the elven girls. He had a few Elven friends and simply found the elven girls beautiful and was fascinated by their grace and culture. Luigi approached Cornelius and told him “I know I don’t look like it but I’m an Elf.” Luigi provided Cornelius with some Elven pickup lines like “Of all the moons in Silvery Moon, you shine the brightest.” Cornelius told Luigi that his father Sven may be able to help with his curse.

How to use the console.

Jeter flipped the switch before that turned on the monitor and the saw a room in a cave but the Mind Flayer they saw before was not there. Anna started flipping switches and turning the knobs. The lights changed, the sphere of electrical light changed hue and sound but, in the end, they were not able to make it do anything significant. Rolen did some quick math and figured out there are over 100,000 possible combination of switches and buttons and there’s no way to brute force guess what the proper sequence would be.

An alternate solution

Jeter suggested they resurrect the Mind Flayer. Jaquette said she could cast True Resurrection and Jeter and Lucky said they could do other things also. They shackled the hands of the Mind Flayer and turned him to face the Wall. Lucky started preparing his spells. Jeter cast resurrection to bring back the Mind Flayer but in a weakened state.

Lucky cast tongues on himself and then suggestion on the Mind Flayer telling him to answer every question truthfully. Lucky tried to persuade the Mind Flayer and Rolen asked the Mind Flayer for the pass code. The Mind Flayer responded with a sequence of ancient letters. Since the buttons and switches weren’t labeled the party couldn’t enter the combination. Anna and Tyrena closed the gate door while Lucky cast Suggestion with his Lute suggesting the Mind Flayer “Turn this on for us.”

As soon he pressed in the buttons the device began humming. Jeter, knowing the suggestion has now been fulfilled cast Polymorph on the Mind Flayer but he resisted. Jaquette said, “What a great idea” and also cast polymorph. The Mind Flayer began to resist but Luigi changed his fate, and the Mind Flayer was polymorphed. The Mind Flayer, now a chicken, clucked on the floor. Jaquette picked him up. The entire door turned pitch black 15 feet high and 15 feet wide. Rolen walked through and the rest of the party followed.

In the Material Plane

The party walked through the darkness into a cave. A Mind Flayer was floating in the room and was surprised by the army walking through the portal. Rolen walked in first, saw the Mind Flayer and began slicing into him with the Blackrazor. Luigi walked in and smacked him with his staff breaking its neck. Luigi turned and saw Anna appear but the door itself was closed and was not black. The portal seemed to be one way. There was however a control panel in this plane right next to the door. The rest of the Army and the party walked in.

Tyrena sensed the presence of more Mind Flayers and Rolen saw that the Mind Flayer had a 3rd eye on its forehead, and it reeked of filth. Rolen popped the 3rd eye out and put it in his bag. They lit their torches and illuminated their daggers and Tyrena began leading the party into the cavern.

Another portal?

Tyrena followed the tracks and they ended at a Huge Iris in the middle of a very large room. There was a small control panel next to the iris and the party realized they couldn’t figure out the code. The party debated resting with the army or going on. Lucky cast Geas and told the chicken “Take me to your leader.” The chicken looked at Lucky and refused to comply and took 26 points of psychic damage. The polymorph was broken, and the Mind Flayer fell to the ground holding onto its head from the psychic pain. Rolen held Blackrazor to the Mind Flayer’s neck and said, “I think you should choose your actions carefully.”

Reluctantly, the Mind Flayer cursed and opened the iris revealing a hole in the floor. The Mind Flayer levitated down into the hole. Rolen followed down and took a couple stabs at the Mind Flayer bloodying him. In turn the Mind Flayer cast contagion on Rolen. The rest of the party jumped down through the door. Tyrena set up some repelling ropes for the army to descend. Rolen started to feel ill and used a dose of his Keoghtom’s Ointment on himself removing the disease.

Vampiric Mind Flayer Minions.

The Mind Flayer under Lucky’s Geas control led the army down a path to a door. Rolen asked him to open it and as he did, the party saw a room filled with hideous mutated Mind Flayers that looked like the Demogorgon from Stranger Things. The party told the army to stand back as they rushed to the door. The Vampiric Mind Flayers walked to the door and used their “Disrupt Psyche” feature to incapacitate Rolen, Luigi and Anna. The Vampiric Mind Flayers started attacking Jeter. Jeter cast Mind Sliver and then a fireball into the room. After casting the spell seven 50gp gems appeared at Jeter’s feet. Most of the Mind Flayers avoided some of the explosion. Rolen and Luigi broke free of the Mind Flayers disrupting psyche.

Jaquette created a ring of fire in the room and significantly burned several of the Vampiric Mind Flayers, killing 2 of them. One of the Vampiric Mind Flayer’s tried to incapacitate the party again. Jeter was incapacitated and grappled. Anna was able to break the disruption. Tyrena and Lucky made their way through the army to try to join the fray. Jaquette became incapacitated and the wall of fire went away. The Vampiric Mind Flayer started drinking Jeter’s life from him, the Mind Flayer became healed while Jeter was hurt and gained a level of exhaustion. Luigi ran in and smacked a couple of the Mind Flayers. Anna shook off the incapacitated state.

Lucky cast firebolt and killed one of the Vampiric Mind Flayers. Tyrena yelled out “duck” and took a shot with her antimatter rifle and obliterated another. A Mind Flayer tried to attack Jeter but couldn’t hit. Rolen, finally free, cast Intellect fortress on Tyrena, Jeter and himself. Luigi tried to run in and attack but couldn’t hit. Jaquette shook off her incapacitation.

Anna ran in used her action surge to cast ice knife twice, killing one of the Vampiric Mind Flayers. Lucky cast polymorph on Jeter turning him into Giant Ape. The Mind Flayers attacked the ape but couldn’t grapple him. Tyrena came in and swapped her antimatter rifle with her laser rifle and shot at one of the Mind Flayers destroying it. The Vampiric Mind Flayers again tried to incapacitate everyone but failed. Rolen moved in slashed into the Vampiric Mind Flayer with the Blackrazor and healed the undead creature. Quickly realizing his error, he switched to his crossbow and killed the creature. Luigi then ran in and started bashing the last creature with his staff and then punched it to death.

Lounging Mind Flayers

The Mind Flayer under Lucky’s Geas spell (Ergik) pressed a button and a door in the ceiling opened. He levitated up a 20-foot vertical hallway and then opened a door that went east and went in. Jaquette turned herself into a giant eagle. Anna looked at Jeter (the giant ape) and said, “Fling me.” The Giant ape tossed Anna up the hallway and in through the door. Anna landed in a room filled with Mind Flayers. Most were sitting on cushions and meditating others were focused on control panels facing the other direction.

Rolen asked Lucky to attach a rope atop so the army can get in. Lucky cast levitate upon himself and rose towards the door. Jeter as the giant ape, jumped up squeezed through the door and dashed into the room. He saw the mind flayers meditating on the cushions and let out a giant ape roar. Jaquette (as a giant eagle) flew up. Ergik pointed towards the south and told Anna, we want to go this way.

Order of Murder Heroes

Rolen grabbed ahold of Tyrena and dimensioned door up into the room, took out Blackrazor and without any provocation, slashed into one of the Mind Flayers. Luigi followed suit and ran into the room and started smacking the mind flayers with his staff. The Mind Flayer struck by Rolen stood up and pressed a button on the wall sounding a klaxon. In response to the klaxon sound an Iron Golem on the western wall was released. Seeing the predicament, Anna raised her arms and said in common, “I Surrender” as she cast protection from good and evil on herself. The Purple Mind Flayer looked at her and telepathically said “You don’t intimidate me!”

Another Mind flayer turned and looked at Rolen and telepathically said, “You are Rolen the slayer of the Elder Brain Dragon.” The rest of the Mind Flayers turned their attention on Rolen and tried to control him but Rolen resisted. Another Mind Flayer looked at the Giant ape and said, “You must be Lucky” and tried to dominate him but failed. Tyrena turned to the Iron Golem and took a couple shots at it with her laser rifle. Two more Mind Flayers tried to dominate the ape and Rolen and both failed. They looked slightly concerned and began to move to their backup plan.

Lucky cast fireball and hit 6 of the Mind Flayers. The Giant Ape started pounding on one of the Mind Flayers. Jaquette as the eagle cast a wall of fire separating most of the mind flayers from the party. The wall of fire killed one of the Mind Flayers. Ergik opened the southern door and started floating down. Rolen cast his blade of disaster and decimated one of the mind flayers and then used Blackrazor to destroy another (gaining 101 temporary HP.) Luigi ran up to the Iron Golem and stunned it with a punch.

Anna jumped backwards down the hall following Ergik. One of the Mind flayers focused on the flames and used his mind blast randomly hitting Jaquette the Eagle, Lucky and Tyrena. Tyrena was stunned and Lucky was stunned and fell down the hall 40 feet. The Mind Flayer wearing a cape walked through the flames found Rolen and said, “You killed our Elder Brain, Lord Vitiate is not happy.” He then grappled Rolen with his tentacles, but was unable to stun Rolen…
