Frost Spirit

A type of fey that lurks in snow storms

Basic Information

Anatomy

When first encountered Frost Spirits usually resemble a small blizzard. They are almost impossible to distinquish from a real blizzard as they most commonly appear in the middle of a real one, looking like just one more flurry of snow. This form is an illusion they use to cloak themselves. Their real form is a tiny blue humanoid with pale blue skin. They typically have dark blue hair and eyes which are also blue, but several shaes lighter than their skin. Their ears are pointed like many other fey and their teeth are narrow and sharp. On their backs are wings shaped like a butterfly's but seemingly made of snowflakes.

Genetics and Reproduction

New Frost Spirits are born from the corpses of victims of these fey creatures. If a humanoid dies out in the cold after being drained of despair and fear and the corpse remains frozen for a year then a new Frost Spirit will be born from the corpse. If the corpse if thawed, eaten, or damaged then a Frost Spirit will not be formed.

Ecology and Habitats

Frost Spirits hail from the colder regions of the Feywild and they are rarely if ever seen outside places that are constantly below zero. Although a lack of heat is essential what make a place really popular with Frost spirits is an abundance of snow and preferably wind to create regular snow storms.

Dietary Needs and Habits

While thes fey creatures can survive on mundane food such as berries or meat, what they really love to consume is emotions like fear and despair. This draws them towards regions that have a population of humanoids that can be toyed with. When their preferred diet isn't available this creatures will hunt whatever creatures are mostly likely to run in fear, only killing their prey when it is too exhausted to feel any more scared.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Frost Spirits have little patience for the rules and customs that usually accompany a standard social structure. Small groups may band together to lure large groups into their traps and cut off all avenues of escape, but many will also dwell in solitude for most of their lives.   Despite their distain for social order Frost Spirits mostly owe allegiance to the less pleasant of the archfey courts. This provides them with some protection but also opens up the possibility of being sent to material plane to cause problems in communities hit with snow and ice.

Average Intelligence

Frost Spirits are at least as smart as most humaoid races (they would claim smarter). They don't practice many crafts and generally have little patience for verse with all of their intellect devoted to finding ways to lure humanoids out into the snow and ice.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

These creatures can see well with very little light, and can see patterns of heat. They are also able to sense emotions such as fear and despair from as much as 2 miles away which is their main method for finding and tracking prey.

Disappearing tracks
When a set of tracks are covered by a sudden flurry of snow, or the wind seems to be blowing in your face no matter which way you turn then it may not be by chance. These could be the work of these nasty fey as they try to get you lost. They will move marker stones, dig trenches, and build snow drifts all to lead people astray before moving in to feed on the feelings of hopelesness and despair.
