Session 94: Escape from the Mind Flayer Lair Report

General Summary

Session 94 – Wednesday January 5, 2022 – Dual Beholder Zone

4 Hour getting beat up session 5:00 PM to 10:00PM

It is the 22nd day of the month of Uktar (The Rotting) in the 3rd year of the Age of Enialis

Goals:

Take out the Mind Flayers
Gather the other parts of the god Destroyer (Blade, Hilt and guard)
Locate the Amber Sarcophagi and destroy them with the god Destroyer
Take the sword to the Summer Queen and have her destroy it.

Where did Luigi go?

Luigi had dashed through Jaquette’s wall of fire and followed the two mind Flayers who had escaped the common room. Luigi chased them into a large room with about a dozen and a half large containers with bodies inside them in various states of Ceremorphosis. One of the mind Flayers tried to dominate Luigi but failed and then he disappeared with a popping sound. The remaining Mind Flayer cast Lightning bolt at Luigi, but Luigi dodged it and killed the remaining Mind Flayer.

Luigi spotted a large Firbolg in one of the canisters that did not appear to be transformed (yet.) He released Fergewon but didn’t recognize him as a previous member of the Order of Heroes. They opened the southern door and heard familiar screams from the western end of the hall. Fergewon mentioned that he had one of those tadpole things put into his ear but for now, he’s able to help. Luigi tried to suck the tadpole out but failed.

Meanwhile, at the battle

Due to his wild magic, Lucky polymorphed into a cat. Lucky was able to cast silent image at the bottom of the passageway so that bottom ½ of the image was in the antimagic field and not seen. A group of paladins dropped down the passageway and rushed behind the Beholder. The beholder killed 3 of them. Rolen made his final save and broke the petrification. He then began attacking the Beholder but the Blackrazor missed both strike. The Beholder’s psionic eye turned to Rolen and gave him a nasty headache.

Luigi ran into the room, seeing Tyrena’s brains being sucked out he smacked the Mind Flayer and stunned him breaking his grapple of Tyrena. Then Luigi stunned the Mind Flayer with Anna. Anna screamed out “We can’t win, retreat!” and then dashed out the exit tunnel. Jeter (possessed by an intellect devourer) tried to polymorph Luigi into a chicken but failed. Then Wild Magic hit Jeter and he lost the ability to cast a damaging spell. The Elder Brain spoke telepathically to everyone: “You should follow Anna’s lead.”

Don’t leave yet

The first group of Harpers attacked the Beholder but did very little damage. The 2nd group attacked a Mind Flayer and did a little damage. One of the group of Paladins attacked the Beholder and a 2nd group attacked a Mind Flayer. Finally freed from her grapple, Tyrena took 2 shots at a Mind Flayer and killed it. Fergewon, seeing the others aren’t leaving, called upon Liera to divinely intervene in the situation but Liera didn’t respond.

Lucky (as a cat) fell to the floor and broke the polymorph spell. Lucky climbed back into the tunnel and cast fireball and held it. The Beholder dropped the antimagic field and used his disintegration ray on Rolen but Rolen dodged it. The Beholder targeted one of the Paladins and his head exploded. The Beholder then paralyzed Rolen. The Mindwitness dropped its Antimagic field and Lucky immediately cast his fireball. The Beholder took some of the fire damage. The Mindwitness stunned one harper, paralyzed another and then Luigi dodged a slow beam. The Beholder slowed Rolen. Luigi dodged another ray from the Mindwitness and tried to stun the Mindwitness but failed. Luigi then used a flurry of blows on the Mind Flayer and stunned it. The Beholder hit Rolen with his psychic ray and left him with only 6HP remaining.

The Elder Brain isn’t happy.

With both antimagic fields down, and nobody leaving as it commanded, the young Elder Brain used its mind blast to blast the room with intense psychic damage. Only 3 Paladins were able to survive and only 3 Harpers remained. Cornelius was lost! Al turned into a pile of clover and Rolen fell unconscious. The Harpers and the Gauntlet looked to Tyrena for guidance and Tyrena told them to help Rolen. The Paladins helped Rolen and healed a few in the party.

The Mind Flayer, with his tentacles stuck in a stone Jaquette, turned to the fallen Mind Flayer and raised him from the dead. Fergewon had to use his luck blade but was able to remove his stunned condition. Lucky looked down from the ceiling, saw massive carnage, Al destroyed and Rolen coughing up blood, he Polymorphed Rolen into an adult Gold Dragon. The Beholder saw this and re-enabled his antimagic field suspending the polymorph. The Beholder bit at Rolen and missed. The Mindwitness used his disintegration ray onFergewon and brought him close to death.

A Dragon joins the fight

Rolen the dragon breathed fire on the enemies (and Luigi.) Luigi dodged it and the beholder dodged some of it. Rolen the dragon then flew behind the Beholder and Elder Brain. Luigi started attacking the Mindwitness and did a flurry of blows against the resurrected Mind Flayer and killed it again. The Beholder then caused Rolen the Dragon to fall asleep. The Harpers did some healing on Fergewon and Luigi. Tyrena remained stunned by the Elder Brain Mind Blast. The Mind Flayer Mind blasted Fergewon, stunned him and left him with a mere 2HP. The Beholder hit Rolen a few times hurting the dragon considerably and then started to petrify him. The Mindwitness joined and used all its attacks on Rolen the Dragon.

Slowed, Restrained, and bloodied, Rolen the dragon used his frightening presence and frightened the Beholder, the Mind Flayer and the Mindwitness. Rolen was able to break the paralysis and again, avoiding being turned into stone. Luigi stunned the Mindwitness and ran past the Mind Flayer (hitting him along the way.) The Beholder again caused Rolen the bloodied Dragon to fall asleep and then moved towards the exit looking for Lucky. The Beholder killed a Harper, made Tyrena Fall asleep and then killed another Harper (leaving 1.)

Ripley! We’re leaving!

Luigi looked around and realized how bad things are. He grabbed Tyrena and then using the black amulet teleported out of the room up into the Mind Flayer common room. Lucky asked, “What’s going on?” Luigi replied, “Everyone’s dying, the big furry one is stunned, the Dragon keeps falling asleep and Jaquette is still a statue.” The Mind Witness blasted Rolen the dragon with a psychic ray and woke it up, leaving the dragon with a mere 15 hp. Jeter (controlled by the Intellect Devourer) cast confusion on the dragon.

The lone remaining Harper healed the stunned Fergewon and then ran towards the rope to escape. The 3 remaining members of the Order of the Gauntlet surrounded Fergewon. One blessed him and the other 2 smited the remaining Mind Flayer. Tyrena was finally able to break her stunned condition. Lucky walked down the tube towards the room. The beholder moved towards the tunnel looked up and saw Lucky. Lucky avoided the slow and disintegration rays but was hit by the frightening ray. The Mindwitness used its eye rays on Rolen the dragon and hit with its petrification ray and then its psychic ray. The dragon polymorph was ended and Rolen was badly bloodied and confused. Rolen quickly broke the petrification and the confusion.

An epic rescue

Luigi jumped down into the room and stunned the Beholder. He then went to the Mindwitness and stunned it too! Jeter walked across the room towards a lever on the wall. As he approached Rolen he pulled out his dagger and tried to stab him but missed. The Elder brain then cast feeble mind on Rolen reducing him to 1 hp. One of the paladins was able to kill the remaining mind flayer attached to the stoned Jaquette.

Tyrena looked down the hall and saw the beholder. She rolled over on her belly, looked down and enraged, she readied the double barrel antimatter rifle. She pulled the trigger gently and watched in slow motion as the anti-matter charge blasted through the center of the beholder and impacted the floor below, taking the beholder down. With an amazing show of strength, Tyrena pulled the harper holding onto the rope all the way up.

Fergewon was able to break his stun. Lucky ducked down into the room cast a fireball at the Mindwitness, hurting Fergewon. Rolen, with a feeble mind, lifted the Blackrazor and sliced the Mindwitness in two. Luigi walked to the possessed Jeter and said, “Sorry” as he smacked him with his staff, knocking him down. The Intellect devourer appeared next to the corpse of Jeter and Luigi quickly used his 2nd attack to destroy it. Luigi grabbed the stupefied Rolen and took him out of the room.

The Elder Brain tried to cast Eyebite on Fergewon but, Fergewon resisted. The Remaining members of the Order of the Gauntlet dragged Jaquette’s stoned body towards the exit and looked for the rope. Tyrena lowered the rope and the paladins tied it to the statue of Jaquette. Tyrena had the strength to pull it up but didn’t quite stabilize it. The statue was raised with a cracked leg. The Elder brain used its mind blast and killed one of the remaining paladins. Luigi ran back down into the room, grabbed the body of Jeter, and ran out with the remaining paladin.

Jeter cast greater restoration on Jaquette and turned her stone back into flesh. Luigi cast magnificent mansion and the party went in to rest.
