Hunting the Bonehunter Empress

A fable warning Denironian children to have achievable ambitions and to be careful when hunting.
Listen carefully, children. You know our planet is dangerous. You know the creatures, the plants, and the terrain are deadly in their own ways. But this terror is far more dangerous than the rest.   Bonehunters have prowled our planet since the Ancients arrived, hunting in packs or on their own. Each group is led by a queen and the rest of the Bonehunters are hunters. Each pack has its own territory and nest. A group of ten or so nests is ruled by a king. While many Denironians have seen a queen, the kings are much harder to find.   Bonehunters have neither souls nor minds. The hierarchy they take is simply instinct…and magic. For there is one Bonehunter with both a mind and a soul. She is the deadliest being on this planet.   The Bonehunter Empress.   She is the one who rules them all. Her body is a Bonehunter but her mind is Denironian. She speaks our language and the language of her species. She is both a beast and a hunter, the greatest predator of all. She cannot be defeated.   No one knows exactly where the empress resides, only that she has a nest with nearly a hundred guards, all prowling and snarling to keep away intruders. She has had children who have become kings and queens and have died one after another. Yet she does not, for she is Eternal.   The Bonehunter Empress is not a god. She is not a monster. She is not a lie. She is as real as you or I, and out there, she still lives.   When you hunt Bonehunters for their blood, you may kill as many hunters as you wish. You may even hunt a queen or two or three. Perhaps, if you become the greatest of warriors, you may even find and kill a king. But you will never kill the empress. Find her, maybe. But you will never be strong enough to kill her.   Remember your limits, children. Do not go farther than you believe you can go.   And do not hunt the Bonehunter Empress.

Author's Notes

My brother convinced me to participate, so it looks like I'll be doing Spooktober. I think my approach is mythology and short fiction, most of which I will delete and rewrite in different templates after October.
