Government

The law was enforced with a light hand in Irleton. Originally this was because there wasn't much in the way of spare funds for things like patrolling or thief-catching, but later it was because Irleton was a convenient place for soldiers stationed at the border fortress to let loose.

Industry & Trade

Irleton's economy was based on supplying first itself with the materials needed to hold back invaders and later supplying the border fortress. It also relied on the soldiers spending their coin on various entertainments while on leave from the fortress.   A few enterprising souls also made a living selling goods to explorers who wanted to see the savage lands or prospectors looking for opportunities in the mountains.

Infrastructure

Irtelon was created to be the first line of defence against the savage tribes from north of the mountains and was intially little more than a walled keep. A series of goblin raids sent people fleeing to the keep so often that some permanent structures were built outside it's walls, including kiln, tannery, and even a small brewery. Some thought was given to removing these structures or just allowing them to be destroyed in a raid, but the easy access to goods that would otherwise have to be transported from the south convinced Lord Dras that it was worth adding another wall to protect the growing community.   A stream was diverted to bring in additional water and to provide a source of power. The water was also used to carry the waste generated by the increased population. With more people living in Irleton the Church of Seyr funded a new temple within the second ring, causing a bit of friction with the Church of Tarin who had become used to being the only organised religion in the town.   Little work was done to improve the streets and they remained as mud tracks despite the town seeing improvements in it's other facilities. The inevitable taverns proved popular with the soldiers in the town, despite the fact that most were located near the gates so that travellers didn't have to travel through the streets.

History

At times Irleton seemed to serve it's purpose too well. It was raided repeatedly during the first age, and completely destroyed during the Greenskin Invasion. Though rebuilt each time, the defences were never really improved and the buildings insides the walls were quickly rebuilt with wood with little to no plan.   When the Necromancer War started the repeated battles at the town meant that a vast horde of undead could be raised from mass graves and the town was overrun in a matter of hours.   In the second age the town was rebuilt to help support the border fortress again, and initially some effort was put into trying to improve the town's reputation. However, the additional restrictions in the town led to more discipline problems at the fortress so Irleton was allowed to slide back into it's former state of barely controlled chaos.

Following the construction of the border fortress within the mountain pass Irleton became less significant as a defensive structure, though it still had it's uses. The town's defences were kept at a point where it was difficult, but not impossible for an army to take it, which made it a lure for any large warbands that made it passed the border fortress, It was considered inevitable that the town would fall to any large force so it's purpose was to help delay the attackers while reinforcements were arranged.
