Captain Droit stationed himself and his men outside of Ealla, having a Thunder Mage in the group use Thunder Magic to make loud noises that cancelled out the music of the Bards. Meanwhile, he kept soldiers right on the edge of the Tamd peninsula, examining the poison to hopefully find a cure for it.
The Main Front
As for the Captain Commander and his Second-in-Command, Wallis Nalo and Arandon Vonar, they often fought in and around Yirthum against Chief Laarthan Durzire. But Laarthan had help. After all, Yirthum was the only village with full loyalty to Zephys and Kilprax, and so Kilprax was often around in battle to help against Wallis Nalo and Arandon Vonar. Still, Nalo's expert military tactics and Vonar's willingness to do whatever it takes to win made it difficult for Kilprax to utilize the power he had. Instead, he was forced to also use his immense intellect as the smartest man to ever live on Totania.
Captain Commander Wallis Nalo by Jarhed
Nalo was trouble for Kilprax, though he was never able to defeat the Grand Wizard in single combat. Because Nalo knew the greatest way to stop Kilprax was not to defeat him, after all Wallis Nalo thought that was impossible. No, the best way to defeat Kilprax Ilidal was to annoy him.
Therefore, Wallis Nalo would normally not launch largescale invasions of Yirthum. Instead, he'd send Arandon Vonar with a small group of soldiers to attack some Yirthum troops, light Yirthum on fire, or cause some other disturbance. Anything that would provoke Kilprax.
After that, he'd then invade with a full force on the tired Yirthumites, often attacking from two sides. First, Arandon would invade from one side of the village, then Wallis would lead the remaining troops to Yirthum on the other side.
Kilprax was embarassed quite a few times in the war by Nalo's strategy, which sent Kilprax into a rage where he would simply attack any Elves he found. It is said Kilprax grew from disliking the Elves to hating them over the course of the war, and much of this can be attributed to Wallis Nalo's plan to uproot Kilprax and annoy the everloving shit out of him. Stalling Kilprax and Yirthum while the other villages were meant to fall to the other Captains.
However, there was not a single village that fell. Kilprax Ildial and the Village Chiefs would not allow even one loss that great.
Great Leadership
Every front in the Draco-Elvish war has at least two heroes on every side. Most of all were the leaders, who are said to be some of the greatest in both Elvish and Draconian history. The Captains and Chiefs all were at the top of their games, but while the Elves worked together, the Chiefs were separate, and did not have a leader.
King Arazion Nerifir was the perfect force to combat this splintered society of Draconians, as he was tactically more of a trickster. He exploited their weaknesses and worked incredibly well with Captain Commander Wallis Nalo, who knew how to turn Arazion's orders into full tactics. But Arazion was also great at changing the Elven perspective on the war, keeping morale up by convincing the Elves that this was exactly what they wanted and needed to do. Not fighting honorablly, but exploiting the weaknesses of their opponents.
"When we fought the Dwarves, we fought them head-on. They beat us back. Why? Because they were ready for that, since their strength is in forging, they wanted a head-on fight. These Draconians are strong in magic, and so they want the same. So we will not give them that. We will give them our strength instead. Our clever minds will win this war, not our blades."— Arazion Nerifir
But Arazion also had help from another person who was an exemplar of leadership. Elnahil Shirno convinced Arazion that they needed to learn magic to combat the Draconians, in part because Elnahil had always wanted to learn magic, but still. Tobor Tuldad taught them what he knew, and Elnahil discovered other things on his own alongside many other Captains and Arazion himself.
Elnahil led a special squad of soldiers who were all mages. Their main job was not combat, but instead developing new spells to use in battle against the Draconians. Their base was the village Walmil, which would one day be known as
Waire. Elnahil is responsible for how widespread magic is in Elven society today.
Each of the Elven Captains were also fighting to the best of their ability, and it is said that the Captains of the Draco-Elvish War are some of the best Captains in Elven history.
However, the Chiefs of the Draconian Villages were also one of the greatest sets in Draconian history. Leaders who truly cared about not just themselves, but their people and the nation that Kilprax had established.
Oldruuk Uphal by andreaspsillos4
Cruldor Daxur of Bortan was second in combat only to Kilprax Ildial himself, and he was able to lead his people with great ferocity. The Elves lost the most soldiers anytime they attacked Bortan, or anytime that Cruldor invaded the Elven Forest.
Many had initially said that Aampeal Ildial of Evity was only made Chief over Forthash Saxan because Aampeal was related to Kilprax. However, in the war, Forthash showed more cowardice, fearing an attack on or from the Elves would destroy Evity. Aampeal, however, was willing to sacrifice everything to stop the Elven invaders. After all, Evity was filled with necromancers. Anything they lost could come back.
Oldruuk Uphal of Tamd was a genius, one of which who often claimed to be nearly as smart as Kilprax (though this is, likely, untrue). However, he also placed second in terms of combat in his class, making him an equally skilled combatant. He was willing to exploit his enemies weaknesses just like the Elves were.
Driarderoc Wulvull of Ealla, on the other hand, was much more focused on spectacle and taking the Elves by surprise. She was happy to draw more Elven soldiers to Ealla for a fight, because she knew that they would not expect what she threw at them. No one expects the Eallan soldiers, as they think Bards are only good for parties. Bards, however, can make a wonderful army.
Laarthan Durzire of Yirthum, however, was one of the more capable Chiefs for one reason and one reason alone: she knew when to hand off command to Kilprax Ildial. She did not rely solely on her own command at the start of the war, which made Yirthum such a strong holdout for the Draconians for so long.
In the end, though, it was none of these Chiefs that turned the tides alone. It was Kilprax Ildial, the Grand Wizard, who was sick and tired of his people being divided again. So, during the war, as the Elves were attacking the villages, he flew around and took all of the Chiefs to Zephys as their villages were raided. Many complained, but he simply said:
"Of course your village will be destroyed. It would have been if you were there, as well. But it doesn't have to be. We are not each a resident of our village and our village alone. I am not Evitian, and you are not Tamdian. You are not Bortanni, or Eallan, or a Yirthumite. You are Draconians... so act like like it. Act together. That is how we win, not divided, but united as one people!"— Kilprax Ildial
This was the first true time the Draconians were united together, and would be the last time for over a thousand years until
Nalrik Tilrak founded the
Southern Elone Treaty Organization in 547. Therefore, Kilprax (alongside Nalrik Tilrak) is considered to be the greatest leader in Draconian history for his uniting power that broke cultural boundaries that had been set up long ago, that seemed unbreakable.
United We Stand
Kilprax returned the Chiefs to their villages, but knew that some would not stay there. Aampeal Ildial, of course, cared not if his village was destroyed. So immediately, he left Evity with his troops, making their way to Bortan to help Cruldor Daxur.
With the combined forces of Bortan and Evity, Captain Génial was unable to withstand it and was killed in battle. Aampeal even raised him from the dead simply so Cruldor could kill him a second time for the people of Bortan and Evity to witness, as well as to use it as a warning for the Elves. Aampeal then used Génial's body to fight back Elves when he resurrected him a second time.
As for Driarderoc Wulvull, she decided to leave Ealla behind. For the first and only time, the Tamdians led by Oldruuk Uphal allowed Eallan forces past the poison peninsula. They used this, then to draw Elven soldiers into the poison so they would die, then having Captain Droit make it over so that Driarderoc and Oldruuk could tag-team him, with some help from their Tamdian classmate Cramtel Nurdesh, who led the assault against Droit's forces with the Eallan Neforian Questus. With the combined force of Ealla and Tamd, in one of the few times they ever teamed up, they were unstoppable and Droit was sent flying by Driarderoc into the poison sea around Tamd, with it being unclear which killed him: drowning, poison, or Driarderoc's magic.
Helle by Jarhed
Kilprax had even managed to convince
Helle, his Goddess, to help him. After his betrayal of her brother Phrixus's greatest soldier, Kath, Helle was more willing to hear Kilprax out. And so, Kilprax and his Chiefs rode into battle on the backs of Dragon Lords.
The Dragon Lords and the Chiefs who rode on them were:
- Fraeton the Usurper - Kilprax Ildial
- Zome, Lord of Red - Cruldor Daxur
- Reoma the Wretched - Aampeal Ildial
- Meghorranth the Cunning - Laarthan Durzire
- Nammat the Unseen - Oldruuk Uphal
- Inrilyth the Hushed - Driarderoc Wulvull
One Dragon Lord, however, disobeyed Helle. Jarrur, Lord of the Dark, the Purple Dragon Lord, sided with the Dark Elves. Upon seeing his brothers and sisters fighting the Elves, Jarrur sent the Dark Elves to aid their High Elven brothers. In seeing this solidarity, the Wood Elves stepped in as well.
It is said that Captain Commander Wallis Nalo defeated a Dragon Lord. Some say he did so with the help of Arandon Vonar and Arazion Nerifir, with other stories even saying Elnahil Shirno aided them. The Dragon Lord they were specifically said to have defeated was the weakest of them all: Nammat the Unseen. Still, it was an impressive feat, even if Oldruuk then helped Nammat escape before he could be killed.
Kath the Eternal was forced to step in, prolonging the war longer as he tried to stop the Dragon Lords. Due to Kath's interference, the Dragon Lords caused more destruction than they did death, as Kath protected the people, though it extended the war longer than it needed to go. After some time, Kath convinced Phrixus to get Helle to give up on helping in the war, and all Dragon Lords fled.
All but Fraeton, who was now not only Kilprax's mount for battle, but was his friend. Fraeton grew a hatred for the Elves that would not go away. Fraeton is known to have said:
"If I could kill every Elf in Totania myself, I would. As I cannot, I stand beside Kilprax as he does so. It is a worthy compromise, as he is the only one I would call my superior in this entire world."— Fraeton the Usurper
Now, not only were all of the Draconian Villages united, but it was the first time all three Elven ethnicities had worked together. Wood Elves were more neutral towards High Elves at this time, but Dark Elves hated them. For them to team up now was a miracle that showed just how divisive a figure Kilprax was to all Elf-kind.
Divided We Fall
At this point, Kilprax was confident in his people, so he focused more on the students of the Magic College and his work as a Professor and Grand Wizard. This, however, left Yirthum without much support, as the other villages thought Kilprax was helping them out. This led to a simultaneous attack of Yirthum and Zephys, where Wallis Nalo attacked Yirthum as Elnahil Shirno invaded Zephys.
As Kilprax was distracted, Wallis Nalo and Arandon Vonar teamed up, and together they were finally able to, alongside Satrin Myathuluc, kill Laarthan Durzire. This was the turning point of the war, when a key ally for the Draconians was taken out and replaced with one of the Elven allies, as Satrin Myathuluc took over as Chief and Yirthum became a staging point for the Elven army. Due to Yirthum's position at the heart of Draconian Territory, it split off Bortan and Zephys from the other Draconian forces.
The Shirno Plan
Shirno's invasion was a simple one. He invaded with his best mages, sneaking into the Magic College that he was never allowed into. Here, he set off a spell that killed the entire third year class, the Class of -736. After all, Shirno had an idea. A way to get Kilprax's attention drawn away from the war so they could take the Villages.
His plan was simple: use his mage team as distractions. Kilprax was an intelligent man, and he knew that Elven mages would be able to spread magic to the Elves. He wanted to keep it as centralized as he could in Draconian Territory. So Elnahil had his squad of mages, and each of them pledged their lives to him. Elnahil had each one travel somewhere away from the major battles in the war, knowing Kilprax would go out and chase after them.
Kilprax was not dumb enough to let this necessarily stop him, though. He still did help in battle, seeing through Shirno's plan. Still, it is a common tactic even in modern Totanian military procedures to use the Shirno Plan, distracting the main commander of the enemy's forces with a diversion so the war can be won while they are not looking.Goddess Fight
What cannot be undestimated in this entire ordeal is what this war was ultimately about: the Gods.
The Goddess of the Draconians, Helle, is the Goddess of Greed and Envy. The Goddess of the Elves, Selene, is known as the Jealous Goddess. The two are known rivals, often clashing on many things.
Many of the major commanders on the Draconian side (aside from Cruldor Daxur and Laarthan Durzire) were devout followers of Helle, including Kilprax Ildial. This is likely where a large part of the hatred for Elves came from, which fueled the war.
All of the Elves involved in the war followed Selene. This is why they were so ready and willing to fight the Draconians: it was in their religion to want to do so.
This was when the Gods were more readily able to manifest on Totania, and so it is said that Helle and Selene themselves fought in the war in their avatar forms. There is no direct evidence, with some saying this is either propaganda or myth, but there is belief in the two religions that their Goddesses helped directly in the war beyond blessings and troops. At least some Angels are said to have intervened in the battles against each other.
The Plague of Elnahil
Arazion Nerifir had gathered the more scholarly members of Shirno's mage team, including Elnahil himself, as well as Tobor Tuldad, in the village of Walmil. Here, they went over strategy. Even distracting Kilprax was not enough, he was too strong. He would stop at nothing to protect the Draconian people, and there was nothing that could stop him. He simply went along with their distractions because he knew he could.
Selene by Jarhed
Arazion begged them to find a way to kill Kilprax. He needed it, as he knew that soon enough they would have no mages to distract Kilprax with, and he would kill the rest of their Captains. After that, Arazion figured Kilprax would destroy Camor like he did Faen Belanore.
This is where Elnahil stepped in. He told Arazion and Tobor to leave, saying that there was a way they could kill Kilprax. A special spell that he had an idea to make: a disease. Contagious and fatal. Tobor stayed around Walmil, wanting to see it in action, while Arazion fled back to Camor.
In the depths of Walmil, Elnahil Shirno developed his spell with the help of his council of mages. A plague that infected them all. The others died instantly, and Tobor stayed a distance away as Shirno called out for him to send a message with his fireworks. To tell Kilprax to meet him in Evity.
The End of Ildial
Kilprax saw the warning and challenge from Shirno. He cared not that it came from Tobor Tuldad. Instead, he immediately flew to Evity and had Aampeal evacuate the entire village. They all fled to the nearby Ealla as Kilprax landed to find there were no Elven soldiers. There was only one man waiting for him:
Elnahil Shirno.
Finally, it was time for their duel.
Kilprax asked Shirno if he was really prepared to fight the most powerful man in the world. Kilprax said:
"I know everything there is to know about everything. I have studied for thousands of years to unlock the secrets of life, magic, and the universe itself. Gods tremble before me, the great Dragon Lords bow to my will... and yet you have been a thorn in my side. A pathetic Elf with no power but persistence. There is nothing you can do against my might. Still, you challenge me?"— Kilprax Ildial
Elnahil, however, only laughed and replied:
"Aye."— Elnahil Shirno
The fight between the two seminal mages, the men who introduced magic study to their people, went as one may expect. Kilprax toyed with Elnahil, his hatred often getting the better of him as he let Elnahil get hits in on him while Kilprax waited. It did nothing to the immortal Kilprax, of course, but still, he enjoyed it.
Kilprax did not use a single spell in this fight. He knew that was exactly what Shirno wanted, to be taken down by magic. Kilprax instead only used spells to counter Elnahil, especially the greatest power of a mage: Counterspell. With Counterspell, he showed Elnahil Shirno how outclassed he truly was against Kilprax Ildial.
Elnahil Shirno expected this. After Kilprax had used up his ultimate spell, Shirno began a spell. The Disease spell he had made in Walmil. With this spell, he fully infected himself now. Kilprax did not bother to do anything, believing it to be a simple spell that wouldn't work on him due to his immortality. This was not the case.
Kilprax's immortality come from within, from the Portal in his brain where magic itself originated. Attacking him from within, therefore, had a small chance of hurting him. And with this spell, which Elnahil had worked for so long to create with some of the greatest Elven minds, it did its job. A disease began to grow, and Elnahil saw this when Kilprax coughed up blood.
Elnahil knew it was over. Whatever happened next, he had won. He had defeated the most powerful man to ever live, and so, he took a seat on a bench overlook Lashmur Lake, which stood between the villages of Evity and Ealla.
The Witness
One may wonder how there are such detailed accounts of the duel between Kilprax Ildial and Elnahil Shirno, as both died in the battle. However, this is all thanks to the one man who stayed a far enough distance to see it all and keep safe. The man with senses better than his skill. Witnessing the duel is the one of the greatest claims to fame for the Draconian known as Tobor Tuldad, though he only did so because he was too scared to intervene.
Tobor was a fireworks expert, having Impossible Magic that allowed him to make fireworks. For this, he had magically had his hearing fixed many times. This not only meant he was able to hear, but even from a distance he was able to hear incredibly well what the two said.
It would be through this story and his witnessing of the events that Tobor would convince everyone he was fit for the position of Grand Wizard, despite being unqualified in nearly every other area.
Elnahil even invited Kilprax to sit beside him as they both died together. He figured it to be a fitting end for the two greatest pioneers of magic, to die together by the side of a lake as their brains destroyed themselves.
Kilprax, however, did not think this. He knocked Elnahil off of the bench and decided to kill him right there and then. Not with a spell... but with his bare hands. At the side of Lashmur Lake, Kilprax Ildial beat Elnahil Shirno to death, then tossing his remains for the Sea Monster of Lashmur Lake to eat.
Kilprax Ildial spent a full hour investigating what was happening in his brain, and ultimately came to the conclusion that there was no cure, or at least that the cure would take far too long to make. He looked out to Ealla, where the Eallans and Evitians were staying as he dealt with this problem, and smiled. That was the future of the Draconian people there. He trusted them.
In the end, Kilprax Ildial laughed at the absurdity of the situation, but in truth he admired everyone involved. His final words were:
"A spell even I don't know? Maybe you Elves... and other races are mages after all. To make an incurable disease? I wish I had 1000 more years left, to study all this. Magic... really is incredible!"— Kilprax Ildial
After Tobor Tuldad revealed Kilprax's death, the Draconian forces were trying their best to fight to avenge him. But due to the split of the territory after Yirthum was taken, they were splintered and unable to coordinate.
Arazion Nerifir, with Tobor Tuldad and Wallis Nalo by his side, invaded and captured Zephys. He threatened to destroy the Magic College and, out of respect for Kilprax's legacy, the Chiefs surrendered and bent the knee to Arazion. The Draco-Elvish War ended in -737, 3 years after it had begun.
Result
The most obvious thing to happen at the end of the war was the death of the two great mages Kilprax Ildial and Elnahil Shirno, as well as Chief Laarthan Durzire and Captains Droit and Génial. This led to successors being chosen for them.
Tuldad
Kilprax Ildial's successor, and the second Grand Wizard, was chosen by Arazion. It was his most loyal Draconian follower: Tobor Tuldad.
This led to the most major changes from the Draco-Elvish War. Changes made by Tobor and Arazion to Draconian society after the Elves won. These changes include:
- Anyone being allowed to go to the Magic College, not just Draconians, to honor Elnahil Shirno's legacy.
- Yirthum becoming a proxy state for the Elves, still technically under Draconian control, but having to answer to the Elven King and the Elven Guard.
- With Satrin Myathuluc, a very unimpressive mage at their head, Yirthum became known as the Weak Village. This was intentionally done by the Elves to destroy Yirthum's reputation, as it had previously been founded as the most loyal village that would strengthen Draconian unity.
- Elven influence in many areas, especially in Yirthum and the many Draconian nobles from all over Draconian Territory, who embraced Elven culture to fit in.
- The Noble Council of Draconians was expanded to include a Noble Head to lead them, giving it to Yirthum so the Elves could control the council. This also gave the Noble Council more power, as they now had the power to choose the next Grand Wizard.
- Ealla became a bit of a laughing stock for much of Draconian Territory, as they produced Tobor. Ealla publically disowned him, saying he was no longer an Eallan citizen, but their reputation still fell.
- The Villages became more hostile towards each other, as they had no real unifying force. They would not unify again for over a thousand years.
The Chiefs
Oldruuk Uphal and Cruldor Daxur were believed to have begun planning a coup against Tobor, with Tamd and Bortan working together. However, the two mysteriously died on the exact same night and their
Successors stopped the plans.
Oldruuk's successor, Vilthac Nimphonker, furthered Tamd isolationist practices after Oldruuk's death and Tobor's victory. Tamd would remain in relative isolation from Draconian politics for a long time after this.
Cruldor's successor made a new job for the Chiefs of Bortan: to oppose the Grand Wizard at all costs. If the Grand Wizard did something the Chief of Bortan deemed to be a bad decision, the Chief would oppose it. And in the case of the Grand Wizard taking things too far, the Chief would kill them and all of Bortan would help.
Aampeal Ildial mourned the death of his ancestor, but decided the best thing to do was hide Kilprax's body from the Elves. To hold it for future use later, so a powerful necromancer could one day use him to strike back. Aampeal was patient, though he would eventually die of a disease just like Kilprax. Some say this disease was made by the Elves to kill Aampeal, though others call this a rumor to make Aampeal seem more heroic like Kilprax.
As for the final Chief of Kilprax, Driarderoc Wulvull, she would write many songs in honor of the heroes of the war. The Elves tried to stop her, even Tobor tried to stop her, but she had no sympathy for them and did not listen. She did not care who did what, she would always fight back for the Grand Wizard who got her where she was. She would die of a heart attack while performing a song in honor of Oldruuk.
Satrin Myathuluc, the traitorous Chief of Yirthum, was often attacked on the street. He was only protected by the Elven Guard who he stationed in Yirthum. This set a precedent, as the Elven Guard would stay in Yirthum to keep watch. Satrin would ultimately be assassinated by a passerby on the street with an enchanted dagger. The assassin would go unnamed, though many hailed them as a hero, gifting them the Draconian name "The Dagger."
Aftermath
Fraeton the Usurper would hide away in the Elven Forest, where he would continue plotting against the Elves. Many problems in Elven society throughout history are due to Fraeton's efforts to undermine their society.
Captain Arandon Vonar was recommended by Captain Commander Wallis Nalo after the events of the war. Arandon would become Wallis's successor, and would be hailed as a war hero despite only really doing what Wallis ordered him to do.
Wallis Nalo himself would get a big head after his achievements in the Draco-Elvish War, but would ultimately die in a Dwarven surprise attack by the
Silver Angels Squad.
As for Arazion Nerifir, he was called "
The Assassin King" for what he did, killing an unkillable man. He took much of Elnahil's credit, as he had adopted Elnahil as his very own son. This set a precedent that Arazion's own son, Zenster, would have trouble living up to, giving him the title "
The Troubled King" in turn.
This war was the largest war on record, and while it was not the longest, it certainly took a major toll on the entire world itself. Even those far away felt the impact of Kilprax Ildial's death, Arazion's capture of Zephys, and the Dragon Lord battles. Many Grand Wizards have tried and failed to live up to Kilprax's legacy, but in truth all he wanted was for the Draconian people to be safe and united. That is the only legacy he wishes.
