General Summary

Session 98 – Wednesday February 9th, 2022 – Voyage to the Purple Rocks.

4.5 Hour role playing/naval battle session 5:30 PM to 10:15 PM

Trip to Waterdeep

Lucky asked Cornelius to join him and Tyrena as they went to Waterdeep to check on T-Rechs cigars. Lucky wanted to find Fiew Lau from Zhǎo xìngyùn and get some of his items back. They used the Harpers transportation circle and went to Waterdeep. Arriving at the cigar shop, Lucky notice that the name Zhǎo xìngyùn was scratched off the sign. Going in they found Tamino behind the counter. Tyrena and Tamino greeted each other with great enthusiasm. Tamino explained that the Zhǎo xìngyùn organization simply pulled out and they haven’t been seen for over a week.

Tyrena asked how die Zauberflöte was going and Tamino was proud to have the lead. He invited them to a showing in a couple days and got them orchestra seats. Cornelius was very excited. They discussed business, purchased a few cigars and Lucky made a new sign for the shop that was awesome. When the time came, Tyrena dressed in an amazing red dress and the show was spectacular.

Tyrena mentioned that she wanted to create a few more flash bangs and Tamino said he had created some for his props team for the opera. Together Tyrena and Tamino created 2 more and Tamino gave Tyrena 4 that he had already created. Tyrena gave Tamino 100gp for spending money as he was going on tour and Lucky did too. They bid Tamino farewell and returned to Neverwinter.

Final prep

Anna bought a spyglass, and the party spent the last night onboard the ship while the ship building company completed the fine details. Lucky did some fishing. Tyrena assembled the teams manning the weapons. Capt. Pryor came abord with 3 guests. He introduced Capt. Quirk of the SS Consolation prize along with Mr. Spork and Lt. Solo carrying a large red cup. They and the party went under deck to speak. Capt. Quirk explained that he has heard that 2 captains will be coming after the Order of Heroes. Capt. Zul of the Bloody Hangman and Capt. Red Readdy of the ship the Red Pirate.

Capt. Pryor provided the OoH a set of signaling flags along with a little booklet explaining how to signal each other. They agreed to stay within 100 feet so they can see each other’s flags. The Crazy Suzan will follow the Charon and will signal if they see something from the rear. Tyrena gave Capt. Pryor some cigars and Capt. Pryor was very grateful. The party reviewed their orders and prepared for sailing.

The morning

Vofer Jones of Smith and Jones Shipwright joined the crew at dawn. The mages spent the night completing the final touches on the ship. Vofer escorted everyone around the ship explaining all the features and explaining to Lucky all the wonderful abilities of the ship’s mage. Lucky wasn’t impressed. Anna dove into the water and inspected the underside and was impressed with the workmanship. The officers and the crew were very happy with the quality of the ship. Crowds of people were gathering. Vofer handed Tyrena a bottle of champaign.

The officers discussed the options of just sailing below water and follow the Crazy Suzan. Tyrena suggested they could submerge when battle occurs. They finalized their heading and Capt. Pryor left the Charon to go to the Crazy Suzan. Jaquette gathered a flock of doves all over the ship. Tyrena smashed a champaign bottle against the side of the ship, the doves all flew into the sky and the ship was off.

Setting sail to the West.

The Charon left the port of Neverwinter and headed due West into a thick fog bank. Jaquette cast a spell to disperse it for a bit, but the fog was too thick and the spell too short lived. The Crazy Suzan stayed close. Anna took her place in the Crow’s nest. One of the sailors (Mr. Orange) said out loud, “Fog on the maiden voyage is a bad omen.” Tyrena scolded him with, “I suppose women on a ship are bad luck too?” The Sailor was quite intimidated and went back to the rigging. They slowed to 2/3rd speed in the fog.

Lucky finally caught a fish, a tiny fish that could provide a meal for one person. He took the tiny fish and put it on the hook and cast it back to catch another fish. After about an hour of sailing the fog cleared up and they went full speed ahead.

Anna spotted Stinky Pete casting the Sending Spell. Anna cast Counter spell and Stinky Pete looked confused. Anna jumped down from the Crow’s next and landed right in from of Stinky Pete and confronted him. Stinky Pete said that he was just informing his wife that he was okay. Anna told him to be sure to get permission before sending spells. Stinky Pete asked for permission to send a message to his wife and Anna approved as she climbed back into the Crow’s Nest. All Anna heard was “quickly” and “west.”

A Chill from the north

The temperature dropped about 20 degrees very quickly, and the crew became uncomfortable and unhappy. Seeing the predicament, Tyrena slipped into a tight fighting, low cut aerobics outfit and ordered the crew to do some calisthenics. This seemed to warm up the crew and increase their interest in getting to work with Tyrena. Most of the crew struggled with simple exercises and as they were doing pushups Tyrena put her foot on the Back of Mr. Orange. The crew’s tone shifted to that of obedience and respect. Tyrena finished off the exercises with some stretching. After the exercise, the entire crew was very willing to obey any order given by Tyrena.

With the help of Jaquette, Lucky caught a nice sea bass, and he threw it at Mr. Orange knocking him prone. The fish immediately disappeared. Mr. Orange was left puzzled.

One Ship, Two Ship…

Anna spotted a ship in the West. Using her spyglass, she spotted a skull and crossbones flag on its bow. She turned to warn Capt. Pryor on the Crazy Suzan but saw the Sailor in the crow’s nest of the Crazy Suzan signaling that there was a ship approaching from the East. Anna yelled out to the crew what she saw. The Crazy Suzan signaled they should split. Lucky yelled out the command “Dive”

The ship submerged quickly, and the water flooded over the crew. They were all very uncomfortably at first. It took a moment for everyone to get used to having water in their lungs. The crew quickly realized that the ship grated them a magical water breathing ability and they ran to their stations to sail underwater. They saw the Crazy Suzan turnabout and head east. The Charon made a quick turnabout and lucky increased the speed of the ship to catch up to the Crazy Suzan.

Tyrena left the other ship coming from the west “A little surprise,” an explosive barrel to float to the surface. They saw the Crazy Suzan and the enemy ship approaching from the East. Jaquette cast a spell to Control Water and created a whirlpool that started damaging the enemy ship. Tyrena began to prepare the weapons to attack, and Anna shouted out “Use the Harpoon and stay under water to maintain our surprise.”

Focus on one at a time.

The Crazy Suzan fired all its ballista at the enemy ship seriously damaging its hull. The hull of the enemy ship started to bubble. Anna called out “weight the shot” but the crew was a bit confused and thought she said “wait.” Anna grabbed a piece of wood and catapulted it at the hull of the enemy ship. The Crazy Suzan continued to fire at it. Tyrena had the crew fire another harpoon and Jaquette’s whirlpool did some more damage. Capt. Pryor finished off the ship with a few more Ballista shot.

Jaquette told the sharks in the area to take care of the crew and Anna ordered crew to collect flotsam and jetsam. The crew picked up a full store of Balista Bolts. Lucky ordered the crew to turn the ship about and close in on the other enemy surface ship.

Focus on the second ship.

Lucky called out to have the ship surface and Anna had the ship “Brace.” The ship broke through the surface, and they spotted the larger enemy ship in the distance closing fast. Tyrena had the crew fire the Ballista and it hit the enemy ship. The Capt. yelled reload at the mangonel and it made 2 attacks hitting the enemy ship. Lucky started prancing round the deck singing, “I’ve got a jar of dirt.” The crew was inspired!

Several shots from the enemy hit the hull of the Charon weakening the magical shield. Anna focused fire on the enemy’s Balista and it was hit straight on. Tyrena peered over the side of the ship looking for the “surprise.” Anna spotted it 10 feet away from the ship and telekinetically picked it up and placed it carefully into the mangonel. The crew carefully reset the Mangonel preparing to fire. Jaquette cast tidal wave at the enemy ship striking it head on. The ship capsized!

Spoils of war

The enemy Vessel lay upside down in the ocean with its crew scrambling to climb up to the hull. The Officers of the Charon, still flush from battle, contemplated how to destroy the enemy when the wise Eustice Thornhall reminded the captain “In most cases there is an unspoken law of the sea; sailors who surrender are typically rehired under similar terms by those who take the ship. Officers are either killed outright, marooned on uninhabited islands, or set adrift in a rowboat without provisions. It is unusual for the entire crew to be slaughtered once surrender has been signaled. Usually for the simple reason that someone needs to crew the captured ship in order for it to operate if it is to be taken as a prize. It is up to the officers of the victorious ship to decide what to do with a crippled ship. But consider: What do you want your reputation to be within the pirating world? How can that reputation best be spread?”

Anna went to talk to Stinky Pete. She pulled out the invisible dagger and pined his coat to the deck and began to interrogate him…
