Herun Wood

A treated wood that is highly sought after for ship building.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

This wood is highly resistant to the eroding effect of water with a tough outer surface. The inner wood is softer and allows a little more flex than if it was hard throughout. The treatment of the wood ensures that the slightly softer interior won't be harmed by woodworm. The treatment also repels clinging sea life which are frequently the bane of a ship's speed.   Unfortunately the treatment also makes the wood hard to work. It needs to be rough shaped before the treatment and after treatment it requires especially resilient tools, or constant sharpening, to refine and smooth. It is also almost impossible to apply paint or stain after treatment.

History & Usage

History

Herun Wood was developed by necessity on Lephia as way of being able to build with a material that could withstand the Abyssal Storms. Some of the development was accidental, such as finding fallen branches untouched in a pool of tainted water, while some were more deliberate.   The wood was used as a building material on Lephia for centuries before it started to be used to make boats. When a few of these boats were noticed by foreigners it created an instant demand for the treated wood (and more demands for the production process).   With little capacity to meet demand the people of Lephia sold the process to create a lesser form of Herun wood. Though not as effective at resisting decay and corrosion it was step above anything else available.

Everyday use

Herun Wood is typically used to create doors and shutters for buildings. Most other parts of buildings are behind solid rock or layers of Rocktoad hide, but exposed areas need this wood to withstand the storms. This treated wood can withstand several years of storms before it begins to decay, as opposed to the month that untreated wood might last for.
